How to Create a 24/7 YouTube Live Loop with FFmpeg on Windows

Use FFmpeg’s input loop and real-time pacing options to stream a video file to YouTube Live from Windows, with practical setup, testing, recovery, and archive guidance.

To loop a video file to YouTube Live from Windows, run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 before the input and -re to read the file at normal playback speed. Then encode it with settings that match the source and YouTube’s current guidance, and send it to the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. This keeps the video repeating while FFmpeg and the computer remain running; it does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast.

What you need before you start

  • A Windows computer with an FFmpeg build installed and available from Command Prompt or PowerShell.
  • A video file you have the rights to stream, including any music, footage, and other included material.
  • Live-stream access for your YouTube channel. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains creating or selecting a stream in Live Control Room.
  • The stream URL and stream key for that stream. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a public screenshot or log, or commit it to a source-code repository.
  • A stable internet connection with upload capacity for the bitrate you choose, plus a plan to monitor the FFmpeg process and stream health.

Create a YouTube stream and get its ingest details

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use.
  2. Find the stream URL and stream key in the stream settings. Keep the key private and use the exact URL YouTube provides; ingest paths can differ.
  3. Use the RTMPS URL when YouTube offers it and your FFmpeg build supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends encrypted delivery in its encoder settings guidance.
  4. Choose the video resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval based on your source and YouTube’s current recommendations. Check the current table in YouTube’s encoder settings guide rather than treating the example command below as a universal preset.

Use FFmpeg to loop and stream the file

Start with this command pattern

In Command Prompt, replace the input path and ingest URL with your own values. Replace <STREAM_KEY> with the private key from Live Control Room. The command is a starting pattern, not a universally tested configuration:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "C:pathtovideo.mp4" -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "rtmps://<YouTube-ingest-host>/<path>/<STREAM_KEY>"

  • -re and -stream_loop -1 are input options, so they appear before -i. FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite input looping and -re as reading at the input’s native frame-rate pace.
  • -c:v libx264 and -c:a aac re-encode the video and audio. The example’s bitrate and keyframe settings must be checked against the resolution, frame rate, source, and YouTube’s current recommendations. In particular, -g 60 means a 60-frame GOP, not a fixed two-second interval for every frame rate.
  • -f flv selects the FLV container commonly used for RTMP-family ingest. Keep the exact RTMPS address supplied for your stream.
  • The command places the stream key in the process command line. Avoid sharing command history, screenshots, logs, or scripts containing it. A Windows batch file can read the key from an environment variable, but environment variables are not a complete security boundary; restrict access to the account and machine that can read it.

Choose between re-encoding and stream copy

Re-encoding gives you control over output codec and bitrate, but uses CPU or other configured encoding resources. Stream-copying can reduce encoding load when the source already has compatible codecs, bitrate, frame rate, and container behavior. It may not meet YouTube’s ingest requirements, and file timestamps, audio/video synchronization, or the transition back to the beginning can cause problems. Do not switch to -c copy without checking the source streams and testing the loop in YouTube’s preview.

Test the stream before making it public

  1. Use a private or unlisted test stream, if appropriate for your channel and stream setup.
  2. Run the command and wait for YouTube’s incoming preview and stream-health indications. Follow the Live Control Room prompts for starting a scheduled or immediate broadcast.
  3. Check picture, audio level, sync, and the transition from the end of the file back to its beginning. Verify playback on the devices your intended audience uses.
  4. Confirm the upload connection can sustain the selected output bitrate. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream quality; a brief successful connection does not establish that the machine or network will stay up continuously.
  5. During operation, monitor the FFmpeg process, YouTube stream health, and audio/video quality. For a genuinely unattended broadcast, arrange a person or alerting system to detect failures.

Plan for reconnects, restarts, and long-stream limits

A looping command is not a recovery plan

-stream_loop -1 repeats the input only while FFmpeg is running. A network interruption, encoder failure, Windows restart, or dropped YouTube ingest can still stop the broadcast. FFmpeg documents a FIFO muxer recovery pattern using options such as -f fifo -fifo_format flv -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1. Adapt and validate it for the FFmpeg build you use: retrying a transient output failure does not guarantee YouTube will accept a reconnected session, and it will not restart a process after a crash. A process supervisor or scheduled task can restart FFmpeg, but test it with your stream configuration and make sure it cannot launch parallel encoders using the same key.

Separate continuous viewing from archives and rewind

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive threshold, not a promise that one continuous 24-hour broadcast will have a complete replay. YouTube also says DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If viewers need a full replay or rewind, plan for those goals separately from keeping a live endpoint running; check the current stream controls and archive behavior before relying on a single long session. See YouTube’s encoder stream guide and DVR guidance.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube never shows an incoming preview Incorrect stream URL or key, unsupported ingest settings, or a connection failure. Copy the current URL and key from the selected Live Control Room stream, confirm RTMPS support in your FFmpeg build, and read FFmpeg’s connection error output. Keep the key private while troubleshooting.
Video stutters or stream health degrades Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable for the chosen bitrate, or encoding cannot keep pace. Test the connection and lower output settings to a level supported by the source, encoder, and actual upload capacity, using YouTube’s current recommendations.
Audio or video breaks at the loop boundary The file’s final frames, timestamps, audio length, or stream-copy compatibility do not join cleanly to the start. Inspect the source and test the boundary in a private or unlisted stream. Try re-encoding if stream copy produces incompatible timing or format behavior.
The stream stops after running for a while FFmpeg exited, Windows or the network disconnected, or YouTube dropped the ingest. Check the process and logs, network status, and YouTube stream health. Test FIFO recovery for transient output errors and separately configure and test process restart behavior.
The live stream is available but the replay is incomplete or rewind is limited Continuous live delivery, archive creation, and DVR rewind have different behavior on long sessions. Use YouTube’s current archive and DVR guidance when planning session length; do not assume a 24-hour session produces a complete replay or full rewind.

Keep rights and YouTube rules in view

Only stream video, music, and other material you have permission to use, and follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. A looping format does not change the rights status of the underlying footage or music. YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips also recommend testing and checking stream quality during a broadcast.
