To become a VTuber on YouTube, choose a 2D Live2D or compatible 3D avatar, set up tracking software for that model, combine the avatar with your voice and content in a streaming encoder, then enable and test YouTube Live. You do not need to buy a camera or microphone before you start: first check whether your existing devices meet your needs.
Choose an avatar format and matching tracking software
Your model format determines which tracking software can use it. Decide between a 2D Live2D Cubism model and a 3D model such as VRoid/VRM before following a setup guide.

VTube Studio’s setup guide recommends calibrating with your face at a normal distance and a neutral expression. Its steps depend on the tracking device. Tracking results can vary with the device, lighting and model; no single webcam or phone result is guaranteed. See the VTube Studio manual and getting-started guide.
Set up your voice, avatar and stream layout
For a stream that shows an avatar alongside gameplay, a screen, overlays or external audio/video equipment, use an encoder workflow. YouTube identifies encoder streaming as suitable for sharing a screen or gameplay and managing external audio and video hardware.

- Check your equipment. YouTube lists microphones, webcams and headsets among typical hardware for gaming and casual streams. You can begin by testing devices you already have; a dedicated microphone is optional, not a prerequisite.
- Open your tracking software. Import your model, select your webcam or phone tracking method, then calibrate with your face at a normal distance and a neutral expression. For a 3D model, use a tracker that supports its format.
- Build a scene in your encoder. Add the tracked avatar and the gameplay, screen or other content you want viewers to see. Select the audio inputs you intend to use and check that your voice is audible alongside any game or desktop sound.
- Keep your stream key private. YouTube’s stream key is the credential used by the encoder to send a feed to your channel. Do not share it or show it on stream.

Enable YouTube Live and configure the encoder
Before planning a debut, check channel eligibility and activate live streaming early. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; streamers must be at least 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.

- Verify your channel and check its status. Confirm the channel meets YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements and has no applicable restriction.
- Activate live streaming ahead of time. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation rather than waiting until the event.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Set its title and visibility, then open Live Control Room.
- Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key as a password; use YouTube’s own stream setup instructions if you need to create or retrieve one.
- Start sending the encoder feed. Wait for the preview in Live Control Room, check stream health, then start the broadcast when ready.

Rehearse before your first public stream
YouTube recommends testing before an event and checking audio and video under conditions similar to the planned stream. Use the Live Control Room preview to confirm your avatar moves, your voice is clear, the intended content is visible and the stream health looks acceptable. Setting visibility to unlisted is a practical way to rehearse without making the test public.

- Speak at your usual streaming volume and listen for clipping, low levels or competing game audio.
- Move naturally and confirm the tracker follows your face as expected.
- Check that overlays and content do not cover important parts of the avatar or screen.
- Preview the stream from a viewer’s perspective, not only inside the encoder.
Protect your channel and content
Use content you have the right to broadcast, including music, gameplay footage and other media. YouTube’s live-streaming rules and enforcement can change, so review the current platform guidance before using material you did not create or license. Do not assume that crediting an owner or using a short excerpt automatically grants permission. For reused content, make the stream meaningfully your own with original commentary or presentation; eligibility and monetization decisions remain subject to YouTube’s policies.
Troubleshoot common first-stream problems
