Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To stream from a Hetzner VPS to YouTube Live, give the server a working internet route, install an FFmpeg build suitable for your input, create a YouTube live event, and send the event’s RTMPS endpoint and stream key from FFmpeg. Choose the VPS and encoder settings for the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, and workload; there is no universally sufficient server size. Test with representative audio and motion, then check YouTube Studio’s stream health before relying on the setup.
What you need before you start
- A Hetzner Cloud server with a public Primary IP or another working route to the internet. Hetzner describes Cloud servers as virtual machines and offers shared and dedicated resource classes; neither class alone guarantees adequate encoding performance. Hetzner Cloud server overview
- An operating system and FFmpeg build compatible with your media input and chosen codecs. Installation commands vary by distribution and repository, so confirm the current package and build options for the OS you selected.
- A YouTube channel able to create a live event, plus its server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.
- A media input that FFmpeg can read, and sufficient CPU capacity to encode it in real time if you are encoding rather than simply relaying an already suitable stream.
Encoding demand depends on the input, codec, output resolution and frame rate, and encoder settings. A VPS that can relay one source may not have enough CPU to re-encode it at a higher resolution or frame rate. Test the intended workload on the selected machine rather than choosing a server based on a generic plan recommendation.
Prepare the Hetzner VPS network
Confirm public connectivity
The stream travels outbound from the VPS to YouTube. Hetzner’s overview identifies a public Primary IP as the way to establish internet connectivity for a public-network server. If the server has no public route, arrange suitable routing before attempting the stream. Hetzner Cloud server overview
Check provider and operating-system firewalls
Review the Hetzner Cloud firewall separately from any firewall inside the guest operating system. Hetzner’s Cloud API documentation says inbound traffic is dropped when a firewall has no inbound rule, while outbound traffic is accepted when no outbound rule is specified. Retain only the inbound administration access you need, and ensure the VPS can make outbound connections to YouTube’s supplied ingest endpoint. Hetzner Cloud API firewall documentation

Create a YouTube Live destination and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or select the live stream/event you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that destination.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not post it in public scripts, repositories, screenshots, or logs. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the FFmpeg configuration. YouTube Help: create a live stream
The endpoint and key are separate pieces of destination information. Use the URL YouTube provides rather than guessing or reconstructing an address. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over SSL; its documented RTMPS endpoint uses the rtmps scheme and port 443. YouTube Help: connect your encoder
Choose FFmpeg settings for YouTube Live
Match the output to the source and to the server’s measured capacity. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio. H.264 video with AAC audio is a conservative interoperability choice, not the only supported combination. Use the official settings page for the full requirements and for resolutions or frame rates not shown below. YouTube Help: live encoder settings

Published H.264 bitrate recommendations
The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates, as stated on its encoder settings page accessed in 2026. They are not guarantees of adequate VPS CPU performance or network capacity.
| Output | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
Keyframes, frame rate, and bitrate behavior
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps. Keep the output aligned with the source unless you have a reason and sufficient capacity to change it.
- Bitrate: Use constant-bitrate encoding where appropriate to follow YouTube’s guidance. Leave network headroom above the selected video bitrate for variation, audio, and transport overhead; check actual outbound capacity under load.
- Resolution: Choose a target supported by the source, YouTube’s settings guidance, and the VPS workload. Do not infer a bitrate recommendation for an unlisted resolution by extrapolating from the table.
Configure and start FFmpeg
The exact command depends on whether the source is a file, capture device, or an already encoded network stream; on the codecs in that input; and on the FFmpeg build and operating system. The available guidance does not establish a tested, input-specific command or a single safe installation command for every Hetzner image. Build the output configuration around the exact endpoint and key YouTube gives you, then use FFmpeg options appropriate to your input and encoder. Do not paste a real key into an example, public script, or shared terminal transcript.

YouTube’s guidance recommends RTMPS for streaming to Live. YouTube Help: live encoder settings YouTube Help: stream URL and key
Before leaving a stream unattended, decide how the process should be supervised and restarted after an error or host reboot. A process can stop; persistence and recovery depend on how you configure the operating system and FFmpeg. Test any service manager, restart policy, reconnect behavior, and secret-file permissions with your specific OS and FFmpeg version rather than assuming one configuration applies everywhere.

Test the stream before an event
- Start the stream early enough to diagnose problems before the intended broadcast.
- Use a test input with audio and movement similar to the real program. A still image and silence may not expose audio, motion, or encoding issues.
- In YouTube Studio, confirm that the event receives the stream and inspect its stream health.
- Check the audio and video playback, the chosen resolution and frame rate, and whether the stream remains stable.
- Compare actual outbound use with the selected bitrate and confirm the VPS remains capable of encoding the workload in real time.
YouTube recommends testing with content similar to the planned stream and checking stream health and outbound capacity. YouTube Help: test your live stream
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube receives no signal: Check that FFmpeg is running, that it is using the correct event’s server URL and key, and that outbound networking permits the connection. Re-copy the endpoint from Studio rather than relying on an old or guessed URL.
- The key no longer works: Verify that the key belongs to the selected event and has not been reset. If it was exposed, reset it in Studio and replace the stored value.
- Connection or stream health is unstable: Check outbound capacity, firewall rules, and whether the VPS is under CPU pressure. Compare the real workload against the chosen bitrate and leave headroom for audio and transport overhead.
- Video is choppy or falls behind: Confirm that FFmpeg can encode the selected resolution and frame rate in real time on this VPS. Reduce the workload or choose a more capable resource class, then repeat a representative test.
- Audio or motion problems appear only in the real program: Test with representative content, not just a static frame or silent source; inspect input handling and output codec settings.
- The stream stops after an error or reboot: Check process supervision and restart behavior. A VPS does not by itself guarantee that an FFmpeg process restarts; validate the chosen service configuration and recovery behavior.
Costs and resource choices
Hetzner distinguishes shared and dedicated CPU resource classes, but a class or plan name alone does not establish that a particular machine can encode every stream. Choose based on the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, and whether FFmpeg is encoding or relaying; test under the intended load. The source material does not establish a current suitable server SKU or price, so check Hetzner’s live catalog for the server and region you plan to use.
Budget for more than the VPS itself: consider the time required to configure and monitor FFmpeg, the source media or input, and the consequences of a stopped process. This DIY approach gives you control over the server and pipeline, while making you responsible for operating-system updates, process supervision, secret handling, and recovery.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than operate FFmpeg on a VPS, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
