If your Raspberry Pi runs hot during a 24/7 YouTube stream, first identify the exact board and measure its temperature and throttling while the real stream is running. A warm reading alone does not prove a cooling fault, and cooling thresholds or accessory fit for a Pi 5 should not be assumed for another model. Start with airflow and placement; add model-compatible cooling only if the stream workload shows it is needed.

Why diagnosis comes before buying a fan

A temperature reading is only useful in context: board model, enclosure, attachments, stream software, encoding method, ambient conditions, and whether the processor is throttling all matter. The available evidence does not test a 24/7 YouTube stream in India, so no single temperature can be presented as the expected result for your installation.

Raspberry Pi says that boards begin throttling at 80°C and throttle further at 85°C in its Pi 5 cooling article. Those are manufacturer-stated thermal behavior thresholds, not recommended operating targets; that article’s context is Pi 5 cooling. Raspberry Pi: Heating and cooling Raspberry Pi 5 (2023-10-04).

Raspberry Pi also notes that most of its devices rely on internal dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) and thermal throttling rather than extra cooling. Persistent workload and high ambient temperature can make added cooling useful, but not every continuous stream needs a fan. Raspberry Pi computer documentation.

How to check the actual streaming workload

Record the build before changing it

Write down the board model and revision, case, HATs and other attachments, power supply, stream software, capture method, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and encoding method. Whether the workload is CPU-intensive or mostly offloaded depends on those details; it should not be guessed from the fact that a stream is running.

Measure under representative conditions

  1. Run the usual stream for long enough to observe sustained behavior, not just startup. Include the hottest operating period you expect at the installation site.
  2. Record processor temperature and whether throttling occurs, along with any visible loss of stream performance. Use a monitoring method suitable for the exact board and software; the evidence here does not establish one universal command or monitoring interface for every Pi model.
  3. Record ambient temperature near the Pi and note whether the case, furniture, or nearby equipment restricts airflow. In India, measure conditions at the actual deployment location rather than relying on a generic climate assumption.
  4. Check power and network symptoms separately. A fan cannot correct an electrical supply or connection fault, and the available evidence does not establish an undervoltage problem in your setup.

Keep the observation tied to the same stream configuration and comparable ambient conditions when you later compare cooling changes.

Does a Raspberry Pi need a fan for 24/7 streaming?

Not necessarily. The answer depends on the exact board and sustained behavior in its installed environment. Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 tests are useful context, but they are not YouTube-stream benchmarks: in a controlled synthetic stress test, an uncoolled Pi 5 processor rose above the 85°C thermal limit; with the Active Cooler it stabilized around 64°C. The reported sustained-load maxima for the Pi 5 fan case were about 72°C with its lid removed and 74°C with it fitted. Raspberry Pi also reported approximately 65°C idle in open air without cooling. These are the manufacturer’s observations under its test conditions, not forecasts for a stream or an Indian room. Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 test and cooling discussion.

For Pi 5, Raspberry Pi documents temperature-controlled fan behavior: off below 50°C; low speed (30%) at 50°C; medium (50%) at 60°C; high (70%) at 67.5°C; and full speed (100%) at 75°C, with 5°C hysteresis. The fan thresholds can be adjusted through device-tree overlay settings. These documented control points describe Pi 5 fan behavior, not a universal target for every Raspberry Pi. Cooling fixes, from free changes to model-specific hardware

1. Improve airflow and placement

  • Keep ventilation openings clear and avoid enclosing the board in a location that traps heat.
  • Allow room for air to circulate around the board and avoid directing hot exhaust back into the enclosure.
  • If the board is uncased, consider mounting it on edge so air can circulate on both sides. Avoid laying it flat against a heat-insulating surface.
  • Recheck the stream after each placement change instead of making several changes at once; that makes it easier to tell which change affected the temperature or throttling.

Raspberry Pi’s historical Pi 4 thermal testing discusses airflow, orientation, and clearance for its own workloads. Its measured results are not a prediction for other models or for a YouTube stream. Raspberry Pi: Thermal testing Raspberry Pi 4.

2. Consider passive cooling or a ventilated enclosure

A passive heatsink or a case designed to allow airflow may suit a setup that needs better heat dissipation without a fan. Check that the product is made for the exact board and that it clears HATs, connectors, and cables. The available sources do not establish a universal passive-cooling winner for an unspecified build.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

3. Add active cooling only when the model and measurements support it

If your board is a Pi 5 and the representative stream still shows sustained heat or throttling after placement improvements, compare the Raspberry Pi 5 Active Cooler with the Pi 5 case fan. Both are official, temperature-controlled options. Confirm that the selected product fits the exact enclosure and clears attached HATs and cables before installation. The Active Cooler is a Pi 5 accessory, not a general Raspberry Pi recommendation. Raspberry Pi 5 Active Cooler and Pi 5 fan documentation.

For its Pi 5 testing, Raspberry Pi favors the Active Cooler over its fan case for overclockers; that specific context does not establish that it is the best choice for every continuous stream. There is no independent comparison here of either product in your stream setup. Consider fit, sustained temperature and throttling, noise, dust exposure and maintenance, power and connectivity, and local cost and availability.

How to tell whether a fix worked

  1. Repeat the same representative stream with the same resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and encoding method.
  2. Compare sustained temperature and throttling at similar ambient conditions, not just a brief startup reading.
  3. Note stream performance, fan noise, airflow, and any new clearance or maintenance issues.
  4. If there is no meaningful improvement, check the physical fit and airflow again, then reassess the workload and power symptoms instead of assuming a larger fan will solve the problem.

Troubleshooting symptoms that can look like overheating

  • Temperature rises, but the stream remains stable: check whether throttling is actually occurring and compare sustained behavior with the board’s model-specific guidance. Do not treat a single reading as proof of failure.
  • Throttling persists after improving placement: confirm the board model and attachments, then consider compatible cooling. Pi 5 accessories should only be fitted to a Pi 5 after checking clearance.
  • The Pi or stream behaves erratically: inspect power and network connections independently. Cooling cannot resolve a supply or connection issue.
  • A fan is installed but temperatures remain high: verify that it is compatible, correctly fitted, and able to move air through the enclosure; also check for blocked vents or recirculated exhaust.
