Short answer: there is no universal way to make a YouTube stream recover automatically from every Contabo VPS network outage. First restore the VPS network path; then confirm the encoder reconnects to YouTube and the event is receiving video. To reduce interruption next time, configure and test recovery for your specific server and encoder, and test YouTube’s backup-encoder rollover guidance separately.
Why a VPS outage and a YouTube stream need separate recovery
A YouTube broadcast depends on several links: the VPS must be reachable, its network interface and routes must work, the encoder process must be running, and that encoder must be sending to the correct YouTube ingest URL with a valid stream key. A failure at any point can interrupt the feed. A powered-on VPS is not proof that its network or encoder is healthy.
The operating system, encoder, VPS configuration, and specific incident determine what can be automated. Contabo and YouTube do not guarantee that a single encoder on one VPS will resume seamlessly after a provider-side network failure. Build and test recovery for your setup rather than relying on a generic reconnect script.
Diagnose the failure before changing the VPS
1. Check for a Contabo incident
Check Contabo Service Status for a reported incident or maintenance affecting the service or data center. If there is a relevant notice, monitor its updates before repeatedly changing server settings.

2. Rule out your own network path
Try connecting to the VPS from another network, such as a mobile connection. Check whether a VPN, corporate firewall, local connectivity problem, DNS issue, or blocked port explains the failure. If DNS may be involved, test the server’s IP address directly as well as its hostname. A successful test from a second network does not prove the VPS is fully healthy, but it helps separate a local access problem from a server-side one.
3. Check server state and use console access
Check the VPS in the Contabo Customer Panel. If ordinary SSH or application access fails, use the documented VNC console access for VPS/VDS systems to inspect the machine. If the console works while SSH or the encoder endpoint does not, investigate the interface, firewall rules, ports, and network configuration before concluding that Contabo has a wider outage. 4. Inspect the route and interface
From console access, confirm that the network interface is up and compare the server IP address, subnet, gateway, and routes with the values shown in the Customer Panel. If the route itself appears suspect, collect traceroute or MTR results and provide them to Contabo support when requested. A missing response from an intermediate traceroute hop alone does not prove packet loss; some routers do not respond to those probes.
5. Restart only when the evidence supports it
If the operating system remains accessible, prefer an orderly restart through the OS when a restart is appropriate. Contabo lists restarting as a possible recovery step, but a panel power-off stops the system abruptly and should be a last resort. If normal access remains unavailable, follow Contabo’s documented panel or rescue options for the failure you observed rather than repeatedly power-cycling the server.

Restore and verify the YouTube feed
- Confirm the VPS network is back. Check that you can reach the server over the path your encoder uses and that its interface, routes, firewall, and required ports are working.
- Check the encoder process. Confirm that the service or application responsible for sending video is running and that it has reconnected after network access returned. The exact commands and restart policy depend on your operating system and encoder; they are not established for an unspecified VPS setup.
- Verify the YouTube destination and key. In YouTube Studio, open the relevant live event in Live Control Room and check its stream settings. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover the stream URL and key. If the encoder reports a key-related startup error, YouTube advises refreshing the key in Live Control Room and updating it in the encoder. A key refresh will not repair a VPS network outage.
- Wait for video and confirm status. Check that the encoder is sending and that the event preview or status in Live Control Room reflects incoming video before treating the stream as recovered. The encoder reconnecting to its own process is not enough if YouTube is not receiving the feed.
OBS’s official stream connection troubleshooting guide treats dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as evidence of a network issue between the encoder and the remote ingest server. That points to the path to investigate; it does not by itself establish that OBS caused the problem.
Make recovery more resilient before the next broadcast
Automate only what you can observe and test
A restart policy or watchdog can help with an encoder process that exits, but it cannot restore an unavailable provider network or fix an incorrect route, firewall rule, or stream key. Decide what condition your monitoring checks, what action it takes, and how you will know whether that action worked. Test the behavior on your actual server and encoder before depending on it during a broadcast.

Test YouTube backup-encoder rollover
YouTube recommends testing a backup encoder by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then verifying that the player rolls over. This is a planned failover test, not a promise that a backup encoder on the same inaccessible VPS—or any single-VPS setup—will recover automatically from a Contabo network outage. Review YouTube’s live streaming tips and test the topology you actually intend to use.
Keep a recording, but distinguish it from live continuity
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. A recording can preserve the content, but it cannot bring the live feed back while the VPS or encoder is offline. See YouTube’s archive guidance for the platform’s conditions.
