You can stream a prepared Tamil devotional playlist continuously to YouTube from a Linux VPS by sending a compatible media file to YouTube Live over RTMPS with FFmpeg. Before you start, confirm the channel can livestream and that you have rights to every recording and visual. The command below loops one prepared video file; it does not make a specific playlist copyright-safe or guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
Check YouTube eligibility and clear the playlist rights
YouTube says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. Check the channel’s livestream access before renting or configuring a VPS. YouTube’s livestream eligibility guidance describes the requirements.
A devotional subject does not make a recording, performance, arrangement, or image free to rebroadcast. Clear the rights for the actual recordings and artwork you plan to use, including any permission needed for the stream’s territories and archive. YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party matches; a match can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Even with a license, interruption can occur if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask the rights holder about allowlisting where applicable. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance explains these risks.
Prepare a file that FFmpeg can loop
For a straightforward setup, render the playlist as one file with both a video track and an audio track. It can use a static devotional visual, but that image must also be cleared for use. Check the finished file’s duration, picture, sound, and transitions before streaming. The command below assumes this file is named devotional-loop.mp4 and contains suitable video and audio.

A single prepared file avoids the extra complications of joining separate tracks or files live. If you instead use multiple files, test the actual sequence: timestamp continuity, codec compatibility, gaps between tracks, and FFmpeg’s concat or playlist behavior can affect transitions and stream stability. An audio-only input or a file without a video track requires a different command and a deliberate video-generation design.
Choose resolution, bitrate, and audio settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. For a basic SDR stream, use progressive scan and square pixels. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its stereo audio guidance is 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

| H.264 video target | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-listed recommendation | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | Lower outbound bandwidth demand and typically lighter encoding load than 1080p30; use it only if it suits the source material. |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | More detail when the source supports it, but needs more sustained upload capacity and encoding resources. |
The bitrate figures are YouTube’s guidance, not a promise that your VPS plan can sustain them. Test real outbound capacity on the VPS and choose a rate the connection can hold consistently. Match the output to the weakest link among the source encode, VPS CPU and network, and YouTube ingest. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into viewer formats.
The example uses H.264 at 5 Mbps, the listed minimum for 1080p30, rather than the recommended 14 Mbps. That is a bandwidth-conscious starting point, not a guarantee of good picture quality. If your source, VPS, and network can support it, test a higher rate; if not, consider a lower resolution such as 720p30 and use the corresponding guidance above.

Create a YouTube live stream and copy its RTMPS details
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream.
- Under Stream settings, reveal the RTMPS URL using the lock icon in the Stream URL field, then copy that URL and the stream key. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance explains the connection: RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL encryption. Google’s ingest documentation specifies port 443 for the connection: YouTube Live ingest protocol.
- Keep the key private. Do not put it in a public tutorial, repository, screenshot, or support ticket. Avoid saving it in shell history; supply it privately when running the command.
Use the primary ingest URL for this basic one-process setup. The LiveStreams API also documents primary and backup ingestion addresses, but a backup workflow is not required for the command here. LiveStreams API reference.
Run FFmpeg on the VPS
Install an FFmpeg build that supports RTMPS, place the prepared file on the VPS, and run this illustrative command from a shell. Replace the final quoted placeholder with the exact RTMPS URL and key shown in Live Control Room. Do not publish the real key.

This is an adaptable example, not a vendor-certified universal command or a tested VPS configuration. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS and that the input has the expected audio and video streams. FFmpeg documents RTMPS as a protocol variant and gives a real-time file-to-RTMP example in its protocol documentation. If the command exits or reports a connection or encoding error, inspect its output before attempting to go live.
Test the preview, monitor health, and supervise the process
- Before a public broadcast, run the command with representative video and audio from the actual playlist. YouTube recommends checking upload speed and testing with representative audio and moving video. Its guidance says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”
- Check the Live Control Room preview before starting the event. Confirm picture, sound, level, and the first playlist transition; then watch the stream health indicators and any review messages while it runs.
- For a technical monitoring workflow, the LiveStreams API exposes status, health, and configuration-issue information. YouTube Studio’s stream-health display is the simpler manual option. See the LiveStreams API reference.
- For unattended operation, a Linux service manager such as systemd can start FFmpeg at boot and restart a failed process. Configure logging and alerts so you know when it restarts. A process restart does not guarantee that the YouTube event remains healthy, resumes at the desired playlist position, or avoids hosting-provider or platform outages; check the preview and health after recovery.
Troubleshoot common failures
FFmpeg cannot connect or YouTube does not receive the stream
- Re-copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and check that the stream key is correct; a wrong endpoint or key prevents a successful ingest.
- Confirm the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS and that the VPS can make outbound connections to the ingest service. RTMPS uses TLS/SSL, and Google’s documentation specifies port 443.
- Keep the key secret while correcting it. If it may have been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before restarting.
The stream buffers, drops, or has poor picture quality
- Measure outbound capacity from the VPS instead of relying on the advertised plan. Compare sustainable upload speed with the selected video bitrate and leave headroom for network variation.
- Check CPU load as well as bandwidth. If encoding strains the VPS, use a lighter output target or a lower resolution and test again.
- Use YouTube’s stream-health messages to distinguish configuration issues from network instability. A lower bitrate may improve continuity, but can reduce image quality.
Video, audio, or transitions are missing or wrong
- Inspect the input file’s streams and verify it contains the tracks the command expects. A file with no video or no audio cannot produce the intended combined output without a different design.
- Check FFmpeg’s output for codec, timestamp, or muxing errors, then inspect the YouTube preview with the actual media. For a multi-file sequence, test codec consistency, timestamps, and gaps across every transition.
- Verify frame rate, keyframe interval, audio sample rate, and channel layout against the settings you selected. Keep the keyframe interval within YouTube’s stated maximum.
The live stream is replaced or interrupted by a copyright match
Pause and resolve the match with the rights holder; changing the encoder does not grant music or artwork rights. Confirm that permissions cover the actual recording and arrangement, and ask whether the channel needs Content ID allowlisting. YouTube notes that a license alone may not prevent interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.
