As of the latest substantial reporting, published by The Philadelphia Inquirer on June 14, 2026, Joey “Skinny Joey” Merlino is publicly active in the Philadelphia-area food and media scene. He is associated with Skinny Joey’s cheesesteak business and co-hosts the video podcast The Skinny with Joe “Lil Snuff” Perri Jr. The report says Merlino completed federal supervision in 2021. It does not establish his precise current residence or verify that he holds a present-day leadership role in organized crime.
What Joey Merlino is doing now
The clearest recent account of Merlino’s public life comes from The Philadelphia Inquirer’s June 14, 2026 feature. It describes him as a local food-business figure and podcast host, rather than documenting a current criminal role.
Skinny Joey’s cheesesteak business
The Inquirer reports that the first Skinny Joey’s shop opened in March 2025 at 3020 South Broad Street, near Philadelphia’s sports complex. It also reports a location on the Wildwood boardwalk, whose menu included pizza and stromboli. The paper said a Boothwyn location was expected around September 1, 2026; that was a reported plan, not confirmation that the shop opened.
The Skinny podcast
Merlino and Perri launched their video podcast, The Skinny, in 2023. According to the Inquirer, it began on YouTube and later focused more on Patreon. Its topics include food, sports betting, accounts of Merlino’s past and interviews.

What is established about his legal history
Merlino’s record includes convictions as well as acquittals. They should not be collapsed into a blanket description of guilt for every crime alleged against him. The Inquirer’s 2026 account reports the following major outcomes:
- 1987 robbery and 1990 conviction: The paper says Merlino was convicted for his role in a 1987 armored-truck robbery involving $352,000.
- 2001 racketeering trial: He and six co-defendants faced federal racketeering charges that included three murder counts and two attempted-murder counts. The Inquirer reports that Merlino was acquitted of those murder and attempted-murder counts but served about 12 years on other charges, including gambling and extortion.
- Separate murder trial: The Inquirer says a 2004 trial acquitted him of the 1996 killing of Joseph Sodano.
- 2018 case: After a mistrial in a later racketeering case, the Inquirer reports that Merlino pleaded guilty to one illegal-gambling charge.
- Supervision: The Inquirer says he completed federal supervision in 2021.
Why the 2014 revocation order was vacated
A separate dispute over an alleged violation of supervised release ended on a jurisdictional issue. In its May 2, 2014 opinion, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit concluded that the district court lacked subject-matter jurisdiction because the summons was issued after Merlino’s supervision term had expired. The appellate court vacated the revocation order and the additional four-month prison term. That ruling concerned the court’s authority over that revocation; it did not erase his separate convictions.

Is Joey Merlino still a mob boss?
The sources available here do not establish a current organized-crime rank or show that Merlino presently runs the Philadelphia mob. Recent coverage uses historical or reputed-figure framing, while documenting food and media activity. Calling him a current mob boss as a verified fact would go beyond what those sources demonstrate.
In a discussion of direct-to-audience media, organized-crime reporter and Rowan University instructor George Anastasia told the Inquirer: “What the internet has provided is: Here are these guys in their own words. Are they being genuine? I don’t know. You can say that about any personality. But here’s a look at them without any filter.” The observation is Anastasia’s, as quoted by the newspaper; it is not a statement by Merlino.

What about his home and casino bans?
The June 2026 Inquirer feature does not establish Merlino’s precise residence as of October 3, 2026. It also reports that he had been barred from New Jersey casinos since 1988 and from Pennsylvania casinos after a 2016 incident at the former SugarHouse Casino. Those are the newspaper’s dated claims; their status on October 3, 2026 has not been independently confirmed here.
Is there a documentary about Joey Merlino?
The Inquirer reported that Netflix released Mob War: Philadelphia vs. the Mafia in October 2025. Streaming catalogs change, so that report alone does not confirm whether the series is available on Netflix now.
