To make a 24/7 rain ambience stream with distant city traffic, combine audio you have the right to broadcast with an original or licensed visual, send it to an eligible YouTube channel through an encoder such as OBS Studio, and choose settings your internet connection can sustain. Test the complete mix before going live, monitor stream health, and keep your own recording: YouTube may not capture a livestream that runs longer than 12 hours.
1. Check that your YouTube channel can livestream
YouTube’s current help guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and says streamers must be at least 16. Eligibility rules can change; confirm your channel’s status in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room before preparing a long broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance describes channel eligibility and setup.
2. Create a rain-and-traffic soundscape you can legally use
Choose original recordings or properly licensed audio
You can record rain and distant traffic yourself, or use third-party audio whose license explicitly permits continuous livestreaming and replay or archive use. Keep copies of licenses, receipts, source details, and any relevant permissions. A license does not necessarily prevent an automated live interruption: YouTube says a rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm this with the rights holder before launch. YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams explains how copyright matches can affect a broadcast.
A stereo field recorder is optional if you want original location recordings; it is not required if you already have suitable, cleared audio. When recording in public, choose a safe location and avoid capturing identifiable conversations or other sounds you do not intend to publish.

Make the audio loop feel intentional
Rain and traffic can be layered or mixed into a continuous bed, but listen across the loop boundary for abrupt changes in level, tone, or ambience. Keep distant traffic subordinate to the rain if that is the intended mood, and check the mix on headphones and ordinary speakers. A single still or slowly changing visual can work, but the sound should be deliberate rather than an unnoticed repeated fragment.
3. Build a simple visual and audio scene in OBS
OBS Studio is a no-cost encoder option. The OBS Project says its software has no watermark or use limitations and can be used commercially. OBS Studio’s overview describes the software.

- Prepare your media. Create an original or licensed visual, then have the finished ambience audio ready as a file or continuous source. Make sure the visual and audio licenses cover streaming and any saved replay.
- Create a scene. In OBS, add an image or video source for the visual and an audio source for the rain-and-traffic mix. If using a file as a looping source, enable its loop option and confirm it resumes smoothly. The exact source controls vary by media type and OBS version.
- Check levels and sync. Play the scene and watch the audio meters. Listen for clipping, silence, sudden jumps, or an unintended gap when the audio loops. If the visual includes motion, confirm it repeats or continues as intended.
- Keep the scene manageable. A still or low-motion visual avoids unnecessary video complexity. Use a resolution and frame rate that your computer and upload connection can handle steadily.
4. Create the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create a live broadcast. Choose its title, description, privacy, and other settings before you start.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder setup and enter them in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not share it, show it in a recording, or publish it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Use RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for sending the stream. Select the server and protocol offered by YouTube’s current setup screen rather than relying on an old saved address.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Start the public broadcast only after YouTube receives the signal and the audio, visual, and status indicators look right.
5. Set quality to match your upload connection
YouTube’s current encoder recommendations specify CBR encoding and a 2-second keyframe interval, with 4 seconds as the maximum. For H.264 at 30 fps, YouTube lists 14 Mbps for 1080p and 8 Mbps for 720p. These are recommendations, not guarantees that a particular home connection will hold the rate; use a speed test and a representative test broadcast before committing to a continuous stream. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists current recommendations.
| Output choice | YouTube H.264 recommendation | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | Lower upload demand and encoder load; less visual detail. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | More visual detail; needs a connection that can sustain the higher rate. |
For a mostly static ambience scene, a higher resolution may not add much to the viewing experience if the visual is simple. Pick a stable setting rather than the highest available setting. Leave headroom for normal variation in your connection, and test while other household devices are using the network as they normally would.

6. Test, monitor, and plan for interruptions
Run a representative test
Test the actual audio mix, visual motion, encoder settings, and network path you intend to use. Watch the YouTube stream health indicators and listen to the received stream, not just OBS’s local preview. OBS explains that rising dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a configured bitrate the connection cannot maintain. OBS’s network troubleshooting guide covers dropped frames and connection issues.
Know what to do if the broadcast drops
- Dropped frames or unstable stream: reduce bitrate or output resolution, use a more reliable wired connection if possible, and check whether other devices or applications are using upload bandwidth.
- YouTube reports a copyright issue or the live stops: check the Live Control Room and channel dashboard for the specific notice or strike. YouTube advises: “If your live stream stops, check your YouTube Studio dashboard for strikes.” Contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting where appropriate; do not assume a purchased license automatically clears a live match.
- OBS appears to stream but YouTube has no signal: verify the selected server, stream URL, and current key in OBS against YouTube Studio. If you reset or replaced the key, update OBS before reconnecting.
- Audio or video is missing: check the corresponding OBS source visibility, selected input or media file, and audio meters; then confirm the YouTube preview receives the corrected output before restarting publicly.
A continuous broadcast also depends on the computer, encoder, power, and internet connection staying available. If any of those fail, the stream can stop; test your recovery procedure rather than assuming a local setup will resume by itself.

7. Decide how to handle 24/7 archives
YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours and recommends making a local recording backup. It warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, so a YouTube replay is not a dependable sole copy of a 24/7 broadcast. YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance describes the archive limitation.
If replay availability matters, plan broadcast segments shorter than 12 hours and verify how your channel’s Live Control Room handles the handoffs. A local recording gives you a creator-controlled copy, but it also uses disk space and needs to be checked and backed up. Retain your original source files regardless of whether YouTube creates an archive.

8. Understand monetization and reused-content risk
Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions. YouTube’s monetization policy says content should be original and authentic, and flags generic, repetitive, or mass-produced material. On July 15, 2025, YouTube said it clarified its existing policy to include repetitive or mass-produced content and renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content.” A continuously running stream, a license, or a self-made loop by itself does not establish that the channel qualifies for monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policies explain the policy.
