If FFmpeg repeats the first clip instead of moving through your YouTube rotation, check where -stream_loop -1 appears. It is an input option: FFmpeg applies it to the next input, so placing it before an individual clip can loop that clip rather than the concat playlist. That is a likely configuration cause, not a confirmed diagnosis without your command and logs.
Check whether FFmpeg loops or restarts
First distinguish two different symptoms:
- FFmpeg stays running and returns to the first item: investigate the input loop option and the playlist contents.
- FFmpeg exits, then starts again: investigate the script, service, container policy, or scheduler that launches it. That is separate from FFmpeg looping an input.
The symptom alone does not establish which is happening. Watch the process and inspect its logs while the rotation reaches the point where it appears to start over.
Put the loop option before the concat-list input
FFmpeg options normally apply to the next specified file, and -stream_loop is an input option. The documentation defines -1 as looping indefinitely. If the next input after the option is one video file, that file may repeat; for a rotation, the option generally belongs immediately before the concat playlist input. ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt ... OUTPUTThis illustrates option placement, not a complete or tested command for your system. Keep the concat format and list together as one input, then adapt encoding, output, and safety settings to your files and destination.

Verify the concat playlist
The concat demuxer reads a text script of files and directives in sequence, presenting their packets as though they had been muxed together. It adjusts timestamps so each subsequent file starts after the previous one. FFmpeg documents the demuxer and its constraints in the formats documentation.
- Open the exact list file named after
-iand confirm it includes every intended clip in the expected order. - Check every
fileline and make sure paths resolve from the working directory of the process, which may differ from your interactive shell’s directory. - Check that the playlist is not being regenerated, truncated, or replaced by an automation job while FFmpeg runs.
- Remember that the concat demuxer’s safe-path check is enabled by default. Use
-safe 0only when needed for paths the default check rejects, and only when you trust the list: it permits any filename.
Check file compatibility and join problems
The concat demuxer expects files to have the same streams, including codecs and time base. Incorrect duration information can cause artifacts. If FFmpeg reaches later clips but glitches, stalls, or fails at joins, inspect the stream layouts and duration metadata rather than treating it as a simple loop-placement problem.

When inputs cannot be concatenated under the demuxer’s requirements, the concat filter may be appropriate, but it requires re-encoding in the usual workflow. FFmpeg’s FAQ explains the distinction: the demuxer can avoid re-encoding when inputs are compatible, while the filter is for cases where re-encoding is needed.
A practical diagnostic order
- Read the full command and identify the input immediately following
-stream_loop -1. - Confirm that this input is the concat list, specified with
-f concatand the intended list file, rather than a single clip. - Confirm the process remains alive or exits. If it exits and is relaunched, trace the external restart mechanism separately.
- If later clips play but transitions fail, check matching streams, codecs, time bases, and duration information; consider a concat filter with re-encoding if the files are incompatible.
- If an automation system manages the list, inspect how and when it writes the playlist.
