To replace a YouTube stream key used by an always-on server, reset the key in YouTube Studio, copy the new key into the server’s encoder configuration, then apply the change using that encoder’s supported reload or restart method. A channel owner or manager must perform the reset. Plan for a possible brief interruption: YouTube does not promise seamless key rotation for third-party encoders.
What the stream key does—and what changes when you reset it
A stream key is the credential your encoder uses to send video to YouTube. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” (YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings). Treat it as a secret: do not expose it in public logs, screenshots, or shared documents.
Reset the key in YouTube’s Live Control Room; do not try to change it by editing the broadcast title or URL. The stream URL and stream key are separate encoder settings, so normally you replace the key while preserving the correct URL. YouTube does not specify a propagation window or grace period for the old key, so do not assume the old credential will keep working after reset.
Replace the key step by step
- Arrange the right channel access. Sign in as a channel owner or manager. YouTube says editors and viewers cannot reset a stream key.
- Open the stream settings. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room, then select Stream in the left menu.
- Reset and copy the key. Find Stream key, select Reset next to the hidden key, and copy the newly generated value. Confirm you are changing the key associated with the stream settings your server uses.
- Update the always-on sender. Open the server’s encoder configuration and replace the stored stream-key value. Leave the stream URL unchanged unless you have independently confirmed it is wrong. YouTube’s encoder setup guide treats the URL and key as separate fields.
- Save and apply the configuration. Use the encoder or server’s documented reload or restart procedure. The exact method depends on the software; YouTube does not provide one universal command for third-party servers or guarantee a no-interruption rotation.
- Verify the feed. Confirm the encoder reconnects and Live Control Room receives video. Check the preview and stream status before assuming the change is complete.
Check connection security and protocol
YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS, which is RTMP over TLS/SSL. When the encoder supports it, use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room rather than guessing or constructing a URL. YouTube’s RTMPS help page recommends checking the URL and encoder support when connection errors occur; for some SSL errors, it identifies port 443 as a point to check. Do not switch protocols blindly: verify the exact URL and the encoder’s supported settings.

If the server will not reconnect
- Authentication or invalid-key error: Check that the complete replacement key—not the old value—was pasted into the encoder’s stream-key field. Avoid copying extra spaces or truncating characters.
- Connection goes to the wrong ingest endpoint: Compare the configured stream URL with the URL displayed in Live Control Room. The URL and key are distinct values; changing the key does not correct a wrong URL.
- RTMPS or SSL error: Confirm the encoder supports RTMPS and is using the exact RTMPS URL YouTube provides. For certain SSL errors, check whether the connection can use port 443, as described by YouTube.
- Configuration looks correct but the sender still uses the old key: Make sure the configuration was saved and applied, then use the encoder’s documented reload or restart mechanism. Each server implementation handles configuration changes differently.
- You cannot see Reset: Check that you are signed in with owner or manager access. Editors and viewers do not have permission to reset the key.
- The feed reconnects but the broadcast is not the one you expected: Check the selected stream settings and the broadcast in Live Control Room. A key reset is not, by itself, a general instruction to create a new broadcast.
Key rotation is different from creating reusable stream resources
YouTube also allows custom stream keys for reuse across streams. That is a separate operational choice: resetting a current key rotates its credential, while creating a deliberately reusable key is for a workflow that needs a shared key. Choose based on how your encoder and broadcasts are managed; do not create a new key or stream resource merely because you have reset a key.
For API-managed setups, Google distinguishes a liveBroadcast (the event/video) from a liveStream (the ingest settings). A stream can be bound to up to three broadcasts, and recurring events may reuse a stream. This API model does not mean every manual key reset requires a new broadcast or stream. Separately, some CDN properties cannot be changed after a stream is created; Google’s API reference says to create a new stream when an immutable property must change. That guidance applies to those properties, not to every key reset (broadcasts and streams overview; LiveStreams update reference).
