You can make a YouTube encoder restart automatically after a VPS reboots by running it as a systemd service enabled at boot, then configuring the encoder to retry its connection. That can restore the feed after the server returns, but it cannot prevent an interruption while the VPS is down or guarantee that YouTube resumes the same live event. Test the full recovery path and verify YouTube is receiving the stream.
What a VPS reboot does to a 24/7 stream
A reboot stops the encoder process and interrupts its outbound feed. Boot-starting the process lets it return without an SSH session or manual launch, but several things must still work: the media source must be available, networking must come up, the YouTube ingest endpoint must accept a connection, and the stream key must be valid.
So the practical goal is automatic startup plus reconnection—not uninterrupted viewing. A service shown as active only proves that the local process is running; it does not prove YouTube is receiving usable audio and video or that viewers can access the event.
Set up automatic startup with systemd
The exact unit file and startup ordering depend on your Linux distribution, systemd version, encoder, and media source. Use the encoder’s own documentation for its command and retry options; there is no universal retry delay or encoder-specific command established here. The systemd steps below explain the boot behavior you need to configure.

1. Prepare the encoder configuration
Configure the encoder with the media source, YouTube Live server URL, and stream key. YouTube’s encoder guide explains entering the server URL and key in the encoder settings: YouTube Live encoder setup. Store credentials in a configuration mechanism with appropriately restricted access rather than exposing the key in a shared command history or world-readable file.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential. Custom keys can be reused, and YouTube provides a reset flow if one is compromised: YouTube stream settings.
2. Run the encoder as a system service
Create a system-level service unit for the encoder using the command, user, working directory, and configuration required by your setup. Configure the service to start at boot and to relaunch after a process failure as appropriate for the encoder. Consult the systemd documentation and your distribution’s guidance for valid unit settings: systemctl.

Enabling and starting are separate operations: enabling arranges for a unit to be activated during boot; starting launches it now. Use the unit name you created in place of your-encoder.service:
sudo systemctl enable your-encoder.service— arrange for startup at boot.sudo systemctl start your-encoder.service— launch it now, without waiting for a reboot.systemctl is-enabled your-encoder.service— check that it is enabled.systemctl status your-encoder.service— inspect whether it is currently running and whether systemd reports errors.
A successful enable or start command is not an end-to-end stream test. Confirm the service’s actual behavior on the target VPS and distribution.
3. Make reconnection resilient to boot timing
The encoder may start before networking or YouTube ingest connectivity is ready. Configure its documented retry or reconnect behavior so it attempts the connection again after a transient failure. The relevant setting varies by encoder; do not copy a retry flag from another encoder unless its documentation confirms it applies.

A systemd restart policy can relaunch a process that exits, but it is not a substitute for the encoder’s connection retry behavior if the encoder remains running while its network connection is unavailable. Test both cases: the process exiting and the connection dropping while the process stays alive.
Choose stable YouTube ingest settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Select a bitrate appropriate to the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate, and check that the VPS uplink can sustain it. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
These settings support a stable feed; they do not make a reboot interruption-free. YouTube also advises testing the encoder, checking the preview before starting, monitoring audio and video quality, and verifying viewer access. Its failover test is to stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet and check whether the player rolls over to a backup encoder: YouTube live streaming tips. A single encoder restarting on one VPS is not, by itself, a tested backup arrangement.

Test recovery before relying on it
- Start the service and check its status and logs. For example,
journalctl -u your-encoder.serviceshows the service’s journal entries; use your unit name. - Open YouTube Live Control Room and check for an incoming preview and healthy stream status. Follow the event’s normal workflow; for scheduled streams, YouTube describes waiting for the preview and then selecting Go live.
- Check the viewer-facing watch page from a separate device or session. Confirm both picture and sound rather than inferring success from the encoder process.
- Reboot the VPS during a controlled test. After it returns, check the service status and logs, then verify the preview, stream health, and watch page again.
- If your setup includes a backup encoder, test failover separately. YouTube’s suggested test is to stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet and see whether the player switches to the backup.
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings are not proof that every interrupted encoder connection will resume the same event in every configuration. Test the settings and event workflow you actually use: YouTube stream settings.
Common recovery failures and what to check
- The service does not start after reboot: Check
systemctl is-enabled,systemctl status, and the service journal. Verify the unit name, boot target, executable path, permissions, and configuration paths for your distribution. - The service is active, but YouTube shows no incoming feed: Check encoder logs for connection errors, confirm the server URL and stream key, and make sure the media source is accessible to the service’s user. An active local process is not evidence of successful ingestion.
- The encoder starts too early and fails to connect: Check its documented retry controls and verify that it retries after networking or ingest connectivity becomes available. Do not assume a fixed delay works for every VPS.
- YouTube reports an encoder or key error: YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to copy the stream key from Live Control Room and paste it into the encoder. For login-based integrations that do not use a stream key, YouTube advises contacting the software vendor: YouTube encoder troubleshooting.
- The feed returns, but viewers cannot see the event: Check the Live Control Room event state and watch page. Confirm the preview and follow the event’s required Go live workflow; process recovery alone does not establish that the event is available to viewers.
Plan separately for archiving a continuous stream
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that is not a guarantee that a continuous stream exceeding 12 hours will be archived as one video. If you need a record of a 24/7 broadcast, plan and verify your own archival approach rather than relying on one continuous YouTube archive: YouTube Live encoder guide.
When a managed cloud stream may fit better
A self-hosted encoder on the VPS gives you control and can relaunch through a boot-enabled service, but rebooting that VPS still interrupts its feed, and recovery depends on the server, network, encoder, and YouTube accepting reconnection. A managed cloud encoder can separate playback from maintenance of your own VPS, but assess the provider’s recovery behavior, monitoring, source controls, terms, and cost; those vary by provider. Do not assume any service guarantees uninterrupted viewing without a tested failover arrangement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOr let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. The same plan supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free first day.
