Raspberry Pi YouTube Live Stream Stops After a Few Hours: Causes and Fixes

A stream that stops after hours can fail at several points. Use YouTube diagnostics, encoder output, and Pi logs to find the cause before changing settings or hardware.

A Raspberry Pi stream that stops after several hours does not point to one specific fault. First find out whether the Pi or capture process stopped, the encoder failed, the network connection stalled, or YouTube ingest reported a problem. Check YouTube’s Live Control Room diagnostics alongside encoder output and system logs before changing hardware or adding automatic retries.

Diagnose where the stream is failing

Use the same time window for YouTube diagnostics, encoder output, and Raspberry Pi logs. A local recording, if your setup makes one, can help distinguish a source or capture problem from a problem further down the streaming path.

  1. Check YouTube Live Control Room. Note any reported stream errors and when they occurred. YouTube says encoder issues are more likely when viewers on different internet connections report problems; reports limited to viewers on one shared network may point to that network instead. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guide gives further checks.
  2. Check the source, encoder, and Pi. Confirm that the capture process and encoder were still running at the failure time. Review encoder errors, CPU load, system logs, and a local archive if available. YouTube recommends checking encoder software, stream quality, CPU load, local recording, and outbound connectivity when troubleshooting third-party encoders.
  3. Separate a process exit from a stalled connection. Record the process exit status and inspect the logs around the interruption for disconnects, queue-overflow messages, or output falling below real time. If the Pi process exited, investigate the capture or encoder path. If it stayed alive but stopped sending usable data, examine the connection and output pipeline.
  4. Look for latency growth. If delay steadily increases before buffering or failure, record that pattern and check how frames and data move through the capture, encoding, and output stages. One community report describes growing latency in a custom rpicam-vid stream; that is a clue to investigate, not proof of a universal cause.
  5. Check outbound connectivity. If the local source and encoder output look healthy but YouTube reports an unhealthy stream, test the Pi’s outbound internet connection and look for interruptions or throughput that cannot be sustained.
  6. Check for low-voltage warnings. Search the Pi’s kernel logs around the failure. A warning is concrete evidence to investigate power delivery; the symptom alone is not. Raspberry Pi advises using a higher-quality supply and cable when low-voltage warnings occur.

Match the fix to the evidence

If logs show low voltage or power instability

Use a supply and cable suitable for the exact Pi model, and account for attached peripherals. Raspberry Pi’s current hardware documentation recommends a 27 W USB-C supply for Raspberry Pi 5, a 3 A USB-C supply for Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 400, and a 2.5 A micro USB supply for Raspberry Pi 1–3. These are model-specific supply recommendations, not measurements of what your setup consumes or proof that power caused a particular interruption. Raspberry Pi also warns: “Low quality power supplies can corrupt storage or cause unpredictable behaviour within the Raspberry Pi.” See its power-supply guidance.

If the capture source or encoder reports errors

Update the encoder to the latest version available for your setup, then inspect its error output and CPU load. Check a local recording if you have one: if it is also corrupted or incomplete, focus on capture and encoding before changing the YouTube output settings. Test another encoder only when logs or a controlled comparison point to an encoder-specific fault.

If the network drops or cannot sustain the output

Investigate interruptions between the Pi and the internet and whether stable outbound throughput is sufficient for the stream. A retry setting may reconnect after a brief interruption, but it cannot make an unreliable connection stable. YouTube’s troubleshooting advice for third-party encoders recommends testing outbound connectivity when the encoder stream itself looks and sounds healthy.

If FFmpeg reports a transient output failure

FFmpeg documents a FIFO pseudo-muxer with recovery options for certain output failures. That can help where evidence shows that a temporary output error is the problem; it does not repair a persistent network fault, an overloaded CPU, a failing source, or inadequate power. Check the documentation for the FFmpeg version installed and validate the configured options before relying on them: FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation.

If the pipeline uses a Raspberry Pi camera

Check the complete path from camera capture through encoding to YouTube ingest, including audio and output format. Raspberry Pi’s camera-networking examples describe rpicam-vid streaming over UDP or TCP, MPEG-2 Transport Stream for broader downstream compatibility, compatible audio formats, and third-party server options. They are not a universal YouTube RTMP command. Choose settings that match your Pi model, capture software, audio setup, encoder, and actual output protocol; see Raspberry Pi camera network-streaming documentation.

Why a stream can stop after hours

The duration alone cannot identify the cause. A process may exit, an encoder may fail, a connection may stall, or YouTube may flag an ingest problem. Community reports describe both FFmpeg queue overflow and latency growth in individual setups. Treat those as specific log patterns worth checking—not as established explanations for all long-running Raspberry Pi streams.

Likewise, do not replace the power supply simply because the stream ran for a few hours before stopping. First check for low-voltage warnings and confirm the current supply, cable, Pi model, and connected devices. Power, encoder configuration, network stability, and FIFO recovery address different failure classes.

Keep a failure record while testing

Change one relevant item at a time and record whether the stream recovers. For the next interruption, save:
