Start by recording YouTube’s exact stream-health error and timestamp, then compare them with your encoder logs. Verify the stream URL, RTMPS support, VPS status, firewall direction and media settings—in that order—before changing ports or restarting services.
Capture the error before changing settings
In YouTube Live Control Room, note the precise error beside the stream-health indicator and its timestamp. Record whether the preview receives data, when the encoder log reports a disconnect, and whether the encoder process is still running. YouTube distinguishes critical errors, which may stop an event from starting or affect viewers, from moderate errors that can degrade quality. YouTube’s live-streaming error guidance explains how these messages appear.
Do not infer the root cause from “encoder disconnected” alone. The same symptom can arise at different points in the path from encoder to YouTube. Change one relevant setting at a time and compare the result with the next error timestamp.
Verify the YouTube destination and RTMPS settings
- Copy the current stream URL and key. Get both from YouTube Live Control Room rather than relying on a saved address that may be outdated. Enter the URL and stream key in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the key as a password: do not share it, include it in screenshots, or leave it visible in logs.
- Check the protocol and server address. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP. Confirm the URL begins with
rtmpsand matches the server address shown in Live Control Room. Also confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance. - Use the displayed error to choose the next check. For an SSL error, verify the RTMPS URL and server address. If they look correct but the SSL error remains, YouTube advises trying port 443 in the URL or encoder port setting. For a connection timeout, verify the URL and RTMPS support before changing firewall rules.
A stream key is a credential, not a troubleshooting detail to publish. When asking for help, redact it while retaining the URL’s protocol and port.

Check the Contabo VPS and the route out to YouTube
Confirm the VPS is available
Check the VPS running status in the Contabo Customer Panel and look for a provider incident on Contabo’s status page. If ordinary access to the server fails, try VNC if available. Contabo notes that when VNC works but other connection methods do not, firewall configuration, incorrect ports or network misconfiguration may be involved. Compare access from another device or network where practical to distinguish a local access issue from a server-side one.
Distinguish Contabo’s network firewall from the operating-system firewall
The Contabo network firewall and the firewall inside your VPS are separate controls. Contabo says its network firewall, when assigned to a VPS/VDS, blocks inbound traffic by default but does not restrict outbound traffic; operating-system firewall rules can govern inbound and outbound connections. The encoder on a VPS sends data outward to YouTube, so inspect outbound rules in the operating-system firewall and confirm the destination protocol and port selected in YouTube and the encoder. Opening inbound RTMP port 1935 is not a general fix for a VPS encoder’s outbound connection. First establish which protocol and port the encoder is actually using; then check whether that outbound connection is allowed.
Measure before blaming bandwidth
Contabo publishes VPS/VDS port-speed ranges from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps, but those product ranges do not establish an individual VPS’s sustained egress throughput or the quality of its route to YouTube. If the VPS is running and the destination is correct but the stream still drops, collect measured outbound performance, packet loss and connection timing before attributing the problem to provider capacity. Match encoder output to YouTube’s recommendations
Once the connection path is reachable, check the output format and bitrate against the recommendations for your codec, resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR) encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its complete tables and setup notes are in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance.
Bitrate recommendations vary by codec and output mode. For H.264, YouTube lists 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS has that much spare outbound capacity. Select the row for your actual codec, resolution and frame rate rather than copying a bitrate intended for a different output.

If YouTube reports an “incorrect stream format,” its error guidance points to a format outside the applicable requirements—for example, video other than H.264 or audio other than AAC for that configuration—or to incorrect video settings. Use the exact error to target a change instead of altering codec, bitrate and other settings all at once. Test before an event using similar audio and motion, then monitor stream health while live.

- YouTube’s exact health message and timestamp, plus whether the preview received data.
- Encoder logs around the failure, and whether the encoder process remained running.
- Encoder and operating-system versions; the configured protocol and port, with the stream key redacted.
- Relevant operating-system firewall rules and VPS status or incident evidence.
- Measured egress performance, packet loss and connection timing, if available.
Ask Contabo to investigate host or network availability when provider-side checks indicate a VPS issue. Consult the encoder’s documentation when its RTMPS support, configuration or logs point to the software. Never send or publish your stream key.
