Mac mini vs Raspberry Pi 5 for a 24/7 YouTube Playlist Stream

Mac mini and Raspberry Pi 5 specifications do not prove either will reliably run a 24/7 YouTube playlist. Compare workflow, setup, measured power, and recovery before choosing.

Short answer: Neither a Mac mini nor a Raspberry Pi 5 is proven by the available manufacturer specifications to keep a YouTube playlist live unattended around the clock. The Mac mini is the more conventional general-purpose desktop; the Pi 5 is a smaller, hands-on computer that requires boot media and an appropriate power supply. Choose only after confirming that your exact playback and streaming software works on the machine, then test the complete setup under sustained load. If you want to avoid leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative for looping uploaded videos to YouTube.

What matters more than the headline specifications

A 24/7 playlist stream is a whole-system job, not simply a question of whether a computer can decode video. The machine must run compatible software, access the media and playlist reliably, maintain a stable internet connection, and recover sensibly from interruptions. You also need to check YouTube Live eligibility and current platform rules for your channel and content.

The cited manufacturer material describes hardware, not a tested OBS or FFmpeg livestream setup. It does not establish that either computer can run a particular continuous-stream workflow reliably, nor does it verify YouTube’s current requirements for unattended streaming, looping, or archives. Confirm those points for your own software and channel before relying on either device.

Mac mini vs Raspberry Pi 5

Factor Mac mini Raspberry Pi 5
Hardware described by the manufacturer Apple’s current specifications describe Apple-silicon configurations, hardware media engines, HDMI, and Ethernet. Configuration details vary; see Apple’s current specification page. Raspberry Pi Ltd’s April 2026 product brief lists a quad-core 2.4 GHz Arm Cortex-A76 processor, memory options from 1 GB to 16 GB, a 4Kp60 HEVC decoder, Wi-Fi, Gigabit Ethernet, and a microSD card slot.
What those specifications establish They describe a conventional desktop platform and listed hardware features, not performance in your specific livestream application or a proven 24/7 result. They describe the board’s listed hardware, not its capacity to encode or transmit your particular playlist with your intended software.
Network connections Apple lists Ethernet; its current page shows 2.5Gb Ethernet and configurable faster networking for relevant configurations. Raspberry Pi lists Gigabit Ethernet and dual-band Wi-Fi.
Power information Apple lists 155 W maximum continuous power. This is a maximum rating, not measured consumption during a stream. Raspberry Pi recommends a 27 W USB-C supply for Pi 5. That is the recommended supply rating, not a measurement of continuous streaming consumption.
Setup considerations A desktop computer with internal storage and built-in ports; verify which configuration and software suit your stream. Requires an OS image written to boot media and an appropriate power supply; case and cooling needs depend on the build.
Best fit as a decision heuristic Consider it if you want a conventional desktop platform and can justify the acquisition cost after checking the workflow. Consider it if you are comfortable with Linux-style setup and troubleshooting and have verified compatible software for the intended job.

The feature and power figures above come from the manufacturers: Apple’s Mac mini technical specifications, accessed October 3, 2026, and the Raspberry Pi 5 product brief, dated April 2026. They should not be read as like-for-like workload measurements.

What a Raspberry Pi 5 setup entails

Budget for the board plus the parts needed to boot and power it. Raspberry Pi’s current setup documentation recommends a 27 W USB-C power supply for Raspberry Pi 5; the board brief lists a microSD card slot, and the official getting-started guidance says you must write an OS image to boot media before starting the computer. The exact accessories you need depend on your setup and seller.

There is no universal microSD capacity to prescribe from the available information: it depends on whether videos are stored locally, playlist size, logging, and whether encoding happens on the Pi. Decide where media will live and verify your software’s storage and performance needs before buying a card. Raspberry Pi documents the setup process in its Getting started guide.

How to decide for your workflow

  1. Identify the actual stream pipeline. Determine whether your software must encode video in real time or can transmit a pre-encoded loop. Check application support for the exact operating system, hardware, and encoder path; the specifications cited here do not confirm OBS or FFmpeg compatibility for this use.
  2. Check the channel and content requirements. Review current YouTube Help for Live access and rules relevant to your channel, playlist, copyright, reused content, and any archives. These requirements are not established by the hardware sources cited here.
  3. Confirm the full build. Include the computer, power supply, boot or media storage, network connection, and any case or cooling appropriate to the configuration. For the Pi, account specifically for the recommended 27 W USB-C supply and OS boot media.
  4. Test before depending on it. Run the exact playlist, application, network, and encoding settings you intend to use for an extended period. Check for playback interruptions, resource pressure, dropped connections, and whether the setup resumes as expected after a restart or network interruption. A specification sheet cannot substitute for this test.
  5. Measure power at the wall. Compare both complete systems doing the same workload, including attached storage and power-supply efficiency. Apple’s maximum continuous-power rating and the Pi’s recommended supply rating do not reveal typical consumption for your stream.
  6. Compare total cost and effort. Use current regional purchase prices for the configurations and accessories you need, your local electricity rate, measured workload power, setup time, and the effort required to diagnose failures. The available evidence provides no comparable stream-load wattage or total-cost figures.

Power and reliability: what the numbers do not tell you

Do not compare 155 W for the Mac mini with 27 W for the Pi 5 as if they were measured consumption figures for the same task. Apple’s number is a maximum continuous-power rating; Raspberry Pi’s is its recommended USB-C supply rating. Neither tells you what a complete system draws while streaming a playlist. A meaningful cost estimate needs measured whole-system watts under the same workload and the electricity rate where you live.

Likewise, processor, decoder, and network specifications do not prove unattended reliability. A 24/7 design also depends on stable power and internet, storage and playlist behavior, software compatibility, and recovery after interruptions. The cited sources do not provide comparative reliability statistics or establish a guarantee for either computer.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube stream that loops uploaded videos without keeping a home computer on, StreamNeo is an alternative to the Mac mini or Pi approach. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Each slot supports one always-on YouTube stream, playlists, 24/7 looping, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots. The same product applies at every billing length: uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. It does not stream from a camera.

  • Nothing needs to stay on at home.
  • Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed at one price per slot.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
