Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHow do I stop OBS from freezing when looping a video overnight? There is no single setting that guarantees OBS will stay stable, but you can narrow down the cause with controlled tests: verify the loop setting, compare hardware decoding on and off, simplify the scene, and inspect a log from the session that failed. If you record, choose MKV or FLV to reduce the risk of losing the recording if OBS is interrupted.
First distinguish what “freezing” means: OBS may become unresponsive, only the preview may stop updating, or the saved recording may show one frozen frame while its duration continues. Those symptoms do not establish the same cause. Use the affected session and its log to investigate rather than assuming a particular setting or component is responsible.
Start by identifying what froze
Before changing settings, note your OBS version and operating system, the video file type, and what happened during the failure. Check whether the whole computer became unresponsive, whether OBS alone stopped responding, whether only the preview froze, whether recording continued, and whether the resulting file plays normally.
- OBS itself is unresponsive: save the affected-session log and any crash information. Graphics-hooking applications, overlays, and other capture or recording tools can cause unusual behavior.
- The preview is stuck: inspect the recording and log before concluding the stream or recording also stopped. A frozen preview alone does not prove the output is frozen.
- The recording continues in duration but shows a frozen frame: treat this as an output, encoding, or source symptom distinct from an unresponsive OBS window. The symptom alone is not enough to identify its cause.
- The recording is missing or corrupt after an interruption: change the recording container for future sessions; that reduces a file-recovery risk but does not prevent OBS from freezing.
Check that the video source is actually set to loop
For one lecture file: Media Source
In the affected scene, open the Media Source properties and verify Loop is enabled. OBS documentation describes Loop as making the file play again after it completes; its documented default is Off. Restart playback when source becomes active is a separate setting, documented as On by default. These options do different jobs: restarting on activation is not a substitute for looping. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation (dated January 11, 2022).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a playlist: VLC Video
If you use a VLC Video source for a playlist, verify Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. For a single local file, Media Source is the simpler option; use VLC Video when playlist handling or format support is needed.
Test hardware decoding both ways
In Media Source properties, compare behavior with hardware decoding enabled and disabled, changing only that setting between runs. OBS documents hardware decoding as Off by default and says it uses the GPU when that GPU has a suitable decoder. Enabling it is not a guaranteed fix: GPU and driver behavior, media codec, and system workload can affect the result. Keep the version and file the same for both tests and record which configuration was used.

Reduce scene and rendering workload
OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render a scene. For a controlled test, duplicate or simplify the affected scene and remove sources and filters that are not needed for the lecture. Browser sources, overlays, and other scene elements can add work; complex sources may demand resources even when they are not visible. Use media no higher in resolution than your actual output requires, if a lower-resolution copy is sufficient.
Compare the original scene with the minimal version while keeping the video, output settings, and other conditions the same. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide (dated June 12, 2021) explains the role of GPU workload and scene complexity. System requirements alone do not guarantee a particular workload will run smoothly; OBS notes that performance depends on what is being encoded and the sources in use.

On Windows, test with HAGS disabled
If you use Windows, test Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS) off. OBS says HAGS may cause performance problems or failures with OBS and hardware encoders and recommends disabling it as a troubleshooting step for performance issues or freezing. This is a Windows-specific test, not an explanation for every freeze.
- In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings.
- Turn off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, if the setting is available.
- Restart Windows, then repeat the same OBS test with the same scene and media.
- If the comparison does not help, restore the previous setting rather than treating HAGS as the confirmed cause.
See OBS Project’s HAGS troubleshooting guidance (dated May 7, 2023). Windows labels and setting availability can vary by version and hardware.

Use a log from the session that failed
A log from a different or uneventful session may not contain evidence of the freeze. Reproduce the issue, then use the affected session’s log:
- In OBS, open Help > Log Files > Upload Current Log File after the test session.
- Open the uploaded log in the OBS Log Analyzer and review its findings.
- When asking for help, include that log and any crash information, along with your OBS version, operating system, media type, and a precise description of whether OBS, the preview, or the recording froze.
The Log Analyzer page has no publication date shown. Treat its findings as a way to inspect that particular session, not as proof that one suspected setting caused every overnight failure.

Protect recordings if OBS is interrupted
If you record the lecture, select MKV or FLV as the recording format in OBS output settings. OBS’s Log Analyzer warns that an interrupted MP4 or MOV recording can be corrupted and unrecoverable. If your editing or delivery workflow needs MP4, remux the completed recording in OBS afterward. This protects against one class of interrupted-file corruption; it does not stop runtime freezes.
Check for overlays and capture conflicts
When OBS itself hangs or behaves unusually, close overlays and other graphics-hooking, capture, or recording applications for a controlled test. OBS identifies graphics-hooking applications as a possible source of crashes or unusual behavior. Change only this variable, then compare the same scene and media. See OBS’s Known Application Conflicts (dated August 25, 2021).
A controlled troubleshooting order
- Write down the OBS version, operating system, file type, and exact failure symptom.
- Verify Media Source > Loop, or VLC Video > Loop Playlist for a playlist.
- Compare Media Source hardware decoding on and off, one run at a time.
- Repeat with a minimal scene and fewer unnecessary filters and sources; use a lower-resolution file only if it is adequate for the output.
- On Windows, test HAGS off and reboot before repeating the same test.
- Close overlays and other capture or recording software if the symptoms point to a conflict.
- Run a short reproduction test, then upload and inspect the current session log. A short test cannot establish overnight stability; do not call the problem fixed until a sufficiently long run succeeds.
- Use MKV or FLV for recordings you want to protect against interruption.
There is no published statistic in the cited OBS materials that establishes how often overnight looping freezes occur, and the materials do not identify one universal cause. An individual diagnosis depends on the system, OBS version, source, media codec, log, and precise symptom.
