A continuous FFmpeg process is not a guarantee of uninterrupted broadcasting: the host, network, media, encoder and YouTube event all need to keep working.
Before you start
This method is for a prerecorded file on a Debian machine. It sends that file repeatedly as a YouTube Live feed; it does not create a camera-based broadcast. You need a YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, a video file FFmpeg can read, a reliable upload connection and a Debian host that can remain on for the intended broadcast.
- Use the server URL and stream key supplied for your stream in YouTube Studio; do not assume an endpoint from an example is right for your account.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes it as similar to a password and address. Do not put it in a public repository, screenshots, shared transcripts or logs.
- Test with representative picture movement and audio before relying on the stream. YouTube specifically advises testing before going live.

Create the YouTube live stream and protect its key
-
Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream, then copy the server URL and stream key shown for it.
-
Use RTMPS when the Studio settings provide it. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the stream in transit to YouTube.
-
Handle the key as a secret. Avoid putting the real key directly in a command that will remain in shell history. For unattended use, put secrets in appropriately permission-restricted configuration or service environment handling; make sure the secret does not end up in readable logs.

Choose compatible video, audio and bitrate settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. For a broadly compatible prerecorded-file setup, H.264 video and AAC audio are a sensible starting point.
| Output target | YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended | Useful when available upload capacity or encoding resources are limited, though the visual result depends on the source and its motion. |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended | For the 14 Mbps recommendation, allow about 16.8 Mbps sustained upload capacity if following YouTube’s 20% headroom guidance. |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps recommended | Requires more upload bandwidth than 1080p30; check the host’s sustained capacity before choosing it. |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps recommended | Confirm the source, encoder and route can sustain the higher rate. |
These are YouTube’s H.264 ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee of picture quality for every source or connection. Its stereo audio guidance is 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz, and its SDR color guidance is Rec. 709. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings before configuring a different resolution, frame rate or codec.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYouTube also recommends leaving 20% upload headroom beyond the stream bitrate. Its advice is based on total outgoing bitrate, not a speed-test download result. For example, 14 Mbps Ă— 1.2 = 16.8 Mbps: that is the approximate sustained upload capacity needed to carry a 14 Mbps stream with 20% headroom. Measure from the Debian host and network route that will actually broadcast, and account for other devices and services using the connection. YouTube explains this in its streaming tips.

Publish a looping file with FFmpeg
This is an illustrative starting command for an MP4 containing both video and audio. It has not been tested against your particular Debian build or media file. Replace the file path and RTMPS destination with the values for your setup, and do not publish a real key in copied commands or logs.
ffmpeg -hide_banner -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 8000k -maxrate 8000k -bufsize 16000k
-r 30 -g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com/live2/STREAM_KEY'
The example uses 8 Mbps video, which is YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 720p30—not its recommendation for 1080p30. For 720p30, choose a video bitrate within YouTube’s 3–8 Mbps guidance; for 1080p30, choose within its 5–14 Mbps guidance, subject to sustainable upload capacity and headroom. The sample’s -g 60 means a 60-frame GOP: it corresponds to two seconds only when the output is exactly 30 fps. If you change frame rate, set the GOP accordingly.
What the important options do
-rereads a file at its native rate instead of sending it as fast as the machine can process it. It is for file input; do not add file pacing blindly to a live camera or already-live source.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. Put it before that input’s-i.-c:v libx264encodes video as H.264. Encoding uses CPU;-preset veryfasttrades some compression efficiency for lower encoding work.-b:vsets the target video bitrate.-maxrateand-bufsizeconstrain rate variation; the example uses a buffer twice the target bitrate.-r 30sets output frame rate to 30 fps, and-g 60sets the GOP to 60 frames.-pix_fmt yuv420pselects a widely compatible pixel format for this H.264 example.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100encodes stereo audio as AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz, in line with YouTube’s stereo audio guidance.-f flvselects the conventional output container for RTMP-family publishing.
The sample destination illustrates an RTMPS address format only. Use the actual server URL in YouTube Studio, which can vary with stream and account options. Debian’s FFmpeg documentation demonstrates RTMP publishing with file pacing; the complete loop-and-encode command above is an applied recipe, not an official YouTube command. See the Debian FFmpeg documentation.

Adjust the command to your media
- Existing H.264/AAC file: Stream-copying with
-c:v copy -c:a copymay reduce CPU use. It can fail or behave incorrectly if the file’s codecs, stream layout or timestamps do not suit the destination and FLV muxer. Test the exact file and installed FFmpeg build before unattended use. - File without audio: The example assumes an audio stream. Inspect the input and deliberately map available streams or generate audio if needed; do not assume an audio stream exists.
- Multiple-file playlist: A concat demuxer or list introduces boundary and timestamp-continuity concerns. Test transitions and the resulting stream before leaving it unattended.
- Different resolution or frame rate: Set encoding, bitrate, frame rate and GOP to a compatible combination. Do not select a bitrate solely because the source has a particular resolution; the connection must sustain the total outgoing bitrate.
Test the stream before leaving it running
- Start with a representative segment that includes the most demanding picture motion and the audio conditions expected in the full program.
- Check FFmpeg’s output for input, encoder or connection errors, then inspect the preview and stream-health indicators in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Confirm the picture, audio, resolution and frame rate are as intended. Watch for dropped frames, unstable ingest or audio problems rather than assuming that a successful connection means a healthy stream.
- Verify whether the event starts automatically or requires the Live Control Room’s “Go live” action.
- Test a loop boundary and, for a playlist, every transition that could reveal a timestamp or format mismatch.
Keep a long-running setup operational
For 24/7 operation, FFmpeg needs a stable host and a process supervisor or service manager configured to restart it after a process exit. Keep logs and alerts for process failures, and monitor network availability, disk space and source-file access. Check YouTube’s stream health as well: restarting a process cannot fix a bad key, missing or corrupt input, incompatible media, insufficient bandwidth or an event that still needs a manual action.
A Debian machine at home must remain powered and connected. If you use a VPS instead, verify sustained outbound bandwidth, egress charges, provider policy, server region and total cost with the provider; those details depend on the host and plan. A local restart policy or remote server can reduce some operational burdens, but neither removes the need to supervise the actual YouTube feed.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one indefinitely long event will be archived, nor does the threshold mean longer streams cannot exist. If you need an always-on channel, plan event transitions or restarts and review current YouTube event and archive behavior before publishing. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and live stream management guidance.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Wrong server URL or key, network blockage, or an FFmpeg connection error | Copy the current values from Live Control Room, confirm the RTMPS endpoint, inspect FFmpeg’s error output and confirm the host can reach the service. Reset and replace an exposed key. |
| The event has a preview but is not public | The stream’s workflow may require a manual start | Check Live Control Room for the scheduled event and its “Go live” action; feed delivery alone does not guarantee auto-start for every configuration. |
| Stream health is poor or frames drop | Upload capacity is below the total bitrate, the route is unstable, or shared traffic consumes headroom | Measure sustained upload from the Debian host, reduce bitrate or output demands, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. |
| FFmpeg exits immediately or reports missing streams | Bad path, unreadable file, missing audio, unsupported media or incompatible stream mapping | Confirm the file exists and is readable, inspect its streams, and modify mapping or encoding deliberately; test the exact input again. |
| Loop or playlist transition glitches | Timestamp discontinuity or incompatible media at the boundary | Test repeat and playlist boundaries; normalize or re-encode incompatible files and verify timestamp continuity before unattended use. |
| CPU stays saturated | Software re-encoding is too demanding for the host | Try a faster x264 preset, a lower output target, or stream-copy only when the existing streams are compatible; validate output and health afterward. |
| Stream stops after a process or host failure | No supervisor, loss of power/network, or an underlying issue that restart cannot resolve | Use a restart policy and alerts, ensure the host and source remain available, and inspect the actual FFmpeg and YouTube errors before retrying. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously looping prerecorded YouTube stream without keeping Debian hardware at home, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the service loops uploaded video from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos streaming to YouTube, not a camera feed. See StreamNeo or start your free first day.
