To run a 24/7 birdsong livestream with changing dawn and dusk visuals, use an encoder such as OBS to send a continuous feed to YouTube, loop rights-cleared birdsong, and schedule OBS scene changes. YouTube does not automatically change your visuals with sunrise: you must configure and test the scene schedule for your chosen time zone. A 24-hour broadcast also needs a separate archive plan because YouTube may not capture a stream longer than 12 hours.
Choose how to keep the stream running
YouTube supports software and hardware encoders. For a flexible, low-cost desktop setup, OBS is free, open-source streaming software listed by YouTube. A local encoder gives you direct control over scenes and transitions, but the computer, OBS, and internet connection must keep operating.
YouTube also lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for continuous prerecorded-video streams. That listing is an option to evaluate, not a guarantee of reliability or a comparative price recommendation. Consider whether you need detailed scene scheduling, how you will monitor the feed, and whether you need a local recording.
Prepare the audio and visuals
Use media you have permission to stream
Before building the scenes, confirm that your birdsong recording and every still image or video clip are cleared for the intended YouTube use, territories, duration, and monetization. A recording found online is not automatically free to rebroadcast. YouTube says copyright matches or strikes can affect livestreaming; see its copyright guidance for live streams and copyright basics.

Make a continuous audio bed
In OBS, a Media Source can play an audio or video file and loop it. If you have several tracks, VLC Video can loop a playlist, but VLC must be installed. Use a separate birdsong source in each scene, or keep the audio source available across the scene changes; either way, test that the sound continues cleanly when the active scene changes. Listen for silence, clicks, abrupt level shifts, and unintended gaps at the loop point.
Build distinct Dawn and Dusk scenes
Create a consistent OBS canvas and output format, then add two named scenes, such as Dawn and Dusk. Add the corresponding licensed image or video to each scene and place your birdsong source so it remains audible. Set a transition such as Fade or Cut in OBS, then preview the composition and check for black frames, cropped visuals, or mismatched audio.

Schedule dawn and dusk scene changes in OBS
OBS Advanced Scene Switcher has a Macro Schedule feature for running macro actions at a selected date and time. Use a macro that changes the active scene, and configure schedule entries for the times you want Dawn and Dusk to appear.
- Install and open OBS Advanced Scene Switcher, then find its Macro Schedule tab.
- Create or select a macro whose action switches the active scene to Dawn or Dusk.
- Set the date and time for each change, checking which time zone OBS and your schedule use. Choose a location and artistic transition window; the exact sunrise and sunset times depend on that choice.
- Preview both changes in a private or unlisted stream. Check the transition, audio continuity, and the outgoing YouTube preview.
- Restart OBS and verify that your schedule behaves as intended after a restart before depending on it unattended.
Scheduling capability is documented by the plugin, but the appropriate local sunrise and sunset times are your decision. A fixed daily schedule may not match seasonal daylight changes; revise it when needed.

Enable YouTube livestreaming and connect OBS
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned launch.
- Create the livestream in YouTube Studio. Choose the visibility that fits your test or launch: public, private, or unlisted. Scheduling can show an upcoming stream to subscribers.
- Copy the stream URL and key into OBS. Enter them in OBS stream settings and keep the key private, as you would a password. Do not reveal it in screenshots, source files, or the broadcast.
- Check the preview before going live. Confirm that YouTube receives the intended scene and audio, then start the stream when ready.
YouTube distinguishes a liveBroadcast, the watchable event, from a liveStream, the transmitted audio/video settings. Most creators can set up this workflow in YouTube Studio without using the API; API-based scheduled or recurring events are an optional, more technical route. The YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes those resources and was last updated 2026-09-14.
Test and monitor the broadcast
Before relying on an unattended stream, verify the whole path: OBS output, YouTube preview, public or unlisted watch page, and playback on a mobile device. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. Those are event-preparation recommendations, not guarantees for a continuous 24/7 deployment.

- Listen to the live watch page, not only the audio meters in OBS.
- Watch at least one scheduled Dawn-to-Dusk and Dusk-to-Dawn change.
- Check the stream health and confirm that visuals are not frozen or black.
- Keep monitoring arrangements in place; an always-on stream can still lose its source, connection, or audio.
Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
YouTube Help says: “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” The same guidance warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single 24/7 session should therefore not be treated as a dependable replay archive.
If preserving the broadcast matters, make and check a local recording backup, with enough storage for the recording duration. YouTube also recommends checking local archive files. Plan the recording separately from the live output, and verify that the file is playable rather than assuming the stream page will contain a complete replay. Rights, audience settings, and stream controls
In YouTube’s livestream settings, review visibility, DVR controls, and rights-management options before launch. Copyright claims or strikes can affect live access, so resolve permissions for both sound and imagery before you broadcast.
If the stream is set as made for kids, YouTube lists restrictions including disabled live chat and reminder notifications; personalized ads are also disabled on livestreams and Premieres. Do not build the experience around chat or assume the usual monetization features will be available with that audience setting. See YouTube’s made-for-kids guidance.
Troubleshoot common problems
The stream does not start
- Check that livestreaming is enabled for the channel, that the channel is verified, and that there is no current restriction.
- Confirm OBS has the correct stream URL and key. If you replace or reset the key in YouTube, update OBS as well.
- Wait for first-time live enablement if it has not completed; YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours.
The scene does not change on schedule
- Confirm the Macro Schedule entry is enabled and points to the macro that switches to the intended scene.
- Check the scheduled date, time, and time zone, then test the macro manually and observe a scheduled transition.
- After restarting OBS, check that the plugin and schedule are available and behaving as expected.
Birdsong cuts out or clicks during a transition
- Check whether the audio source is present and active in both scenes, or otherwise remains available when scenes switch.
- Listen through the loop boundary and inspect the source file for a gap or abrupt cut.
- Test transitions while monitoring the YouTube watch page, since the final encoded output is what viewers hear.
The replay is missing or incomplete
A session exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Use and verify a local recording if you need an archive of a 24/7 broadcast.
