If an OBS Media Source is black, start by checking the selected file, the source’s visibility and position in the scene, and whether playback has ended. First see whether the picture appears in the OBS preview; record a short local test before changing YouTube settings. If OBS itself shows the picture but YouTube does not, troubleshoot the output and stream health as a separate problem.
Find where the picture disappears
Compare the same moment at each stage. This narrows down which part of the setup needs attention; it is a troubleshooting method, not proof of a particular cause.
- OBS preview: Does the source appear on the canvas?
- Local recording: Does a short test recording contain the picture and sound?
- YouTube Live Control Room preview: Does YouTube receive the picture?
- Public watch page: Is the stream visible to viewers?
If the preview is already black in OBS, begin with the scene and playback checks below. If the preview and local recording look right but YouTube does not, check the stream configuration, Live Control Room messages and stream health. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health: YouTube live streaming tips.
Check the media file and source properties
Select the Media Source in OBS’s Sources dock and open its properties. Verify that it points to the intended local file. If the file may be the problem, open it outside OBS and confirm that it plays. OBS documents support for video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, but a supported extension alone does not guarantee that a particular file is valid or will decode correctly. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.

- Confirm the selected path is correct and the file is accessible.
- Check that playback has actually started; watch the OBS preview rather than relying only on the source’s presence in the scene.
- For audio-only symptoms, check the file’s audio and OBS audio meters separately from the picture.
Check visibility, stacking and canvas placement
In Sources, make sure the Media Source’s eye icon is enabled. Also check what is above it in the list: OBS composites sources in stacking order, so a visible image, color, browser or other source above the media can cover it. The OBS Project’s Sources Guide explains visibility and source order.
- Toggle the Media Source’s eye off and on to confirm you are checking the intended source.
- Temporarily hide higher sources to see whether one is obscuring the video.
- Check that the source is positioned and sized within the canvas rather than outside the visible frame.
Check whether playback ended or needs to loop
A finite video can finish while the scene remains active. In OBS Media Source properties, the Loop setting defaults off, and Show nothing when playback ends defaults on. Once playback ends, those settings can leave the source empty. OBS documents Restart playback when source becomes active as on by default; that restarts a source when it becomes active, but it is not the same as looping it continuously. Inspect the settings and watch the clip through its end to confirm what happens. See OBS Media Sources.

Choose Media Source or VLC Video
| Option | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One supported local file | Confirm the file path, playback, visibility and Loop setting. Loop defaults off. |
| VLC Video | A playlist or extended media support | Install VLC for the source to appear in OBS. OBS requires 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. Loop Playlist defaults on. |
OBS describes VLC Video as using VLC libraries for extended media support; it requires VLC to be installed. Use it when you need its playlist workflow, not as a universal black-screen fix. For a single supported file, the built-in Media Source is the simpler starting point. Neither option can be declared more reliable for a file and system that have not been tested. Details: OBS Media Sources.
Investigate performance only when symptoms point to it
If the source appears in the preview but the output is choppy, delayed or missing frames, investigate performance separately from a fully black source. OBS scene compositing and rendering use GPU resources. Its performance guidance focuses on cases such as encoding overload or lag and recommends reducing unnecessary scene complexity and using appropriately lower-resolution media when the extra resolution is not needed. A black frame by itself does not establish GPU overload. See OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.

- Reduce unnecessary sources and filters, then test again.
- Use media at a resolution suited to the output when higher resolution is unnecessary.
Use YouTube encoder settings only for an output problem
Bitrate, codec and keyframe settings affect the stream sent to YouTube; they do not repair a Media Source that is already black in OBS. If OBS preview and local recording are correct but YouTube’s preview is not, compare your encoder configuration with YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions. For example, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as a recommended H.264 bitrate at 1080p/30fps and 6 Mbps at 720p/60fps. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not guarantees of reliable operation. Its page also specifies H.264, H.265 or AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR bitrate encoding and a recommended two-second keyframe interval not exceeding four seconds. Match settings to the chosen resolution and frame rate rather than changing them as a guess at a source-level fault.

A 24/7 live stream has separate archive and viewer-rewind limits; neither explains why an OBS source is black. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends making a local archive backup. For a continuous broadcast, arrange local recording and verify that the file is growing instead of relying on the YouTube archive. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Common symptoms and next steps
| What you see | Check next |
|---|---|
| Black in OBS preview and recording | Confirm the file path and playback, then check the eye icon, source stacking and canvas position. |
| Picture appears, then disappears | Watch through the clip’s end; inspect Loop and Show nothing when playback ends. |
| One file works, playlist does not | Consider VLC Video; install VLC and check its architecture matches OBS. |
| OBS preview and local recording are right, YouTube is black | Check encoder configuration, Live Control Room preview and stream health. |
| Picture is choppy, delayed or dropping frames | Follow the OBS performance branch: look for overload or lag, then simplify the scene or use appropriately lower-resolution media. |
