You can use FFmpeg on a Mac mini to send a looping video, camera feed, or other supported input to YouTube Live—but the Mac mini must stay on, the input and output settings must suit your workload, and you should test recovery before relying on it around the clock. YouTube supplies the stream URL and key; FFmpeg reads the source and either relays compatible media or encodes it for upload.

What you need before you start

  • A Mac mini connected to a stable, wired internet connection if possible. No particular current model or FFmpeg build is established as proven for every 24/7 workload.
  • FFmpeg installed with the input protocols and encoders your source and output require. FFmpeg’s available encoders depend on how the build was configured; its documentation describes VideoToolbox hardware acceleration, but you must verify what your local build supports.
  • A source: for example, a video file, camera, or compatible network stream. Input options and whether to loop, filter, or encode depend on that source.
  • A YouTube channel permitted to stream live, plus a stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
  • Sufficient sustained upload capacity for the output bitrate, with headroom for normal network variation.

FFmpeg’s documentation explains its input, filtering, transcoding, and output capabilities, but does not provide a Mac mini-specific command guaranteed to run unattended for 24 hours. Treat the setup as workload-dependent and validate it on the actual Mac, source, network, and FFmpeg build you plan to use. See the FFmpeg documentation and full FFmpeg documentation.

Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to broadcast.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube describes the key as the credential that lets an encoder send a feed; keep it private and do not paste it into public scripts, screenshots, or logs.
  3. Use the RTMPS endpoint when YouTube provides it and your FFmpeg setup supports it. RTMPS encrypts the connection; YouTube explains the option in its RTMPS guidance.
  4. If the key is exposed, an authorized channel owner or manager can reset it in the live settings. Follow YouTube’s stream settings instructions, then update the encoder configuration with the replacement key.

Keep credentials out of command history and any file others can read. YouTube’s Manage live stream settings page covers stream configuration and key management.

Choose whether to relay or encode

Copy compatible media when no changes are needed

If the source already has video and audio formats suitable for the intended YouTube output and needs no filtering, a stream-copy approach may avoid decoding and re-encoding. Confirm compatibility rather than assuming every file or camera feed can be copied directly.

Encode when the source needs conversion or processing

If you need to change resolution, frame rate, codec, or apply filters, FFmpeg must process the media and typically encode the output. Check the installed build’s encoders before writing the command; the presence and behavior of an encoder depend on that build. VideoToolbox is an available hardware-acceleration option in FFmpeg documentation, not a guarantee that a particular Mac mini and workload will perform reliably.

In either case, the exact input syntax and command depend on whether you are reading a file, camera, or network stream. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes how inputs, options, and outputs fit together. Do not treat a command copied from a different source or machine as a validated 24/7 recipe.

Match the output to YouTube’s encoder guidance

Set the output codec, resolution, frame rate, audio format, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, and protocol deliberately. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio among its encoder guidance. Use RTMPS where supported for an encrypted connection.

Setting YouTube guidance
Bitrate mode Use constant bitrate (CBR).
Keyframe interval Recommended 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
H.264 at 1080p, 30 fps Recommended bitrate range: 5–14 Mbps.
H.264 at 1080p, 60 fps Recommended bitrate range: 6–17 Mbps.
Video and audio formats H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; up to 60 fps.
Transport RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption when supported.

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not measured Mac mini performance results. The bitrate ranges above apply specifically to H.264 at the stated resolution and frame rate; do not apply them unchanged to a different codec or output. YouTube’s full live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance includes recommendations for other output combinations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make sure your sustained upload capacity can carry the selected bitrate with room for network variation. Before using the stream publicly, confirm YouTube’s Live Control Room reports a healthy incoming feed and that audio and motion look right at the intended output settings.

Configure and test the complete chain

  1. Set up the FFmpeg input for the actual source and choose whether to copy compatible media or encode it. Configure looping or filters only if the source and intended presentation call for them.
  2. Set the output to YouTube’s server URL and include the stream key securely. Use RTMPS if it is available and supported.
  3. Apply the relevant YouTube settings: codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR, bitrate, audio format, and a 2-second keyframe interval (not above 4 seconds).
  4. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream and inspect Live Control Room’s stream health. Check image, audio, synchronization, and whether the output stays within the intended settings.
  5. Run the actual source and filters for a meaningful period before depending on the setup. Watch the Mac mini, FFmpeg process, network connection, and YouTube health indicators; verify how the process behaves after an input or connection interruption.
  6. Plan how you will notice and recover from failures. A command that starts successfully is not proof that it will restart after a crash, network outage, or system restart. Test the recovery behavior you intend to rely on.

A November 2021 FFmpeg mailing-list post describes a user’s attempted M1 Mac mini camera-to-YouTube workflow, but it does not establish that the setup worked reliably or that it applies to current Mac mini models. A separate January 2021 post describes a different camera relay and Raspberry Pi hardware, so its CPU observations cannot establish Mac mini performance. See the M1 Mac mini discussion and the camera relay discussion.

Plan for long-stream archives

Do not assume YouTube will preserve a 24/7 broadcast as a replay. YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup if the archive matters. See Archive live streams.

For an uninterrupted channel, consider separately how you will retain footage you need: a long-running live broadcast and a durable archive are different goals. Confirm local storage capacity and recording behavior before the stream begins.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube receives no video Wrong server URL or stream key, unsupported input, or FFmpeg not opening the source. Confirm the selected stream’s URL and key in Live Control Room; check FFmpeg’s input and error output; reset an exposed key and update the configuration.
Connection is unencrypted or fails over RTMPS The endpoint or installed FFmpeg build may not support the chosen secure transport. Use the RTMPS endpoint supplied by YouTube and verify local build support. Consult YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
Stream health reports instability Upload capacity may be insufficient or variable; output bitrate may be too high for the connection. Check sustained upload capacity and network stability, then test a bitrate within YouTube’s recommended range for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
Video stutters or the Mac mini struggles Encoding, filters, source decoding, and output settings together may exceed what the specific setup can sustain. Check FFmpeg logs and local resource use; verify the build’s available encoders; simplify processing or test a lower output workload, then validate again.
Audio is missing or out of sync Input mapping, audio format, or processing choices may not match the source. Inspect the source streams and FFmpeg mapping and confirm YouTube-compatible AAC or MP3 output as appropriate.
Stream stops after an interruption The process or source may not reconnect automatically, or the Mac/network may have stopped. Test recovery deliberately; check process status, source availability, network, and YouTube health. Do not assume a restart mechanism works until you have observed it.
No YouTube replay appears The broadcast may have exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. Keep a local recording when preservation matters and consult YouTube’s archive guidance.

Copyright, live eligibility, and the content itself

Before streaming, confirm you have the rights to every video, music track, and other material in the feed. Using FFmpeg does not change YouTube’s copyright rules or guarantee live-stream eligibility. Check the channel’s current live settings and YouTube policies for restrictions applicable to your account and content. If you are looping prerecorded material, consider whether the stream offers viewers an appropriate, clearly presented experience; technical continuity alone does not establish that content complies with YouTube policy.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live from uploaded recordings without keeping the Mac mini or another home computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home.
  • Uploaded quality streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
