For a new Raspberry Pi appliance that plays pre-recorded videos to YouTube, the Raspberry Pi 5 is the best general-purpose starting point. It has a quad-core 2.4GHz CPU, Gigabit Ethernet and 4K HEVC decoding. But it has no hardware H.264 encoder: if your workflow needs H.264 output, the Pi 5 must encode in software, so the right choice depends on your files, software and target settings.

If you want the stream to continue without leaving a computer at home on, a cloud service is the simpler alternative: StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud.

Which Raspberry Pi model should you choose?

Raspberry Pi 5: best flexible default

The Pi 5 is the strongest general-purpose recommendation for a new setup. Raspberry Pi lists a quad-core 2.4GHz Cortex-A76 processor, Gigabit Ethernet, a microSD slot and USB 3 ports; it can decode 4K HEVC. Those capabilities make it a good base for file playback and encoding, provided the chosen software supports the file and output format.

There is an important qualification: Pi 5 does not have a hardware H.264 encoder. Raspberry Pi’s 2026 H.264 paper reports real-time 1080p30 software encoding in the configurations it tested. The low-latency configuration used as little as 60% of one CPU core; a higher-quality preset used approximately 100–150% of one core. These are vendor test results, not a guarantee for every file, software build or continuous broadcast. Raspberry Pi 5 product information · Raspberry Pi’s 2026 H.264 paper

Raspberry Pi 4 Model B: consider it for a hardware H.264 workflow

The Pi 4 Model B has hardware H.264 encoding; the Pi 5 does not. A Pi 4 can be a legitimate alternative if your encoder software can use that hardware and you have tested the exact workflow. The hardware distinction alone does not establish which board will be faster end to end, nor does it establish that the Pi 4 is cheaper or more reliable for your use.

Choose by the work the board must do

  • Pass-through or remux: If the source can be sent in a format YouTube accepts without video transcoding, the encoder has less work to do. Confirm that your particular application supports the file, audio and live-ingest path.
  • Transcoding: If the software must change the video codec, resolution or frame rate, CPU or hardware-encoder capability matters more. A Pi 5 can software-encode 1080p30 in Raspberry Pi’s tested configurations, but that does not prove it can transcode every source or sustain your specific setup indefinitely.
  • Higher output demands: Do not assume that 4K decoding means 4K encoding. Match the source, output resolution and codec to what the board and application actually support, then test the whole pipeline.
  • Unattended looping and recovery: Verify that your chosen application can repeat the file and reconnect after an internet or YouTube interruption. Board specifications cannot guarantee those software behaviors.

What you need for a fixed 24/7 Pi setup

Part Practical choice Why it matters
Board Raspberry Pi 5; 4GB is a defensible starting configuration for a single stream Memory needs depend on the operating system and encoder software. Raspberry Pi lists multiple memory variants on its product page. Raspberry Pi 5
Power supply Raspberry Pi 27W USB-C Power Supply, rated 5V/5A for Pi 5 Raspberry Pi recommends this supply. With a 3A supply, downstream USB current is limited to 600mA, which can matter if you attach storage or other peripherals. Raspberry Pi power-supply guidance
Cooling Pi 5-compatible active cooler or fan case for sustained encoding loads Raspberry Pi says active cooling helps Pi 5 perform best, particularly under heavy load. The official case has an integrated fan; the cooling needs of a playback-only workload may differ. Raspberry Pi cases and accessories
Video storage microSD or USB 3 storage sized for your video library Account for library size and USB power draw. Raspberry Pi recommends a powered hub when attached devices exceed the board’s power budget. Raspberry Pi USB power guidance
Network Wired Gigabit Ethernet where practical A fixed wired connection avoids relying on Wi-Fi for a continuous stream, but the internet upload connection still needs enough sustained capacity for the selected bitrate. Test it with your actual settings.

Set the YouTube ingest format and bitrate

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the feed to its servers, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Supported ingest codecs do not mean every Raspberry Pi application can encode or pass through each one. YouTube live encoder settings

H.264 output example YouTube recommended ingest bitrate Key point
1080p30 5 Mbps YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest value; it is not a Raspberry Pi performance measurement.
1080p60 6 Mbps YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest value; confirm that both the encoder and internet connection can sustain it.

Choose a codec, frame rate and bitrate supported by your encoder and source. Leave upload headroom rather than targeting the full measured capacity of an unstable connection. Preview the incoming signal in YouTube Live Control Room and check stream health before relying on the broadcast.

Set up and test before leaving it unattended

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-stream restrictions during the preceding 90 days. Enable live streaming in advance if the channel has not streamed before; availability may take time to activate. YouTube live-streaming setup
  2. Prepare a compatible source and encoder. Confirm that your file’s codec, resolution, frame rate and audio are supported by the chosen Pi software. Determine whether it passes through, remuxes or transcodes the video; this changes the workload substantially.
  3. Set encoder parameters. Select RTMPS when available, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a codec and bitrate suited to the output. For H.264, YouTube’s examples include 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 6 Mbps at 1080p60. Use an output resolution and frame rate your software can sustain.
  4. Get the ingest credentials. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s destination settings. Treat the key like a password: do not post it, include it in screenshots, or share it. YouTube encoder setup
  5. Preview, then test the loop. Confirm YouTube receives the feed and reports healthy stream status. Let the file play through its end to verify that looping works, then test recovery by safely restarting the encoder and checking what happens after a network interruption.
  6. Run a soak test. Leave the complete setup running long enough to expose overheating, storage, power, application or network problems. Monitor CPU load, temperature, dropped frames, stream health and whether the encoder reconnects. A Pi model recommendation is not a verified reliability result for an unspecified software stack.

Important YouTube archive and rights limitations

A 24-hour stream may not produce a replay

YouTube says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” It cautions that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete recording matters, keep a local copy and consider separate shorter broadcasts rather than relying on one uninterrupted day-long stream for the archive. Only stream material you have rights to use

Pre-recorded does not mean cleared for live broadcast. Make sure you have the necessary rights for the video, music, images and any other material in the file, including permission for a continuous public stream. YouTube’s copyright rules and monetization policies apply to live content too; a stream can be interrupted or receive a claim even when it is simply looping an uploaded recording.

Common problems and what to check

  • The Pi struggles to encode: Check whether the application is transcoding rather than passing through, and inspect CPU load and dropped frames. Reduce resolution or frame rate, choose a less demanding encoding setting, or test whether a supported hardware-encoding workflow on Pi 4 better fits the task.
  • The stream disconnects or buffers: Check YouTube stream health, encoder logs and sustained upload capacity. Prefer wired Ethernet where practical, lower the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it, and confirm that the software actually reconnects after a network loss.
  • The board slows down during a long run: Check temperature, power supply and peripherals. Pi 5 benefits from active cooling under heavy loads; a 3A supply limits downstream USB current, and a power-hungry external drive may need a powered hub.
  • YouTube receives no signal: Recheck the stream URL and key, ingest protocol and encoder destination. Confirm the channel can currently livestream and that the key has not been changed or copied incorrectly.
  • The video does not loop or resume: Treat this as an application configuration issue, not a board feature. Test file-end behavior, process restart and reconnect recovery before deployment; the exact application and version determine the controls.
  • No full-day replay appears: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived by YouTube. Keep your own recording if the full program is important.

What the Pi costs beyond the board

The total setup also needs an appropriate USB-C power supply, cooling, storage and a reliable internet connection. Actual retailer prices vary by country and date, so compare current local prices for the board and accessories rather than assuming Pi 4 is cheaper. A Pi also requires you to maintain the hardware, software, network and recovery behavior yourself; the cited specifications do not establish a general electricity cost or 24/7 failure rate.
