To rotate videos without restarting your YouTube broadcast, keep OBS connected to YouTube and let an OBS VLC Video Source play a prepared playlist. The encoder connection stays up while the source advances from one video to the next. Turn on Loop Playlist if you want the list to repeat after its final item.
How video rotation works without a broadcast restart
YouTube receives a continuous feed from your encoder; OBS supplies the video content in that feed. With a playlist in OBS, the source moves through its queued files while the encoder continues sending to YouTube. You do not need to stop the broadcast to advance to the next queued video.
This setup supports playlist playback and looping, but it does not guarantee gapless transitions or uninterrupted playback in every system and file combination. The official documentation also does not establish that changing a playlist during playback is risk-free. Prepare the list before going live, and test any live-editing procedure on a controlled stream first.
Set up a playlist in OBS
1. Install VLC with the matching architecture
OBS’s VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed. Match its architecture to OBS: if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. If the source is missing from OBS, check that VLC is installed and that the architectures match.

2. Add a VLC Video Source and load your files
- Open the OBS scene that will carry the stream.
- Add a VLC Video Source to that scene. OBS distinguishes this from a standard Media Source: the VLC source can play a playlist of items.
- Add the video files in the order you want them to play. Check the list and files before going live; the reviewed documentation does not promise seamless transitions or safe playlist changes during playback.
3. Choose looping or one-pass playback
Enable Loop Playlist if you want OBS to start the list again after the last file finishes. Leave looping off if the playlist should play once. OBS also documents a shuffle option; the default is ordered playback. Choose the behavior that fits your program rather than assuming the source will repeat or randomize on its own.
Connect OBS to YouTube and go live
- In YouTube Live Control Room, get the server URL and stream key for your encoder connection.
- Enter those details in OBS’s stream settings and connect the encoder. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not show it in screenshots or share it publicly.
- Preview the video and check the audio before going live. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring the stream’s audio and video quality while it runs.
- Once live, let the VLC playlist advance through its items. Keep OBS running and connected; stopping the broadcast is not the routine way to move to the next queued video.
What to check before relying on an always-on playlist
- Files: Test the actual media files in the intended playlist. Playback can depend on the files and formats, installed OBS and VLC versions, computer resources, and network conditions.
- Playback order: Confirm the ordered or shuffled behavior and whether the playlist should loop.
- Audio and video: Preview before going live, then monitor both as YouTube recommends.
- Live changes: If you need to add, remove, or reorder items while streaming, test that exact edit in a controlled stream. The official sources do not specify how live playlist edits behave.
- Stream duration: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archiving rule, not a guarantee or permission for a 24/7 event.
Troubleshooting
VLC Video Source is not available
Install VLC and confirm its architecture matches OBS. OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

The playlist stops after its last item
Enable Loop Playlist in the VLC Video Source if you want playback to return to the beginning after the final file.
The next video does not appear as expected
Check the playlist order, the selected loop or shuffle behavior, and whether the files play in the source before going live. Test the actual files and system together; the documented feature does not promise gapless transitions for every combination.

The stream disconnects or quality changes
Check the encoder connection and network, then monitor audio and video in YouTube’s live interface. The documented playlist feature does not guarantee that the stream will remain uninterrupted under every system or network condition.
You need to change the playlist while live
Do not assume an edit will be seamless. Try the exact change in a controlled stream before relying on it during a broadcast.
