Can a 24/7 YouTube Sleep Sounds Stream Use One MP4 File?

One MP4 can provide the repeating program for a 24/7 YouTube Live stream, but an encoder must send it and remain online. Here’s how to set it up and plan for YouTube’s replay limits.

Yes. One MP4 can supply the repeating sleep-sounds program for a 24/7 YouTube Live stream, but it cannot broadcast by itself. An encoder such as OBS must play the file in a loop and send the live feed to YouTube; the computer and internet connection running that encoder must remain available. A cloud playout service can take over that always-on role.

What one MP4 can—and cannot—do

The MP4 is the source media: it contains the audio and any visuals you want viewers to see. Encoder software turns that playback into a live feed and transmits it to YouTube. In OBS Studio, a Media Source supports MP4 files and has a Loop option that restarts playback when the file ends. OBS Media Sources; YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Looping the file does not, on its own, make delivery uninterrupted. With a local encoder, the computer, OBS, power and internet connection all have to keep working. A playback gap at the loop point, a computer restart or a connection failure can interrupt what viewers receive.

Set up a one-file stream with OBS

  1. Check that your channel can go live. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.
  2. Add and test your MP4 in OBS. Create a scene, add a Media Source, select the file and enable Loop. Listen through the end-to-start transition before broadcasting, especially if the audio is intended to play continuously. This is a useful production check, not a guarantee that every file will loop without an audible seam. OBS lists MP4 as a supported video format in its Media Sources documentation.
  3. Create a YouTube Live broadcast and connect OBS. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream, then enter the stream URL and stream key in the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission. See Manage live stream settings and Choose live encoder settings.
  4. Set the encoder output for your connection. The output settings apply to the feed OBS sends to YouTube, not necessarily to the MP4’s own codec. YouTube’s settings guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video options; AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Choose a resolution, frame rate and bitrate your upload connection can sustain. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, test before going live, and monitor stream health using its live-streaming tips.
  5. Keep the whole local setup running. Leave the computer powered on, prevent sleep or shutdown, and keep OBS and the internet connection available. A software failure, power cut or outage can stop the live feed. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; its guidance also identifies cloud-based prerecorded-video playout as another way to send content. Its documentation does not establish an uptime guarantee for a particular local configuration or service. YouTube live-streaming tips; encoder setup.

Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR limits

A 24/7 broadcast is not the same as a reliably saved 24-hour replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours “may not be captured at all.” If you need a replay, make and verify a separate local recording rather than relying on YouTube’s archive. You could instead end and restart broadcasts comfortably before the threshold, but that interrupts continuity and may create multiple live entries. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

DVR rewind is a separate consideration: YouTube says rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers may not be able to rewind across the full broadcast or depend on pause and resume to cover its entire duration. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Clear rights for every sound and image

Use audio and visuals you have the rights to include in the live broadcast and any replay. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content; if matched material remains after a warning, the broadcast can be interrupted or terminated. Even if you have licensed a track, YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist or the stream can still be interrupted. YouTube copyright guidance.

Check that any music licence covers live streaming, the relevant territories and archive or replay use. YouTube’s live-stream terms say providers represent that they have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of their live content, including applicable music rights. A file playing successfully does not establish permission to broadcast it. YouTube livestream terms.

Keep OBS running yourself or use cloud playout

For a local OBS setup, the key question is whether you can keep a computer and connection running and respond if the feed fails. Cloud playout moves the playback and transmission off your home computer. YouTube’s encoder help recognizes cloud-based prerecorded-video streaming as an available category, but compare specific services on their own stated features; the platform guidance does not verify vendors’ uptime or pricing.
