You can run OBS on a Mac mini for a continuous YouTube livestream, but neither a compatible Mac nor recommended encoder settings guarantee that the stream will stay uninterrupted. Confirm your channel can go live, choose settings your Mac and upload connection can sustain, test the complete production, and plan how you will detect and recover from failures.
What this setup can—and cannot—do
OBS on a Mac mini is suited to a stream assembled from live inputs, overlays, and changing scenes. The Mac generates and sends the feed, so the stream depends on the computer, OBS, and its network connection remaining available. That differs from continuously replaying uploaded videos, which can use a cloud playback service instead of a dedicated computer.
OBS supports Intel and Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later. Its project cautions that meeting the baseline requirements does not establish that a particular system can stream successfully; demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Use the OBS system requirements and Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test your actual scenes and workload.
Apple’s Mac mini technical specifications page, accessed in 2026, covers M6 and M5 Pro configurations and lists hardware-accelerated H.264 and HEVC encoding. Those capabilities are not a published 24/7 OBS capacity test. Do not infer a guaranteed streaming duration or performance level from the chip specification.

Prepare the YouTube channel and live event
- Enable live streaming early. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until launch day. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- Create or schedule the event. Use YouTube Live Control Room to set up the broadcast and choose its visibility and schedule.
- Get the connection details. YouTube describes the stream key as both the encoder’s feed address and password; the stream URL tells the encoder where to send the feed. Treat the key as a credential: do not show it in screenshots, public guides, or screen recordings. Details are in YouTube’s live stream settings guide.
- Use RTMPS when supported. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP transported over TLS/SSL. Choose the supported secure ingest option in the event and enter its URL and key in OBS.
Install OBS and choose the encoder for your Mac
Install a current OBS version compatible with your macOS, then run its Auto-Configuration Wizard. Confirm the result against the Mac’s processor type rather than assuming Intel and Apple Silicon use the same encoder path.
- Apple Silicon: OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox hardware streaming with H.264. It can reduce reliance on CPU-based encoding, but still needs validation with your sources, scenes, and target output.
- Intel: OBS says VideoToolbox streaming is unsupported for services requiring constant bitrate and directs Intel users to x264. This makes the encoder choice and CPU load especially important to test on older Mac mini models.
See OBS’s hardware encoding documentation. Regardless of model, run the real scene composition for long enough to expose rendering or encoding overload before relying on it continuously.

Choose YouTube output settings and upload capacity
For a typical SDR H.264 stream, YouTube’s undated encoder-settings guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends these video bitrates. They are platform recommendations, not a promise of stability.
| Output target | H.264 video bitrate | Key settings |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | CBR; 2-second keyframe interval, not more than 4 seconds |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | CBR; 2-second keyframe interval, not more than 4 seconds |
Set audio to AAC or MP3. YouTube’s advanced SDR recommendations include Rec. 709 color, 44.1 kHz stereo, and 128 kbps stereo audio. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for other resolutions, frame rates, or formats rather than extrapolating from the 1080p examples.

Leave upload headroom
Test upload—not download—capacity on the connection the Mac mini will actually use. YouTube recommends about 20% upload headroom and says to account for both primary and backup streams if you send one. Its streaming tips warn that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.
For a 5 Mbps video target plus 128 kbps audio, the encoded payload is about 5.13 Mbps before transport overhead. Adding 20% produces a rough minimum of about 6.2 Mbps of usable upload for that single stream. This is arithmetic from YouTube’s bitrate and headroom recommendations, not a separately published benchmark; a shared or variable connection calls for more margin.

Configure OBS and test the full broadcast
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key or connect through the available account flow. If configuring a custom server, use the event’s YouTube stream URL and key; keep the key private.
- Set the output deliberately. In Settings > Output, use the chosen encoder and CBR bitrate appropriate to the target in YouTube’s table. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds and avoid exceeding 4 seconds.
- Set video and audio. In Settings > Video, choose the intended output resolution and frame rate. For SDR, use Rec. 709 where the relevant controls are available. Configure stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps as the YouTube advanced recommendations specify.
- Build the actual scene. Add the same capture sources, graphics, transitions, and audio routing planned for the continuous stream. A light test scene does not establish that a more complex production will run reliably.
- Test with realistic movement and sound. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast. Start OBS, preview the event in Live Control Room, and check the stream-health indicator and messages.
- Check viewers’ access. Confirm the channel or watch page opens as intended, and check playback on a mobile device as well as the production computer.
- Practice an interruption response. Verify how the system behaves if the network or encoder connection drops, and decide who or what will notice an outage and restart the encoder. Test any backup encoder or recovery process. Do not assume OBS or macOS will automatically restart a failed production.
YouTube’s event guidance suggests configuring at least two hours before a scheduled broadcast and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before it. For an always-on channel, apply the same principle before announcing the launch: leave time to resolve warnings and inspect audio and picture rather than going live at the last moment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Operate a 24/7 stream responsibly
- Monitor YouTube stream health, OBS status, picture, and audio; a silent source or stalled scene can persist even when the process appears to be running.
- Plan for power, network, software, and hardware interruptions. A locally produced stream relies on the Mac mini and its connection; test recovery and establish a practical way to receive outage alerts.
- Use only content you have rights to broadcast. A continuous stream does not exempt music, footage, or other material from copyright rules. Review YouTube’s current policies and permissions for the material and account involved.
- Do not promise viewers that one stream will remain uninterrupted or produce one complete archive. YouTube’s current maximum duration for one continuous event and the archival behavior for a 24/7 run are not established here; verify YouTube’s current guidance if a continuous archive matters.
Which approach fits: live OBS production or cloud playback?
If the channel needs real-time sources, changing scenes, or overlays controlled on the Mac, OBS is the relevant workflow. If the goal is simply to replay uploaded videos continuously, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams; that is a different workflow, and its current terms and feature details should be checked directly.
