Beatrice Gibson’s At Night is her 2026 feature debut: a 16mm film following six women through Paris over a single night. Its festival descriptions connect their stories to sex, motherhood, creativity, aging and freedom, moving between lived experience, fiction and dream. “Domestic, Chaotic Work” is not a verified subtitle or description of At Night; the domestic-dreaming interview with Gibson that may prompt that phrase concerns her separate 2022 film Dreaming Alcestis.
What is At Night about?
The film follows six women as their paths and conversations unfold in Paris after dark. The British Council’s synopsis includes a filmmaker trying to understand the film she is making, a Black single mother, a former sex worker reflecting on her past, and a poet who gives up trying for a child. Film at Lincoln Center also describes sex workers, poets and single mothers among the characters. Rather than present one linear account, the film brings together distinct experiences in a collective portrait.
The descriptions emphasize the instability between reality and invention. The British Council says the film intertwines dream, fiction and reality; Film at Lincoln Center calls it a shapeshifting meditation on mind and body. IDFA frames the night as a space of intimacy and uncertainty, while noting that it does not simply belong to women. These are festival interpretations, not verified statements of Gibson’s own declared thesis. British Council; Film at Lincoln Center; IDFA.
Who inspired the film?
Festival and institutional descriptions connect At Night to avant-garde writers. The British Council names Alice Notley, June Jordan, Kathy Acker and Bernadette Mayer as literary inspirations; Film at Lincoln Center and the BFI also single out Notley and other avant-garde writers. These are reported influences, not evidence that the film adapts a particular book.

The BFI describes the film’s concerns as desire, creativity, motherhood, sexuality and identity. The British Council credits Gibson as writer and director, Ben Rivers as director of photography, Liyo Gong as editor, and Scott O’Donnell, Denna Cartamkhoob and Gibson as producers. It lists Somesuch and Norte as production partners and BBC Film as a supporter. BFI; British Council.
What does “domestic, chaotic work” have to do with Gibson?
The domestic-dreaming interview behind this angle is about Dreaming Alcestis, Gibson’s 2022 film co-directed with Nick Gordon—not At Night. Rochelle Roberts’s interview describes the earlier work as wordless and dream-structured, conceived during the pandemic around confinement in a domestic environment. It discusses associative editing and sound-led approaches to dreams, as well as a move to Palermo and instability during the film’s making. Those details belong to that film’s context; they should not be transferred to Gibson’s Paris-set feature.

In the 2022 interview, Gibson said, “Even though dream space represents the deepest depths of the self, it’s at the same time, universal,” and described her interest in dream space as political as well as aesthetic. She also said, “I make films because I’m trying to work things out, I’m trying to discover meaning through making them, in relation to my own life. I don’t have an argument I want to put forward. I work things out in the process of making them.” These remarks concern her practice and discussion of Dreaming Alcestis; they are not comments specifically about At Night.
