For YouTube Live, “compressing” 1080p means encoding your live camera or screen feed at a bitrate your internet connection can sustain. First measure your upload speed—not your download speed—then choose a frame rate and encoder bitrate that pass a rehearsal. YouTube lists H.264 1080p at 30 fps at 5 Mbps minimum (14 Mbps recommended), and 1080p at 60 fps at 6 Mbps minimum (17 Mbps recommended). If your upload cannot sustain the applicable minimum, a setting change cannot make 1080p reliable; test a lower frame rate or resolution instead.

What upload speed do you need for 1080p YouTube Live?

YouTube’s live encoder figures are bitrate targets for the stream being sent to the platform, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable. For H.264, its current guidance lists these 1080p rates:

Live format YouTube-listed minimum YouTube-recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps, H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps, H.264 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

The figures are from YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026. They describe platform-wide encoder settings, not Indian ISP performance. There is no single upload speed that characterizes “low-speed Indian broadband”; measure the connection you will actually use. YouTube recommends a speed test to learn your upload bitrate. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance

Even a result above the minimum is only a planning input: upload capacity can fluctuate, and YouTube does not state that the listed minimum guarantees an uninterrupted stream. Test under conditions similar to the broadcast, then check stream health during the event.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose a bitrate, codec, and frame rate

Start with the frame rate your content needs

For a mostly static documentary, lecture, or devotional program, test 30 fps before choosing 60 fps. Higher frame rates can suit fast movement, but YouTube’s H.264 guidance lists a higher recommended bitrate for 1080p60 than for 1080p30. When upload capacity is tight, reducing frame rate is a reasonable adjustment to test. The source does not quantify how much visual quality a particular program will lose, so judge it with your own footage.

Select a supported codec without assuming a device can handle it

YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for live encoder settings. Its 1080p guidance for H.265/AV1 is 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended at 30 fps, and 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended at 60 fps. These are platform figures, not proof that a particular computer, encoder, or connection can produce and sustain that format. Use a codec only if your encoder supports it and can encode it reliably; the available guidance does not establish device performance or a guaranteed efficiency gain on your setup. Set constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval

In your encoder’s output or streaming settings, choose constant bitrate (CBR) and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. CBR helps keep the outgoing rate consistent, but it cannot compensate for upload capacity below the selected bitrate.

Use RTMPS when available

YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS for encoder streaming and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Choose RTMPS in the encoder when it is available for the stream configuration.

Set up and rehearse the stream

  1. Measure upload capacity. Run a speed test while connected to the same network and in the same way you intend to stream. Focus on upload, not download. If others or other devices will use the connection during the broadcast, test under representative conditions rather than treating an otherwise idle-network result as proof of stability.
  2. Choose a starting format. Select 1080p30 or 1080p60 based on the content’s motion and the connection’s measured upload performance. For H.264, use YouTube’s listed minimum and recommended figures as planning references; do not treat the minimum as a reliability promise. If the connection cannot sustain the applicable minimum, test a lower frame rate or resolution rather than claiming that 1080p is secure.
  3. Configure the encoder. Set the supported codec, chosen resolution and frame rate, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS if available. Copy the stream key from YouTube Studio into the encoder’s stream settings. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
  4. Run a representative test before going live. Include audio and movement similar to the planned program. A static screen may not represent a segment with motion, and a quiet test may not reveal audio problems. YouTube says to test before starting a live stream.
  5. Watch stream health and messages. During the rehearsal and broadcast, monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicator and any messages in the live control room. If the stream is unstable, lower the outgoing bitrate or test a lower frame rate or resolution, then rehearse again before relying on the new setting.

Do not use prerecorded upload settings for a live stream

YouTube’s separate prerecorded-video upload guidance recommends 8 Mbps for standard-frame-rate 1080p uploads and 12 Mbps for high-frame-rate 1080p uploads. Those figures concern uploading a finished video, not live ingestion; do not substitute them for the live encoder settings above. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings

Troubleshooting slow or unstable 1080p streams

  • The stream drops frames or YouTube reports poor health: The selected bitrate may exceed what the connection can sustain consistently. Retest upload performance under realistic conditions, lower the encoder bitrate, and consider testing 30 fps or a lower resolution. Rehearse the revised settings.
  • A speed test looks adequate but the broadcast still struggles: A single test is not proof of sustained capacity. Repeat a representative rehearsal, including the planned audio and motion, and check YouTube’s health messages. The official guidance does not prescribe a universal safety margin, so do not assume one fixed percentage will work for every connection.
  • The encoder cannot select your preferred codec: Codec availability depends on the encoder and device. Use a codec the encoder actually supports; YouTube’s platform table does not establish compatibility or performance for a specific setup.
  • The stream does not connect: Check that the stream key was copied correctly and that the selected transport is supported by your encoder. Use RTMPS when available, and keep the key private.
  • The rehearsal is smooth but the real program is not: Compare the test with the broadcast conditions. Include similar movement and audio, and account for other network use that will occur during the program. Watch stream health and messages while live.

Copyright and live-stream eligibility

Technical settings do not grant rights to the material you broadcast. Before streaming a film, documentary, music, or other third-party content, confirm that you have the necessary rights and that the content complies with YouTube’s policies. A successful connection or rehearsal is not approval of the content or a guarantee of monetization.
