To find and hire a live stream moderator, define the work and boundaries first, then look for someone dependable who understands your community and platform. Explain the schedule, duties, permissions, escalation process, and whether the role is paid or volunteer before they accept. Assess candidates with realistic chat scenarios, assign only the access they need, and give them written rules before their first shift.
Decide what kind of moderation your stream needs
A moderator may enforce rules, welcome viewers, answer routine questions, or do some combination of those tasks. Be specific: “moderate chat” is too vague to tell a candidate what the role involves or what authority they will have.
- Platform and coverage: Name the platform or platforms, streams covered, time zones, expected availability, and how a moderator should signal that they cannot make a shift.
- Chat duties: Say whether the person should focus on removing disruptive content or also engage with viewers and answer questions.
- Authority: List actions the moderator may take independently, such as removing content or timing out a user, and identify situations that require your approval.
- Escalation: Give a contact method and explain when to alert you or a lead moderator—for example, for an ambiguous rule violation, a repeated pattern, or a safety-sensitive concern.
There is no established universal moderator-to-viewer ratio in the sources available for this guide. Staffing needs depend on how quickly chat moves, the kind of community you run, and how much coverage you need.
Write the rules and operating expectations
Prepare concise community rules before recruiting. Include examples of behavior that is prohibited, what moderators should do when a rule is broken, and how they should handle uncertain cases. Set expectations for confidentiality and respectful communication within the moderation team, too.

Share the code of conduct and working expectations with moderators before they begin. AnyKey’s September 2018 guide recommends giving the team the code well in advance. Its recommendations are useful for planning, but they do not establish current pay rates or legal requirements.
Where to find candidates
Start with people who have already shown good judgment and reliability in your community, but do not treat familiarity alone as proof that someone will be a good moderator. Ask interested viewers to apply or recommend candidates, and consider professional recruitment for a paid role or larger production.
A 2023 study by Joseph Seering and Sanjay R. Kairam surveyed 1,053 active adult Twitch moderators in the United States. It found that moderators in larger channels were more likely to have been chosen because they were active participants, while smaller-channel moderators were more likely to have had a prior connection with the streamer. This is evidence about Twitch recruitment patterns in that study—not a universal rule or a guarantee that a particular candidate will succeed.

The available evidence does not establish a current, reputable moderator staffing marketplace or agency. If you recruit outside your community, assess candidates using the same role brief and standards rather than assuming a directory or service has vetted them.

Look for trustworthiness, reliability, clear communication, sound judgment, familiarity with your rules, and willingness to use the platform’s tools responsibly. Twitch describes moderation as a trust-based role and recommends choosing reliable people and communicating the kind of community environment you expect.
Use a structured conversation about hypothetical situations. This is a practical way to discuss judgment, not a validated hiring test. Give each candidate the same examples and ask what they would do, why, and when they would contact you.

- Spam: How would they handle repeated promotional messages? Would one message warrant a different response from persistent spam?
- Harassment: What would they do when a message targets another viewer, and how would they follow the channel’s escalation rules?
- Ambiguous conduct: If a message might break a rule but context is unclear, would they seek clarification or escalate rather than act beyond their authority?
- Fast-moving chat: How would they prioritize a harmful message when several conversations are moving at once?
Listen for answers grounded in your written rules, measured use of authority, and a willingness to ask for help. Reliability matters as much as being quick to act; a moderator should understand when a decision is theirs and when it is yours.
Agree on compensation and privacy before acceptance
State plainly whether the role is paid or volunteer before someone agrees. Do not imply that volunteer work is the default across platforms. AnyKey’s September 2018 guide says larger productions run by revenue-generating companies should consider budgeting for moderator compensation; it also discusses non-cash recognition. It does not provide a current standard rate.

Assign platform access and onboard the moderator
Choose the platform role that matches the work, show the moderator how to use its controls, and explain the limits of their authority. Platform labels and settings can change, so confirm the current controls in the platform’s own help materials.
Twitch
Twitch’s moderation guidance covers adding moderators and using moderation tools. Its documentation describes AutoMod as holding potentially risky messages for moderator review and Shield Mode as a way to activate preset safety settings quickly. These tools can help, but Twitch says automated systems cannot catch everything or be fully accurate; human judgment remains important.

YouTube
YouTube offers standard and managing moderator roles, with more options available to managing moderators. Its live chat guidance says moderators can remove inappropriate content, time a user out, or hide a user from the channel. Moderator status remains in place until the creator removes it, so review access when responsibilities change.
Use YouTube’s instructions for moderating live chat to assign the appropriate role and explain the available controls. Give only the level of access needed for the agreed duties.
First-shift checklist
- Share the written rules, examples, and escalation contacts.
- Review the platform controls the moderator is authorized to use.
- Confirm the coverage schedule, communication channel, and compensation arrangement, if any.
- After an early shift, check in about difficult decisions and clarify any rule that proved ambiguous. This is a practical recommendation; the sources do not prescribe a formal review schedule.
Can automation replace a human moderator?
No. Automation can filter or hold some messages and help a team respond quickly, but it cannot reliably make every context-sensitive decision. Twitch explicitly notes that bots and automated systems cannot catch everything or be 100% accurate. Use automation as support for a human moderation plan, not as a substitute for trusted people and clear escalation rules.
