1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo prepare videos for a 24/7 YouTube stream on a Raspberry Pi 4, standardize and check your media library, then configure a live encoder to send a compliant feed to YouTube. A video file alone cannot keep a live stream going: the playlist player, encoder, network, power, cooling and recovery plan all matter. YouTube publishes ingest recommendations, but the available documentation does not certify that a Raspberry Pi 4 can encode a particular prerecorded-video setup continuously. Test your exact hardware, software and playlist before leaving it unattended.
What you need to prepare
- A Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, power supply, cooling appropriate to your installation, and storage for the media and operating system. The Pi 4 has microSD storage, two USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, dual-band Wi-Fi, and a USB-C power input specified at 5 V and 3 A (15 W). Raspberry Pi lists multiple RAM configurations; these specifications do not establish performance for continuous video encoding. See the Raspberry Pi hardware documentation.
- A playlist or playback method that can repeat your chosen videos, and an encoder capable of sending a live feed to YouTube.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, a stable internet connection, and a way to monitor stream health.
- Videos you have permission to broadcast. Review the copyright safety checklist before using material in a live broadcast.
The Pi 4 supports both wired Gigabit Ethernet and dual-band Wi-Fi. Which is more stable depends on your network and installation; there is no cited head-to-head reliability result for this workload. If practical, test the connection you intend to use rather than assuming either one will be reliable enough.
Choose the live output before preparing files
Pick one output resolution and frame rate for the broadcast, then assess whether your upload connection and Pi can sustain it. YouTube’s current live encoder settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps as recommended advanced settings.
| H.264 output | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | Consider when your measured upload capacity is limited or the source material does not benefit from 1080p detail. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | Consider when the source supports the added detail and your connection has sufficient stable upload capacity. |
The figures are YouTube’s current guidance, not a guarantee of picture quality or a tested Pi 4 result. Treat the minimum as a platform floor, not a sensible target for a connection that varies. Test actual upload performance and leave room for network fluctuations. YouTube also says it transcodes an ingested live stream into output formats for viewers; that does not eliminate the need for a stable feed from your encoder.

Audit and standardize the video library
Inspect what you already have
Before converting anything, record each file’s resolution, frame rate, orientation and aspect ratio, video and audio codecs, and whether it has an audio track. Note clips that are variable-frame-rate or interlaced, too. These checks help identify mismatches and likely trouble spots; there is no single official “Raspberry Pi 4 24/7 playlist” file profile.
Choose a representative short section from the library and check that picture, sound and transitions are acceptable. Include clips with different formats, aspect ratios or audio characteristics rather than checking only the easiest file.

Convert only when there is a reason
If files already suit your chosen playback and output setup, avoid repeatedly transcoding them. When standardization is necessary, make a consistent copy before the live run where practical, then inspect a sample for image quality, audio, aspect ratio and transitions. FFmpeg documents media conversion by re-encoding in its documentation. A pre-prepared library can reduce work during the broadcast, but it does not prove the Pi can encode the live output continuously.
Keep the distinction clear: the stored file’s container or codec does not by itself guarantee that the live encoder will emit YouTube-compliant settings. Check the actual outgoing stream configuration, including codec, CBR, keyframe interval and audio. Avoid assuming a particular resolution, FFmpeg build or hardware-encoder path will work without testing the exact combination you plan to run.

Do not apply DASH rules to an RTMP setup
The usual encoder workflow described here uses YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. DASH is a separate delivery protocol with its own requirements: Google’s DASH documentation describes MP4 containing H.264 and AAC, or WebM containing VP8/VP9 with Vorbis/Opus, along with segment and manifest rules. Those DASH-specific details are not a general playlist-preparation checklist for a typical RTMP/RTMPS encoder connection.
Connect the encoder to YouTube Studio
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel if it is not already available. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do this before the planned start.
- Create or schedule a live stream. Use YouTube Studio’s live-stream creation flow and select the stream mode that fits your planned operation. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes connecting an encoder to a YouTube live stream.
- Copy the connection details. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into the encoder. Treat the key as a secret credential: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to the channel.
- Set and verify the outgoing feed. Configure the encoder for your chosen resolution and frame rate, a supported video and audio codec, CBR and the recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). For stereo, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps as recommended advanced audio settings. Labels and available controls depend on the encoder you use.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, check stream-health indicators and messages, and click “Go live” when you are ready. Use the relevant Live Control Room controls to end the stream in the mode you selected.
YouTube recommends running a speed test and a preflight with audio and movement representative of the broadcast. Its guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Follow the encoder settings and testing guidance rather than treating a successful connection alone as proof the full playlist is ready.

Validate the Pi 4 before leaving it unattended
Run the actual playlist, encoder settings, storage and network path on the Pi 4 you intend to use. Include representative audio and motion, let the playlist cross file boundaries, and observe it long enough to catch issues that a brief preview would miss. No documented result establishes a universal 24/7 prerecorded-video recipe or sustained encoding performance for every Pi 4 setup.
- Watch for dropped frames, encoder warnings, stream-health messages and interruptions.
- Check CPU and thermal behavior during sustained operation. Raspberry Pi documents progressive Arm-core throttling as temperatures rise from 80°C, with Arm cores and GPU throttling at 85°C. These are hardware behavior thresholds, not a performance test for streaming. See the Raspberry Pi documentation.
- Check how the player handles playlist boundaries, missing or damaged files, and the end of the playlist. Do not assume seamless looping until you have watched it happen in your own setup.
- Test what happens after an internet interruption and after a restart or power loss. Decide how you will notice a failure and restore the stream.
- Keep the Pi powered and cooled as appropriate for your setup, and check that storage has enough capacity for the library and operating system.
Raspberry Pi’s published streaming examples concern camera streams, not this prerecorded YouTube workload. Its documentation notes that insufficient UDP receive buffers can cause dropped data and visible pauses in a particular network-streaming setup; that observation should not be mistaken for a universal fix for a Pi-to-YouTube playlist. Likewise, reports about V4L2 encoder-option behavior on Pi 4 depend on the software and configuration. The board, operating system, FFmpeg build, encoder path, output settings, cooling, storage and upload conditions can all affect the result.

Plan for stream length and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 channel should therefore have an explicit plan for session length and YouTube’s handling of the broadcast, rather than assuming one uninterrupted stream will produce a single complete archive. Review the current YouTube encoder setup guidance when planning the stream mode and archive workflow.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely checks and response |
|---|---|
| No preview or the stream does not connect | Confirm live streaming is enabled, the correct server URL and stream key are entered, and the encoder is sending a supported format. If the channel was just enabled for the first time, activation can take up to 24 hours. |
| Health warnings, dropped frames or unstable playback | Compare the outgoing bitrate with YouTube’s guidance and your measured upload capacity; check for connection variation, encoder warnings and sustained thermal throttling. Test the wired or Wi-Fi path you actually plan to use. |
| Audio is absent, distorted or out of sync | Check that the playlist files contain the intended audio, that the encoder selects the right audio source and codec, and that sample rate and bitrate match your setup. Test clips with different audio properties before using the full playlist. |
| Stalls or gaps at playlist boundaries | Inspect the transition between the two files, check whether their formats differ, and test the player’s repeat behavior. Standardize problematic files before the live run if needed. |
| The stream stops after a network or power interruption | Test recovery deliberately while monitoring the channel. Verify what the player and encoder do after interruption or reboot, and establish a way to notice and restart a failed broadcast; do not assume automatic recovery unless your chosen setup demonstrates it. |
| The live session and archive do not match expectations | Plan around YouTube’s stated automatic archive condition for streams under 12 hours. Determine how you will handle session duration and archive availability for your chosen broadcast mode. |
