How to Loop a Video on YouTube Live with FFmpeg on Linux

A practical guide to looping a prerecorded video into YouTube Live from Linux with FFmpeg, including YouTube’s encoder settings, stream-key safety, and cloud alternative.

You can loop a prerecorded video into a YouTube Live stream from Linux by configuring FFmpeg to repeat the input, sending the output to YouTube’s ingest server with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, and keeping the Linux host and network connection running. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies supported formats and streaming settings, but the exact FFmpeg loop option can vary by installed version; check that version’s documentation before using a copy-ready command.

What you need before starting

  • A Linux machine that can remain on, with FFmpeg installed and an upload connection capable of sustaining your chosen bitrate.
  • A video file you have the right to stream. For a documentary, that means checking the rights to the footage, music, narration, and any other included material.
  • A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming and a stream created or selected in YouTube Studio.
  • The stream server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream.

This method runs on the Linux machine where FFmpeg is installed. If that computer sleeps, loses power, or loses its internet connection, the feed can stop.

Get the YouTube ingest details

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into your FFmpeg output configuration. YouTube explains that the key identifies where the encoder sends its feed and allows YouTube to accept it: YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
  3. Keep the key out of public scripts, screenshots, and shell history. If it is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration.

Set the video and audio output

Choose an output protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your installed FFmpeg build supports and that match YouTube’s guidance. YouTube recommends RTMPS and documents RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings. Its currently published guidance also includes H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Check the current table for the row matching your codec, resolution, and frame rate: YouTube Help: Recommended encoder settings.

Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain

For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a promise of picture quality or a measurement of your connection. Use the recommendation for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate, and leave enough upload capacity for a stable feed. If your connection cannot hold the chosen bitrate, reduce the output settings or use a more reliable connection.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check the audio settings

YouTube recommends 128 kbps stereo audio. Confirm the input has the audio you expect and that the selected FFmpeg codecs and output muxer are available in your build. A format listed by YouTube is not automatically supported by every local FFmpeg installation.

Configure FFmpeg to repeat the file

The repeat behavior is configured on the FFmpeg side. The exact loop option and its placement depend on the installed FFmpeg version and how it handles the input format. Consult the manual for the version installed on your Linux system and verify the option against a short test before connecting a public stream. Do not assume a command for one build works unchanged on another.

Once you have confirmed the input-loop syntax, configure the command to read the chosen file repeatedly, encode or mux it to a YouTube-supported ingest format, and send it to the selected server URL with the stream key. Do not paste a real stream key into a command that could be saved in shell history or shared. Use a protected configuration method appropriate to your environment.

Start the stream and monitor it

  1. Start FFmpeg with the verified loop configuration and YouTube output settings.
  2. Open the stream’s preview in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Check that both video and audio appear as expected.
  3. If the stream is configured to require it, press Go live in the Live Control Room. Do not assume every stream starts publishing to viewers as soon as the encoder connects.
  4. Watch stream health and respond to warnings. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring the stream during transmission.
  5. To stop, stop FFmpeg’s transmission and use the Live Control Room’s end action where applicable. Confirm that the live event has ended.

YouTube describes latency as the delay between capture and encoding and what viewers see. Lower latency can increase buffering; for a prerecorded loop without audience interaction, reducing latency may matter less than stable playback. Check the selected stream’s latency, DVR, and auto-start settings in Studio rather than assuming a default: YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

Common problems and fixes

  • YouTube does not receive a feed: Recheck the server URL and stream key against the selected Live Control Room stream. Confirm that FFmpeg’s output protocol and muxer are supported by your build.
  • The video plays only once: Verify that the loop option is valid for your installed FFmpeg version, applies to the input, and is placed correctly. Test with a short file before a full-length stream.
  • Live Control Room shows warnings or unstable health: Check that the connection can sustain the selected bitrate. Use the YouTube recommendation for the selected codec and output dimensions, or lower the settings and test again.
  • Viewers hear no audio or see the wrong picture: Check the source file’s streams and confirm the chosen audio/video encoders and muxer are available in the installed FFmpeg build. Verify the preview before going live.
  • The feed stops unexpectedly: Check whether the Linux host slept, restarted, lost power, or lost network connectivity. A local FFmpeg process depends on that host and its connection staying available.
  • The stream key may have been exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old key in your protected encoder configuration.

Copyright and monetization considerations

Looping a file does not grant permission to broadcast it. Before streaming a documentary, verify the rights for every included element, including licensed footage, music, photographs, and narration. YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies apply to live streams as well as uploaded videos; a stream can be interrupted or a channel’s monetization affected when content violates those policies. Reused-content eligibility is a separate consideration from whether you have permission to use material. Review YouTube’s current policies before making a loop part of a channel’s regular programming.
