Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo loop a compatible video file on YouTube Live without re-encoding it, use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option and -c copy output option. This repeats the file indefinitely and copies its encoded audio and video streams instead of decoding and encoding them again. It works only when the source streams can be muxed into the output YouTube accepts; it does not guarantee a seamless loop for every file.
What no re-encoding does—and does not—mean
In FFmpeg, -c copy requests stream copy: packets pass from the input demuxer to the output muxer without decoding or encoding. It avoids a new encode at your end, so it is fast and does not introduce another generation of encoding loss.
Stream copy cannot apply filters, resize or change codecs. It may fail if the output container needs information that the source does not provide, or if the input streams are incompatible with the chosen output. A copied stream also does not guarantee a clean transition at the file boundary: timestamps and other source-specific behavior can cause a gap or glitch. Test the actual file and feed rather than assuming every MP4 will loop cleanly.
“Without re-encoding” describes your FFmpeg output workflow, not how YouTube delivers playback. YouTube processes live streams, and its documentation does not promise that viewers receive the original file bytes untouched.

Before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to stream live. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- FFmpeg installed on the computer that will send the stream, and a video file with the audio and video streams you intend to broadcast.
- The YouTube stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Keep the key private: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If exposed, reset it in Studio. See Manage live stream settings.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the outgoing stream. YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate; see its stream setup guidance.
Loop the file and send it to YouTube with FFmpeg
1. Create or select an encoder stream
In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live, then create or select an encoder stream in Live Control Room. The exact screen may vary as YouTube updates Studio. Find the server URL and stream key for that stream.
2. Check the file and destination compatibility
Confirm the file contains the intended audio and video. The command below asks FFmpeg to copy both streams as-is, so it cannot repair an unsupported codec, add a missing track, change resolution or apply a filter. If the file cannot be muxed into the selected live output, prepare a compatible remux or re-encode offline, or use a workflow that encodes the feed.

3. Run the loop
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "input.mp4" -c copy -f flv "<YouTube server URL>/<stream key>"
Replace input.mp4 with your file path and replace the placeholders with the destination values shown by YouTube. Keep the stream key private, including in terminal history, logs, screenshots and shared scripts. Put -stream_loop -1 before the input it applies to; it means repeat that input indefinitely. Put -c copy before the output to request stream copy. -re paces file reading in real time rather than sending the file as fast as the computer can read it. Check the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version if an option behaves differently.
This is a starting command, not a universal guarantee. The reviewed FFmpeg documentation does not establish that every container, codec and YouTube ingest configuration works with it.

4. Check the preview, audio and video
Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check that both picture and sound are present and that the stream appears stable before going live. Monitor stream quality during the broadcast, as YouTube recommends. Test the point where the file wraps to its beginning; a successful initial preview does not prove that the boundary is seamless.
5. Plan for the stream’s end
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer continuous broadcast will be archived as one video; plan the session lifecycle and archive handling around that limit. The current instructions are in YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

If stream copy fails or the loop glitches
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg rejects the output or reports a muxing/codec error | The source streams cannot be passed through to the selected output, or the output needs information the source does not contain. | Check the file’s streams and output compatibility. If only container compatibility is the issue, try an offline remux into a suitable container; if the codec or stream itself must change, re-encode or use an encoding workflow. |
| The stream starts, but picture or sound is missing | The file may not contain the expected track, or the copied stream may not be accepted as configured. | Verify the source tracks, inspect FFmpeg’s error output and confirm the Live Control Room preview before starting the public broadcast. |
| The picture or sound glitches when the loop restarts | Stream copy does not promise gapless transitions; the file’s timestamps or boundary may not suit repeated playback. | Test the boundary. If it remains faulty, prepare a compatible file offline or switch to a workflow that decodes and encodes the feed. |
| YouTube does not receive a feed | The server URL or stream key may be wrong, the key may have been reset, or the channel may not yet be enabled for live streaming. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, check channel eligibility and activation, then start FFmpeg again. Reset a key in Studio if it may have been exposed. |
| The preview stutters or drops | The outgoing bitrate may be too close to the available upload capacity, or the connection may be unstable. | Check the connection and leave the 20% upload headroom YouTube recommends above total stream bitrate. |
Other ways to keep prerecorded video live
- StreamNeo — #1 for a cloud-hosted YouTube loop: it keeps uploaded video running from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera. Details: StreamNeo.
- Local FFmpeg: the method above can copy compatible encoded streams and gives you control over the outgoing feed, but the computer and connection must remain available and you must handle compatibility and recovery.
- OBS Studio: YouTube lists OBS as open-source streaming software available at no charge. It is a graphical production option, but placing a video in an ordinary OBS scene should not be assumed to preserve the existing encoded video without re-encoding. See YouTube’s encoder directory.
- Other hosted services: YouTube’s encoder directory describes Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. The directory entry does not establish whether it avoids re-encoding; check its current features, terms and pricing directly before choosing it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube loop without leaving your own computer on, StreamNeo’s setup is: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It keeps the uploaded video running from the cloud, supports the quality you upload up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
