OBS VLC Video Source vs Media Source: How to Loop a YouTube Playlist

Use Media Source to loop one local file and VLC Video Source to repeat a playlist of local files. A YouTube playlist URL is a separate workflow.

For a single local video, use OBS’s Media Source and turn on Loop. For several local files played in order and repeated as a group, use VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist. That does not mean VLC Video Source is a documented way to play a YouTube playlist URL: OBS documents its VLC playlist as a list of media items, while YouTube’s playlist URL and embed workflow are separate.

Which OBS source should you choose?

Your material Choose Setting
One local audio or video file Media Source Enable Loop to repeat the file when playback finishes.
Several local files to play in sequence and repeat together VLC Video Source Enable Loop Playlist. OBS documentation says it is on by default.
A playlist hosted on YouTube Use YouTube’s playlist or embed workflow where appropriate Do not assume that pasting a standard YouTube playlist page URL into VLC Video Source will work; OBS’s documented VLC workflow is for media items, not a confirmed YouTube playlist player.

The practical distinction is the input: Media Source handles an individual file using OBS’s built-in media handling; VLC Video Source uses VLC libraries and provides playlist controls. OBS lists Media Source support for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Loop one local file with Media Source

  1. In OBS, open the scene where the video should appear. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source.
  2. Create a source or select an existing one, then choose the local media file in its properties.
  3. Enable Loop so playback repeats when the file reaches its end. OBS documents this option as off by default.
  4. Check the other playback options against your scene. Restart playback when source becomes active and Show nothing when playback ends are on by default in OBS’s documentation. Playback speed can be set from 1% (0.01x) to 200% (2x).
  5. Confirm the video and audio in the preview, then test the end of the file to ensure it starts again as intended.

Media Source is the straightforward choice when a single local recording should repeat. It is not the documented multi-file playlist control.

Loop several local files with VLC Video Source

  1. Install VLC on the same computer as OBS. OBS says VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed before it appears in the source list. Match the architectures: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  2. In the OBS scene, use Sources → + → VLC Video Source. If the source is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
  3. In the source properties, add the local files to its playlist in the order you want them to play.
  4. Leave Loop Playlist enabled to repeat the complete list. OBS documents it as on by default. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want a different, shuffled order; its documented default is off.
  5. Review visibility behavior. The documented default is to stop playback when the source is not visible and restart it when visible. If the source must keep playing while hidden, check the available visibility settings in your OBS version and test that behavior in the scene.
  6. Preview the sequence and confirm that playback advances through the list and returns to the beginning after the last item.

VLC Video Source also exposes controls for network caching, audio tracks, and subtitles. OBS documents a 400 ms default for network caching; that is a configuration default, not a performance recommendation. VLC offers extended media support, but the OBS documentation does not establish that it will perform better than Media Source for a given computer or file.

Can OBS play a YouTube playlist through VLC Video Source?

The official documentation reviewed does not establish support for pasting a standard YouTube playlist-page URL into VLC Video Source. OBS describes a VLC playlist of media items. YouTube separately explains how to share a playlist URL and how to embed a playlist in website HTML. Treat these as distinct workflows rather than assuming one is interchangeable with the other.

To share a YouTube playlist, YouTube says to copy the playlist URL and check that it contains “playlist,” so it identifies the playlist rather than only one video. Private videos must be shared with the viewer. For embedded playlists, an item may be unavailable if its uploader disabled embedding, and age-restricted videos cannot be watched on most third-party websites. YouTube’s embed steps are Share → Embed → copy the HTML into website HTML; the YouTube embed guidance says its API Terms of Service and Developer Policies apply to embedded-player use.

What this means for a YouTube livestream

Choosing an OBS source only determines what media OBS plays. It does not configure the YouTube livestream itself. YouTube identifies encoder software as a streaming option and requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days to livestream. Set up the stream and encoder separately, and test the full chain before relying on it live. See YouTube Help for current livestream requirements.

For documentaries or other recorded material, looping a file does not grant permission to broadcast it. Confirm that you have the rights or permission needed for the video and audio, and check YouTube’s rules for the material you plan to stream.

Common problems and practical checks

  • VLC Video Source does not appear: Install VLC, then restart OBS if needed. Ensure VLC and OBS architectures match; OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  • A single file stops at the end: Open Media Source properties and turn on Loop.
  • The multi-file sequence stops after its last item: Check that Loop Playlist is enabled in VLC Video Source properties.
  • The playlist order changes unexpectedly: Check whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled.
  • Playback stops when switching scenes or hiding the source: Check VLC Video Source’s visibility behavior. Its documented default is to stop when not visible and restart when visible.
  • A YouTube playlist item is missing in an embed: Check whether the video is private, embedding is disabled, or the video is age-restricted. These are YouTube playlist/embed limitations, not evidence that OBS’s local VLC playlist is malfunctioning.
  • A YouTube URL does not behave like a local playlist: The documented VLC source workflow is for media items. Use local files for the documented OBS looping workflow, or use YouTube’s embed workflow for a website player.

OBS’s published documentation does not provide a benchmark comparing CPU/GPU use, reliability, or transition smoothness between these two sources. Choose by media arrangement and required controls, not an assumed performance advantage.
