First identify which connection is failing: FFmpeg may be reconnecting while reading its input, or its output connection to YouTube may be dropping. The fix depends on which side is failing. FFmpeg’s documented reconnect* options discussed below apply to HTTP inputs; they are not a general fix for an RTMP or RTMPS publishing failure.
1. Find out which connection is reconnecting
FFmpeg can read from one endpoint and publish to another. A repeated reconnect message alone does not tell you which one is at fault. Inspect the full log around a disconnect and identify whether the error occurs while reading the source or writing to the YouTube destination. Note the protocol used by each URL: for example, an HTTP input is a different case from an RTMP or RTMPS output.
Compare the timing with messages in YouTube Live Control Room. Its stream-health information can help establish whether YouTube is seeing a problem with the incoming stream. The relevant checks differ by leg:
| Failing leg | What to inspect | What the reconnect options here address |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg input | Source URL and protocol, read errors, and whether the source ended | FFmpeg’s documented reconnect options apply to HTTP protocol connections. |
| YouTube output | Destination URL and protocol, stream key, write errors, network upload, and Live Control Room stream health | The HTTP input options do not establish or repair RTMP/RTMPS output retry behavior. |
Capture enough evidence to diagnose it
- Record the FFmpeg version and build, exact command, source and destination protocols, and several log lines before and after a reconnect.
- Redact the stream key and any other credentials before sharing the command or logs.
- Identify whether FFmpeg reports an input read failure or an output write failure.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health messages at the same time as the disconnect.
Without the command, relevant logs, and stream-health message, there is no reliable way to name one root cause or one universal switch.

2. If FFmpeg is reconnecting to an HTTP input
Use an HTTP reconnect option only if the failing input actually uses HTTP. The options have different triggers and behaviors; choose one based on the observed failure and whether the source is expected to end. They cannot make an unavailable source, invalid URL, authentication failure, or unstable network work.
| Option | Documented purpose | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
reconnect |
Reconnect automatically when disconnected before EOF. | The HTTP input connection drops before the source reaches its end. |
reconnect_at_eof |
Treat EOF as an error and reconnect; intended for live or endless streams. | The HTTP source should continue rather than finish normally. |
reconnect_on_network_error |
Reconnect on TCP/TLS errors during connection establishment. | The failure occurs while establishing the network connection. |
reconnect_on_http_error |
Retry selected HTTP status codes, including categories such as 4xx or 5xx. |
The log shows an HTTP response status that you have deliberately selected for retries. |
reconnect_streamed |
Allow reconnects for streamed or non-seekable inputs. | The HTTP input is streamed or non-seekable. |
reconnect_delay_max, reconnect_max_retries, reconnect_delay_total_max |
Bound reconnect delay or attempts. | You need retry behavior limited to a defined delay or retry budget. |
Check the options supported by your FFmpeg build
Run ffmpeg -h protocol=http on the machine running the stream. Confirm the options and defaults for that installed build rather than assuming another version behaves identically. The FFmpeg 8.1 HTTP source documentation shows a maximum reconnect delay default of 120 seconds and an unlimited retry default represented by -1; those are version-specific reference values, not a guarantee for every installation.

Retries can keep trying, but they do not repair a bad URL, rejected credentials, an unavailable source, or a failing network. If the log points to one of those causes, correct it instead of increasing the retry budget.
3. If FFmpeg is losing its YouTube output connection
Do not apply HTTP input switches as a supposed fix for an RTMP/RTMPS publishing failure. Check the encoder destination and the YouTube-side stream information first.

Verify the destination URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the current stream URL and stream key for the stream you intend to send.
- Check that both values are entered correctly in the FFmpeg output configuration. Keep the key private and redact it from logs or examples.
- If the log reports a timeout or SSL error, verify that the destination uses the actual RTMPS endpoint shown in Live Control Room. Do not substitute a host copied from a generic example.
- For YouTube’s documented invalid-certificate SSL error, check the server URL and protocol; YouTube also suggests trying port 443 where appropriate.
YouTube Help recommends RTMPS, describing it as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” The correct endpoint is the one provided for your stream in Live Control Room, not an example endpoint.
Check upload reliability and encoder settings
- Run an upload-speed test and assess whether the connection can sustain the selected stream quality.
- Test with representative audio and motion before an important stream, then monitor stream health and messages while live.
- Compare the encoder configuration with YouTube’s current guidance: constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval, and an interval not exceeding four seconds.
- Confirm that the protocol and codec combination is supported for the stream you are configuring.
These encoder settings can reveal a configuration mismatch, but YouTube’s guidance does not say that changing them cures a transport disconnection. Use the log and stream-health messages to determine whether the issue is transport, configuration, upload reliability, or another failure.

4. Avoid an endless retry loop that hides the fault
Repeated retries may conceal a persistent problem while leaving the stream broken. Where the protocol and workflow support it, set a bounded retry policy. Then address the underlying issue indicated by the evidence: source availability, URL or key, network conditions, or a YouTube-side message. Keep input recovery and output troubleshooting separate; the HTTP reconnect documentation applies to HTTP connections, not every protocol FFmpeg can use.
5. Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you see | Likely area to investigate | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports a read or input error | Source connection | Identify the source protocol. If it is HTTP, match the documented reconnect option to the actual error and expected end-of-input behavior. |
| FFmpeg reports a write or output error | YouTube publishing connection | Check the current Live Control Room URL and key, output protocol, network conditions, and corresponding stream-health messages. |
| Timeout or SSL error on the YouTube output | Destination endpoint, protocol, or connection | Verify the RTMPS endpoint from Live Control Room. For the documented invalid-certificate error, check URL and protocol and consider port 443 where appropriate. |
| Reconnects continue despite retries | Persistent source, configuration, network, or service-side fault | Stop treating more retries as the fix. Use the error context and YouTube stream health to isolate and correct the underlying problem. |
| No clear error or health message | Insufficient diagnostic evidence | Capture the FFmpeg version, redacted command, full log excerpt, source and output protocols, network/upload conditions, and Live Control Room message. |
