For a simple playlist that plays continuously on a Mac mini, the base Mac mini with M6 is the proportionate starting point. Apple’s 2026 specifications list a hardware video decode engine, 16 GB of unified memory and a 256 GB SSD in the base configuration. That makes it a plausible choice for playback, not a proven 24/7 setup: no cited source tests uninterrupted playlist use or guarantees uptime or lifespan.
“Playlist stream” can mean either playing videos continuously on a computer or broadcasting a live program to YouTube viewers. Those are different jobs. The Mac mini recommendation below is for local playlist playback; the available specifications do not establish the encoder, YouTube workflow or upload requirements for a continuous live broadcast.
Which Mac mini should you choose?
For straightforward playlist playback: base M6
Apple’s current Mac mini specifications identify M6 and M5 Pro models. The base M6 configuration includes 16 GB unified memory, a 256 GB SSD, a hardware video decode engine, HDMI and Ethernet. The video decode engine makes it a reasonable starting point for playing a playlist, but that is an inference from the specifications, not a hands-on 24/7 test. Apple’s M6 and M5 Pro technical specifications and its Mac mini specifications describe the hardware.
When M5 Pro may make sense
The M5 Pro starts with 24 GB unified memory and a 512 GB SSD, and has Thunderbolt 5; the M6 has Thunderbolt 4. Apple also documents differences in display support and chip/media capabilities. Those differences may matter for other work or particular connectivity needs, but the published material here does not show a practical advantage for simple playlist playback. Compare the configurations against your simultaneous workloads, storage needs, ports and purchase budget; current prices are not established here.

Local playback is not the same as a live broadcast
If you mean a video playlist playing locally on a screen, the Mac mini can serve as the playback computer. If you mean a continuous live program delivered to YouTube viewers, a computer playing files is only one part of the setup: the actual broadcast workflow, encoding, stream settings and internet upload requirements depend on how you plan to send the program to YouTube. The cited Apple specifications do not settle those requirements, so they are not enough to recommend an M6 or M5 Pro as a tested live-broadcast rig.

For any continuous YouTube program, make sure you have the rights to the video and audio you use and follow YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright rules. A playlist’s ability to play does not itself establish permission to broadcast its contents.
Power, heat, noise and network considerations
Do not treat older power figures as an M6 playback estimate
Apple’s power table gives wall-measured figures for specified 2024 systems: 4 W idle and 65 W maximum for an M4 Mac mini with 16 GB memory and a 256 GB SSD; 5 W idle and 140 W maximum for an M4 Pro system with 64 GB memory and an 8 TB SSD. Apple says these measurements include power-supply and system losses, and defines “CPU Max” as a compute-intensive application maximizing processor use. They are not measurements of YouTube or playlist playback, and they are not M6 readings. Actual playback draw and local electricity prices are not established, so these numbers cannot support a reliable annual running-cost estimate. Operating environment and connection
Apple lists an operating-temperature range of 10°–35° C and idle sound pressure of 5 dBA at the operator position for the current Mac mini specifications. These are manufacturer specifications, not an endurance guarantee. The M6 includes Ethernet and Wi-Fi 7; wired Ethernet is a sensible option when the network supports it, but it is not established as a requirement for local playback.
ENERGY STAR’s record for the M4 A3238 configuration lists 2.4 W long idle, 2.8 W short idle, 0.6 W sleep and 0.1 W off. The record applies to its U.S. and Canada certification markets and was certified on 2025-10-16. Those standardized states are not active video playback figures and do not describe an M6 system.
