Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To loop a folder of MP4 files on YouTube Live, put the videos in the order you want in an FFmpeg concat list, then use -stream_loop -1 before that list as the input. FFmpeg can send the repeating playlist to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Test the event privately or unlisted and check YouTube’s preview and stream health before making it public.
1. Put the MP4 files in the intended playlist order
FFmpeg does not guarantee that a folder’s directory order matches the order you want viewers to see. Create a UTF-8 text file named playlist.txt and list each video explicitly, one per line:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'video-01.mp4'
file 'video-02.mp4'
file 'video-03.mp4'
The ffconcat version 1.0 header must be the first line exactly for automatic format recognition. The paths above are relative to the working directory; use paths that resolve correctly from where you run FFmpeg. The concat demuxer has quoting and escaping rules for filenames containing special characters, so consult the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation rather than assuming every path can be placed between single quotes unchanged.
2. Check that the files can be concatenated
The concat demuxer joins encoded packets; it does not make unlike files equivalent. It expects the same streams, codecs, and time bases in every file. Different stream layouts, codecs, time bases, or inaccurate duration metadata can cause errors, gaps, or artifacts at file boundaries. Unequal stream durations can also leave gaps as timestamps are adjusted between files.

| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | Files with matching streams, codecs, and time bases | Can pass through encoded packets, but mismatched files may fail or produce boundary problems. |
| Normalize or decode and re-encode | Files whose formats or stream layouts differ | Creates a consistent output, but requires decoding and encoding; CPU demand and output quality depend on the files and chosen settings. |
If the files do not meet the concat demuxer’s requirements, normalize them or use a filter-based workflow that decodes and re-encodes them. There is no single performance or quality result that applies to every source set.
3. Get the YouTube ingest URL and stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the encoder setup. Use the exact destination and key format YouTube provides for your stream; do not copy an example key or assume every account uses an identical URL.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in an article, screenshot, command transcript, or shared log. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings. See YouTube’s guides to creating a live stream with an encoder and managing live stream settings.
4. Run FFmpeg with the playlist looped
Here is an illustrative command shape for a 30 fps H.264/AAC output. Replace the destination with the exact server URL and stream key from Live Control Room, and adapt the settings to the source media, installed FFmpeg build, and current YouTube guidance:

The command’s frame rate and bitrate should fit your content and stable upload capacity.
This is not a tested universal command. FFmpeg builds differ, and the correct container and protocol must match the current YouTube ingest workflow. YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Its published encoder settings list RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options, with AAC or MP3 audio and constant bitrate encoding. Confirm the current requirements and your build’s capabilities on YouTube’s live encoder settings page.
Choose bitrate and keyframes for the actual output mode
YouTube’s current guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its H.264 bitrate recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate: for example, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations for those specific modes, not universal values for every codec or stream. Check the current table, choose a mode your system can encode, and make sure your upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate reliably.

5. Test before the public stream
- Start with a private or unlisted event so you can verify the setup without presenting it as a public broadcast.
- Check that YouTube’s preview appears and that audio is present.
- Watch a transition across at least one file boundary for missing audio, unexpected gaps, or timestamp problems.
- Check Live Control Room’s stream health and monitor the encoder output for errors before starting the public event. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; see its encoder settings guidance.
6. Account for long-running streams and YouTube rules
Process and connection continuity
An infinite playlist loop does not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. The FFmpeg process, host, network, storage, and power must remain available. For an unattended setup, plan for process supervision, disk availability, reconnect behavior, and monitoring. YouTube’s start and stop behavior depends on Live Control Room settings such as auto-start and auto-stop; review Manage live stream settings. The cited guidance does not promise uninterrupted operation.
Archive duration
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If your event will run longer or the recording matters, verify YouTube’s current behavior and make a separate recording plan rather than relying on an archive assumption. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Rights and channel eligibility
Only stream MP4s you have the rights to broadcast, including the music, footage, and any third-party material they contain. A live encoder connection does not grant permission to use copyrighted material, nor does looping original or licensed footage guarantee monetization. Check YouTube’s current copyright and channel monetization policies for the content and account involved before scheduling a recurring stream.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Troubleshoot common problems
- The playlist order is wrong: Edit and review the
filelines inplaylist.txt. Do not rely on the folder’s listing order. - FFmpeg rejects the concat list or a filename: Confirm the header is the first line, the file is UTF-8, paths resolve from the command’s working directory, and special characters follow concat-demuxer escaping rules.
- Concat errors, boundary gaps, or artifacts: Compare stream layouts, codecs, and time bases across files and check duration metadata. Normalize/re-encode incompatible sources or use a decode-and-filter approach.
- FFmpeg says an encoder is unavailable: The installed build may not include
libx264or the requested audio encoder. Use an available compatible encoder or install a build with the required support. - YouTube shows no preview or ingest errors: Recheck the server URL, stream key, protocol, output format, and encoder settings against the current Live Control Room configuration. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
- The stream plays too quickly or timestamps behave unexpectedly: Confirm
-reis applied to the local playlist input and test with the actual files. Avoid assuming the illustrative command fits every playlist. - The stream stops after a disconnect: A loop only repeats media while FFmpeg is running. Check process supervision, host/network stability, and YouTube’s reconnect and start/stop settings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this command loop one MP4 or the whole playlist?
It loops the concat input, so every file listed in playlist.txt plays in sequence before the list repeats.
Can I change the playlist order without changing the videos?
Yes. Reorder the file directives in playlist.txt, then restart FFmpeg with the edited list.
Can I use this exact command on Windows?
The command shown uses shell line continuations commonly used in Unix-like shells. Windows command shells use different continuation and quoting syntax, so adapt the command to the shell you run.
