To estimate nonstop YouTube viewing, multiply the expected data use per hour by 24 for a day, or by 720 for a 30-day month. For example, a sustained 1 Mbps stream transfers about 10.8 decimal GB in 24 hours. The result is an estimate, not a fixed YouTube rate: resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, and playback behavior all affect actual use.

Estimate the data for a full day or month

Use either a published per-hour estimate or the stream’s average bitrate. Keep the units consistent: the bitrate example below uses decimal MB and GB, where 1 GB is 1,000 MB. Carrier displays and device counters may use different rounding or unit conventions.

Method 1: Start with data per hour

  1. Choose a per-hour estimate that matches the likely playback quality as closely as possible.
  2. Multiply that figure by 24 for one full day, or by 720 for 30 days of continuous viewing.
  3. For a billing period that is not 30 days, multiply the hourly figure by the actual number of viewing hours.

For example, at an estimated 500 MB per hour, continuous viewing would use about 12 GB in a day and 360 GB over 30 days.

Method 2: Calculate from bitrate

For a sustained average bitrate in Mbps, calculate: Mbps Ă— 3,600 seconds Ă· 8 = MB per hour. Multiply the hourly result by the viewing hours. At 1 Mbps, that is about 450 MB per hour, or 10,800 MB (10.8 decimal GB) in 24 hours.

Estimated YouTube data use by quality

These figures are planning estimates, not official fixed YouTube rates. WhistleOut’s accessed page does not state a publication year; the figures below were accessed on 2026-10-03. Daily totals assume 24 uninterrupted hours, and monthly totals assume 720 hours (30 days). WhistleOut’s YouTube data estimates are:

Quality Estimated use per hour Estimated use per day Estimated use per 30 days
144p 80 MB 1.92 GB 57.6 GB
240p 200 MB 4.8 GB 144 GB
360p 300 MB 7.2 GB 216 GB
480p 500 MB 12 GB 360 GB
720p 1.5 GB 36 GB 1,080 GB
1080p 3 GB 72 GB 2,160 GB

Other published estimates differ. Astound estimates 225 MB per hour at 240p, 315 MB at 360p, and 562.5 MB at 480p. For HD, it estimates 1.24 GB per hour at 720p/30fps and 1.86 GB at 720p/60fps; at 1080p, it estimates 2.05 GB at 30fps and 3.04 GB at 60fps. Its 4K estimate spans 10.58–15.98 GB per hour depending on frame rate. The differences show why a resolution label alone cannot predict usage. Astound’s page does not state a publication date in the accessed material. See Astound’s estimates and measurement guidance.

A World Bank connectivity guide gives broader planning ranges: 560–800 MB per hour for SD (480p), 2–3 GB for HD (720p–1080p), and 7–16 GB for UHD (4K). The guide notes codec dependence; these are connectivity-planning ranges, not a measurement of a particular YouTube stream in India. The document’s publication year was not confirmed in the accessed excerpt. Read the World Bank connectivity guide.

Why actual usage can be different

  • Quality selected and delivered: YouTube may offer multiple quality levels, and automatic playback can adjust quality to conditions. Higher quality generally consumes more data.
  • Frame rate and bitrate: Streams at the same resolution can use different amounts. Astound’s estimates, for example, are higher at 60fps than at 30fps for its HD examples.
  • Buffering and playback: The player can transfer data ahead of what has been watched, and autoplay can continue beyond the intended session.
  • Codec, content, connection, and device: These can change the amount transferred; the World Bank guide explicitly notes codec dependence.
  • Measurement window: A phone’s total mobile-data counter may include other apps or cover a different billing period than the viewing session.

Measure your own phone’s YouTube use

  1. Record the YouTube app’s data usage in your device’s mobile-data settings before a representative viewing period.
  2. Watch for a known duration under the conditions you want to estimate, including the usual quality setting.
  3. Check the app-level usage counter again and calculate the difference. Divide by the viewing hours for an observed per-hour estimate, then multiply by 24 or by the hours in your billing period.

Astound describes per-app usage screens on iOS and Android, but menu labels vary by operating-system version. Use the YouTube app’s counter rather than the phone’s overall data total where available, and match the measurement interval to the session.

Historical India-specific example

A Reliance Jio submission hosted by TRAI includes approximate observations for selected five-minute YouTube videos: about 8 MB at 240p and about 20 MB at 480p. The document is from the 2015 period according to search indexing; these are historical examples in a regulatory submission, not current per-hour rates or current Jio plan terms. They should not be generalized into a complete quality table. View the Reliance Jio submission hosted by TRAI.

Plan for data and billing limits

Use a range if you are unsure of quality or frame rate, and leave headroom for variation, buffering, and other device traffic. For continuous viewing, compare the resulting estimate with the data allowance, fair-use or throttling terms, coverage at the viewing location, and billing-cycle length of your actual connection. Verify current India-specific terms with the provider before relying on an allowance. No single YouTube-published fixed MB-per-hour rate is established by the sources cited here.
