If the Raspberry Pi streams a YouTube playlist over the internet, the playlist’s full runtime does not need to fit on its SD card. For a browser-based setup, Raspberry Pi recommends at least 32 GB for Raspberry Pi OS with desktop; the card holds the operating system, software and locally retained data, not the hours of streamed video.
Choose storage based on what the Pi keeps locally
| Setup | Storage starting point | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Online YouTube playback in a desktop browser | At least 32 GB | Raspberry Pi’s recommendation for Raspberry Pi OS desktop, not a measured requirement for a YouTube playlist. Raspberry Pi documentation |
| Raspberry Pi OS Lite | At least 8 GB | Raspberry Pi’s recommendation for Lite. It is an OS baseline, not confirmation that a browser-based playback setup will work on Lite or that this capacity can hold videos. Raspberry Pi documentation |
| Video files saved locally | OS storage plus the files’ combined size | Estimate file storage from the actual bitrate and total runtime, then leave space for other local data. |
Raspberry Pi computers need non-volatile boot media containing an operating system; microSD is the common boot medium. Raspberry Pi’s current getting-started documentation also says SD cards below 2 TB are supported. These are boot-media recommendations and a compatibility limit—not findings from a 24/7 YouTube playback test.
Online playlist: the video duration does not fill the card
When a browser plays a YouTube playlist online, video is streamed rather than saved as a complete local archive. For a desktop/browser arrangement, use the 32 GB desktop OS recommendation as the starting point. The browser may use storage for cache, but the official sources cited here do not specify a fixed cache size for continuous playback on a Raspberry Pi.
Raspberry Pi’s kiosk tutorial describes using a graphical web browser and specifies a Raspberry Pi 3 or newer with at least 1 GB of RAM for that tutorial. It does not guarantee uninterrupted YouTube playback or quantify storage use. Raspberry Pi kiosk tutorial

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Local files: estimate storage from bitrate and runtime
If you have video files stored on the Pi, estimate their size with this practical formula:
Decimal GB ≈ bitrate in Mb/s × duration in hours × 0.45

For example, a total of 24 hours of video at 1 Mb/s works out to about 10.8 GB; at 5 Mb/s it is about 54 GB. These are arithmetic estimates, not claims about a particular YouTube stream or video. Add the file total to the storage needed for the OS and other retained data, and leave room for updates and normal use. The sources do not specify a universal free-space buffer.
Do not assume YouTube downloads become Pi-ready files
YouTube’s official offline-download help describes features subject to eligibility, account, geographic, device or browser, and video-availability conditions. It does not establish a general way to save any playlist as ordinary local video files for a Raspberry Pi. An offline download should not be treated as a transferable video file or as a ready-made local playlist. See YouTube’s offline videos help and YouTube Premium membership benefits.

Plan the card before buying
- Decide whether playback is online or local. For online YouTube playback, the playlist runtime is not the amount of video storage to buy.
- Choose the OS setup. For Raspberry Pi OS desktop, start from the current 32 GB recommendation. The 8 GB Lite recommendation applies to Lite and does not establish that it suits a browser kiosk.
- If keeping files locally, total their sizes. Use the actual files’ bitrate and runtime for an estimate, or check their file sizes directly.
- Add the OS and other local data. Leave extra capacity for updates and anything else you intend to store; no universal buffer is published in the cited sources.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock using uploaded videos, a Raspberry Pi is not the only option. StreamNeo is a cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home, and the cloud keeps looping the uploaded videos.
