Short answer: A Mac mini M4 gives you a local, familiar place to run OBS; a VPS moves the encoder to a remote server. Neither is automatically the more reliable or cheaper choice. The right fit depends on whether your stream needs local production hardware, whether the host can sustain your chosen encoding workload, and how you will handle internet, power, host, and encoder failures. For a prerecorded YouTube feed, a cloud looping service is another option that avoids keeping a computer running at home.
What you are comparing
A 24/7 YouTube livestream is only as dependable as its full chain: the video source, encoder, connection to YouTube, and recovery plan. With OBS on a Mac mini, the computer and internet connection are at your location. With a VPS, the software runs on a provider’s remote machine and sends the stream from there. A VPS is not a turnkey guarantee: the plan must support your encoding workload and provide enough outbound bandwidth, and you must be able to administer and recover the server.
The workflow matters. A stream that needs a locally connected camera, capture device, or hands-on production may favor a computer at the production location. A prerecorded, software-generated feed may be easier to host remotely, provided the VPS is capable of running it. That is a practical distinction, not proof that any particular VPS can encode a given stream.
Mac mini M4 vs VPS at a glance
| Decision factor | Mac mini M4 running OBS | VPS running streaming software |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | At your location, on hardware you own. | On a provider’s remote server; capabilities and limits depend on the specific plan. |
| Costs to investigate | Initial hardware outlay, electricity, and local internet. Apple’s published power figures are not a measurement of OBS use. | Recurring hosting fees and any plan limits or extra charges. No provider-specific VPS price was established for this comparison. |
| Production workflow | Convenient when the stream depends on equipment or sources connected locally. | Remote administration is required; verify the operating system and software support you need. |
| Reliability risks | Local power, internet, Mac, and OBS failures can interrupt the stream. | Server, provider network, plan capacity, bandwidth limits, and configuration can interrupt the stream. |
| Recovery | Plan how to restart OBS or the Mac and restore the stream after a fault. | Confirm how you can remotely access, restart, and recover the server and encoder. |
When a Mac mini M4 makes sense
You need a local production setup
If your OBS scene uses a camera, capture device, audio interface, or other hardware at your location, a local Mac can be the more straightforward place to assemble the production. It also offers a graphical desktop workflow. You still need to test the actual scene and encoder rather than infer that it will run continuously from the computer’s specifications.

Compatibility is not a performance guarantee
OBS lists Apple Silicon support on macOS 11 or later, but compatibility alone does not establish that a particular stream will run smoothly. The OBS Project says, “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all affect workload. See the OBS system requirements.
Apple lists its 2024 Mac mini M4 configuration with 16 GB unified memory and a 256 GB SSD at 4 W idle and 65 W maximum power consumption, with thermal output of 14 BTU/h idle and 222 BTU/h maximum. These are Apple’s published figures for that configuration, not measurements of OBS encoding or a 24/7 stream; maximum consumption is not the expected draw for your particular workload. See Apple’s Mac mini specifications and Apple’s power-consumption and thermal-output information.

Account for the local failure points
- Check that your internet connection can sustain the stream’s upload rate, including headroom for other network activity.
- Consider what happens during a home power or internet outage and whether you can restore the stream remotely.
- Test the Mac, OBS scene, audio, and selected encoder for an extended period under representative conditions. Do not treat a short successful preview as proof of around-the-clock reliability.
When a VPS makes sense
Remote hosting can remove dependence on your home connection
A VPS can be useful when the stream is generated entirely in software and you prefer it to run away from your home setup. But “VPS” describes a hosting arrangement, not a guaranteed level of encoding performance. Before paying, get plan-specific answers on sustained encoding capability, outbound bandwidth and transfer limits, supported software and operating system, remote access, and recovery arrangements.
Compare the real operating costs
Compare the VPS’s recurring fee and applicable usage limits with a Mac’s purchase cost, electricity, and local internet needs. The available information does not establish a provider-specific VPS price, encoding benchmark, bandwidth allowance, regional reliability, or support commitment, so it cannot show that a VPS is cheaper, faster, or more reliable than a Mac mini M4. Get those figures for the plan you intend to use.

Set YouTube’s ingest correctly on either host
Choose the workload before choosing the host
Set the target resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate first. Then confirm that the selected Mac or VPS can sustain that encoding workload and that its upload connection has sufficient capacity. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates include 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; other combinations of resolution, frame rate, and codec have different requirements. YouTube recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Its encoder guidance recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Check the current YouTube encoder settings for the settings that match your output.
Allow upload headroom and test the complete path
YouTube recommends that available upload capacity exceed stream bitrate by 20%. A connection that only just matches the target bitrate leaves little room for variation. Test with representative video motion and audio, inspect the YouTube preview, and monitor stream health. YouTube warns that connection disruption can break a stream; if your setup uses backup-encoder failover, test that procedure rather than assuming it will work. See YouTube’s guidance on live-streaming errors and connection stability.

YouTube transcodes a live ingest into viewer output formats, but that does not fix an unstable or incorrectly configured encoder feed. YouTube describes encoder-based streaming as suitable for screen sharing, gameplay, external audio/video equipment, and more advanced production. Its help also discusses a cloud-based tool for continuous prerecorded-video streams; that adjacent option does not mean every 24/7 stream should use one. See YouTube’s guidance on continuous live streams.
Make the choice with a workload and recovery checklist
- Choose a local Mac workflow when: your stream depends on production equipment at home or you prefer to operate OBS on a local graphical desktop, and you can address local power, internet, and restart risks.
- Consider a VPS when: the feed can be generated remotely and the exact plan meets your sustained encoding, bandwidth, software, access, and recovery requirements.
- For either option: test the real scene and stream settings, monitor YouTube’s preview and health indicators, and decide how you will restore service after an encoder, network, or host failure.
There is no universal winner: decide from your production workflow and verified plan or hardware capabilities, not from the labels “Mac mini” or “VPS” alone.
