That can help recover from an OBS crash, but it does not guarantee YouTube will resume the same broadcast or make a scheduled event live again. Test the complete recovery path in YouTube Live Control Room before leaving a stream unattended.
What automatic restart can—and cannot—do
There are two separate parts to recovery: restarting the encoder process on the Mac mini, and getting the YouTube broadcast back on air. OBS documents a --startstreaming launch parameter. macOS launchd can manage processes and run scripts. Neither establishes that every OBS restart, network interruption, or scheduled broadcast will automatically restore a public YouTube stream. YouTube’s preview and Live Control Room controls still matter.
This guide uses OBS as the encoder. The documentation reviewed does not provide a complete, current OBS-specific launchd recipe or guarantee coverage for every failure mode, so treat process supervision as a setup to validate—not a promise of uninterrupted streaming.
Prepare the YouTube stream and OBS
1. Set up the encoder stream in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream configuration. Keep the key private: YouTube describes it as the password and address that tell the encoder where to send its feed. Do not expose it in screenshots, shared configuration files, or logs.
- In the stream settings, review the auto-start and auto-stop options. YouTube says that when these settings are enabled, you can start or stop streaming from the encoder. This is distinct from a guarantee that a scheduled broadcast will go live again after OBS restarts.
2. Confirm OBS is ready to resume
Save the intended scene, sources, audio configuration, and stream destination in OBS. On launch, OBS can only stream using the configuration it loads; a missing source, changed scene, or invalid key can leave the encoder running without the intended program reaching YouTube.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS’s system requirements note that actual needs vary with encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. The available guidance does not establish performance for a particular Mac mini generation, so verify the workload on your own machine rather than assuming a model will handle every encoding setup.
3. Use RTMPS when the encoder and endpoint support it
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Confirm the actual server URL shown for your stream and that your OBS configuration supports it; do not substitute an endpoint copied from an unrelated setup. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

Launch OBS with streaming enabled
OBS documents the --startstreaming parameter as automatically starting a stream. Its macOS launch instructions use open -a "OBS" --args followed by launch parameters. For example, from Terminal:
open -a "OBS" --args --startstreaming
This asks OBS to start streaming when it launches, provided its stream configuration is ready. The command launches OBS; it does not itself confirm that YouTube has accepted the feed or that a scheduled event is public. Check the OBS Project’s current Launch Parameters documentation for current syntax.

Use launchd for process supervision
Apple describes launchd as the macOS system used to manage daemons and agents and run shell scripts. A configured job can be set to remain running using KeepAlive, but Apple’s archived guide warns that a process respawning too quickly can be throttled. That makes launchd a process-management option, not a YouTube reconnect guarantee.
A user LaunchAgent is generally scoped to a logged-in user. Do not assume that configuring one creates an identical unattended graphical OBS workflow to a system daemon. Apple’s current overview is Script management with launchd in Terminal on Mac; the detailed Apple Developer guide is archived: Creating Launch Daemons and Agents.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The supplied official guidance supports the general role of launchd, but does not give a complete, current OBS-specific property list or a verified recipe covering all macOS versions. Avoid copying an unverified plist or assuming a restart interval. If you configure a job, verify its executable path, user context, arguments, and logs on the Mac mini, and avoid rapid restart loops.
Test a real failure before relying on recovery
Run a controlled test while you can monitor both OBS and YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing before a stream and monitoring stream health and messages.

- Start the intended YouTube event and confirm the correct OBS scene, audio, destination, and stream key are loaded.
- Confirm the feed appears in YouTube’s preview and inspect stream-health messages.
- Test the specific failure you need to handle, such as closing OBS and allowing your launch configuration to start it again. Do not assume this also tests network-loss recovery.
- Check whether OBS reconnects, whether YouTube receives the feed, and whether the scheduled event requires you to click Go live in Live Control Room.
- Verify picture and sound after recovery, and confirm the event is actually live from a viewer’s perspective.
YouTube’s documented scheduled-stream workflow tells the operator to wait for the preview in Live Control Room and click Go live. Auto-start settings allow encoder-controlled starting and stopping, but that does not establish that every scheduled stream will automatically return to air after an OBS restart. See Manage live stream settings, Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder, and YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for stream-health and testing advice.
Troubleshoot common restart failures
- OBS opens but no feed reaches YouTube: Check that the intended stream configuration and key are loaded, then inspect OBS and Live Control Room status. A successful app launch is not proof of a working stream.
- The feed returns, but the scheduled event is not live: Look for the preview in Live Control Room and follow the event’s on-screen controls. The documented scheduled workflow may require an operator to select Go live.
- OBS repeatedly opens and exits: Check the configured command, executable path, user context, and OBS startup state. Apple warns that rapidly respawning jobs can be throttled; do not treat an increasingly fast restart loop as recovery.
- Audio, video, or the wrong scene appears after restart: Confirm OBS loads the expected scene and sources, and test the complete saved configuration. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages as well as the local preview.
- A network outage is not recovered: Process supervision and connection recovery are different problems. Test an intentional network interruption separately and observe whether OBS reconnects and whether YouTube restores the broadcast; the cited documentation does not guarantee behavior for every outage.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a Mac mini at home to supervise the encoder, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist streaming to YouTube from the cloud: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos and playlists, not a live camera feed. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
