A YouTube stream key usually does not expire on a fixed schedule. If OBS says the key is invalid, first check whether OBS uses a pasted key or a YouTube account connection, then compare its credential with the active key in YouTube Live Control Room. If OBS instead asks you to sign in or authorize YouTube, that is a different problem from a rejected stream key.
First identify which connection is failing
OBS can connect to YouTube through a copied stream key or through account sign-in. These paths have different troubleshooting steps; a sign-in prompt is not proof that a stream key has expired. YouTube treats encoder key problems separately from issues signing in through third-party software (YouTube live stream troubleshooting).
- Pasted stream key: OBS sends the feed using a key copied from YouTube Studio. A rejected-key error points you toward checking which key is active and which one OBS has saved.
- YouTube account connection: OBS signs in to your YouTube account rather than using a key you pasted. If this connection fails, YouTube advises contacting the software provider because the software may need an update (YouTube live stream troubleshooting).
In OBS, open Settings > Stream and inspect the service and connection method shown there. Do not post or send a stream key to anyone: YouTube describes it as the stream’s password and address, used to direct the feed to YouTube (Manage live stream settings).
Check the active key in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- Select the Stream tab.
- Under Select stream key, identify the key currently selected. If you intend to reuse a key, YouTube says to create a custom stream key there (Manage live stream settings).
- Compare that active key with the one configured in OBS. If YouTube has reset the key, or the key in OBS is rejected, copy the currently active key from Live Control Room and replace the saved key in OBS.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, paste the current key into the stream-key field, select Apply, then OK. Keep the key private and do not include it in screenshots or support posts.
YouTube says only channel owners or managers can reset a stream key (YouTube live stream troubleshooting). If you cannot access the key or reset controls, ask an owner or manager to check it.

Use a reusable custom key for recurring streams
If the problem is that you keep needing to re-enter a credential, select or create a custom key in Live Control Room rather than relying on a different key each time. YouTube documents custom keys for reuse and says returning streamers can have previous encoder settings, including the stream key, loaded again (Manage live stream settings; Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
Reusing a custom key does not mean it can never be reset. If the key is reset, OBS must be updated with the replacement. Avoid resetting it as a routine first step: check the active key and the OBS connection method before changing credentials.

If OBS accepts the key but the stream still will not start
A valid key only addresses the credential. If OBS connects but YouTube does not receive a usable feed, continue with YouTube’s broader encoder checks rather than assuming Windows is expiring the key.
- Update OBS to its latest available version, as YouTube recommends using the latest encoder version (YouTube live stream troubleshooting).
- Check that your network permits outbound streaming connectivity. YouTube recommends checking outbound connectivity when the encoder output looks and sounds healthy but the stream is not working as expected (same source).
- Start a test stream and monitor stream health in Live Control Room. Confirm that the expected preview appears before relying on the setup for a scheduled event (same source).
Changing a camera, microphone, capture card, or cable will not correct a mismatch between the active YouTube key and the credential configured in OBS. Those devices affect production, not which key YouTube accepts.

Does a YouTube stream key expire on Windows?
YouTube’s official guidance describes reusable custom keys and tells creators to replace a key when it has been reset or is rejected. It does not establish a fixed expiration schedule for reusable keys, or document a Windows-specific OBS bug that makes them expire. Without the exact OBS error and connection method, the cause cannot be narrowed further.
