Rehearse the exact setup in a private or unlisted event first: source transitions and playback behavior depend on configuration.
How lesson rotation works
The encoder sends video to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. To change lessons without ending the live event, leave the encoder output running and change the material it sends. YouTube’s guide says to stop sending content from the encoder to end a stream; it does not guarantee glitch-free transitions for every encoder, plugin, or live playlist edit. YouTube does not need to rotate the recordings in Live Control Room for this workflow. Configure playback on the encoder side instead.
Automatically play lessons in order with OBS
- Install VLC, then restart or check OBS to confirm that VLC Video Source is available.
- In the OBS scene that will remain on air, add a VLC Video Source and add the lesson files to its playlist.
- Turn Shuffle off for a predictable order. Choose whether Loop Playlist should be on; enable it only if the lessons should start again after the final item.
- Check the source’s visibility behavior. OBS provides options that stop and restart, pause and resume, or continue playback when a source is hidden. If the source is in a scene that will be hidden and shown, select the behavior that matches whether playback should hold its position or continue.
- Start a private or unlisted test event. Confirm picture and sound, then watch the transition from one lesson file to the next before using the setup for a real stream.

Choose each lesson manually
If an operator should decide which lesson comes next, add each recording as its own Media Source or place each lesson in its own scene. Switch the visible source or scene when ready, while keeping the encoder output connected to YouTube.
Rehearse the switches. OBS notes that a media source may reload when it becomes visible, which can leave a short period without that source on screen. Test the actual scene and source configuration rather than assuming the change will be seamless. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Prepare and monitor the YouTube event
- Set up the encoder before the event and check the Live Control Room preview.
- Monitor both audio and video during the stream. YouTube recommends leaving bandwidth headroom; its streaming tips specify 20% as recommended. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips.
- Keep the stream URL and stream key configured for the event, and avoid stopping encoder output when moving between lessons.
- Check the channel’s live-streaming eligibility before setup. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and meet the minimum age of 16. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
Protect the lesson archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the lesson replay matters, record a local backup rather than relying only on YouTube’s archive. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
When dedicated playback hardware may fit
YouTube’s verified encoder list describes the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone encoder and says its PlayToStream functionality allows prerecorded media to be scheduled and streamed directly to YouTube Live without a computer. This is a specialized hardware alternative, not a requirement for the OBS method. Confirm current availability and feature details with the manufacturer before buying.
