Yes—a single Contabo VPS can run encoder processes for multiple 24/7 YouTube channels, but neither Contabo nor YouTube guarantees a specific number per server. The practical limit depends on your YouTube account’s stream caps, the VPS’s shared CPU and network capacity, and whether your setup merely forwards prepared video or transcodes it. Measure the exact workload and increase streams gradually rather than relying on a promised channel count.
What sets the limit?
YouTube’s account and stream-key caps
YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance sets a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and three active streams per stream key; both limits apply. These are platform caps, not a recommendation that a VPS can run that many outputs. A channel also needs to be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements and the limits shown in your Live Control Room before planning a setup.
Contabo’s shared resources and network
Contabo documents its VPS instances as KVM-based virtual servers with shared vCPUs and fixed RAM. Its Core, Performance and Storage VPS families differ in CPU generation, storage and port speed; advertised vCPU counts do not mean dedicated physical cores. For example, Core VPS listings span four to 18 vCPUs and 200 Mbit/s to 1 Gbit/s ports in the documentation accessed October 3, 2026. Those listings can change, so confirm the live specifications on Contabo’s VPS documentation and its server portfolio guide before buying.
Contabo says VPS plans have no default bandwidth limit, but that is not a guarantee of unlimited throughput or uptime. Its fair-use terms allow exceptional high or disruptive usage to be throttled at its discretion, and port speed varies by product. What the encoder does
Sending already-encoded media onward, or remuxing it without changing the audio and video, generally has a different CPU burden from decoding and transcoding it. Transcoding adds compute work, while every output contributes to outbound network traffic. This is systems reasoning, not a vendor-validated per-stream capacity figure. The number of streams alone is not enough to size a server.
Estimate capacity before adding channels
- Write down each output’s settings. Record resolution, frame rate, video codec, target video bitrate, audio bitrate and whether the source is already encoded. Note whether each output uses a separate source or requires decoding, resizing, overlays or transcoding.
- Estimate steady outbound demand. Add the target bitrates for all simultaneous outputs. Treat that sum as a baseline, not a complete port-speed requirement: protocol overhead, bursts, retries and other server traffic add demand. Compare it with the advertised port speed and Contabo’s fair-use terms.
- Measure the real encoding path. Start with one output using the intended files and settings. Observe CPU, memory, network use, disk access and whether the stream remains stable. Test pass-through or remuxing separately from transcoding; do not assume they use the same resources.
- Increase concurrency in stages. Add one output at a time and monitor resource use and stream health under realistic, sustained conditions. Leave headroom for reconnects and normal variation instead of sizing right up to a short test’s peak.
- Test unattended operation. Confirm that source files remain available, processes restart after failure, reconnects work, and logs do not grow without limit. A short successful start is not evidence of long-duration stability.
There is no supported formula that converts a Contabo plan’s vCPU count into a fixed number of 24/7 channels. The reliable sizing result is the one you measure for your particular media, codec, output settings and process supervision.

Configure each YouTube output safely
- Check channel eligibility and caps. Confirm verification, restrictions and the active-stream limits in YouTube’s help guidance and Live Control Room before starting multiple outputs.
- Create or select the intended live stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, set up the stream for the correct channel and obtain its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the required connection details.
- Enter the matching ingest details in the encoder. Use the YouTube Live server URL and the stream key for the intended output. Keep a separate, controlled configuration record for each output where appropriate; remember that YouTube limits each key to three active streams.
- Protect stream keys. Treat a key like a password. Do not expose it in screenshots, shell history, logs or public repositories. If it is compromised, reset it through YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.
- Verify each output independently. Confirm that the intended channel receives the intended feed, then check the Live Control Room for connection and stream status. Test a disconnect and recovery path before depending on unattended operation.
Keep content rights and monetization separate from technical uptime
A stream running continuously does not itself establish that a channel can be monetized. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams. On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified its rules by naming the relevant category “inauthentic content”; repetitive or mass-produced material can be ineligible. Content with little variation, minimal commentary or little educational value may raise concerns, and review can consider the channel as a whole, including videos, titles and descriptions. YouTube also assesses reused content at channel level. Read the current YouTube channel monetization policies.
Separately, YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions require compliance with the Community Guidelines and represent that creators hold the necessary rights to use live content on Google services, including music licensing rights. Clear the rights for music, video, images and other material for both the live broadcast and any resulting archive; permission for local playback alone may not cover those uses.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The stream will not connect: Check that the encoder has the correct YouTube Live server URL and stream key, that the intended stream is active, and that the channel can livestream. If a key may have been exposed, reset it rather than continuing to use it.
- Video stalls or outputs disconnect under load: Check aggregate outbound bitrate, port speed, CPU and memory. Reduce concurrent outputs or the workload, and investigate whether transcoding is saturating shared vCPUs. Do not treat Contabo’s no-default-bandwidth-limit statement as a throughput guarantee.
- One key cannot support the planned fan-out: YouTube’s current limit is three active streams per stream key, alongside the 10-active-stream cap per channel. Recheck the account’s actual limits and configure outputs accordingly.
- A process stops and does not return: Review process supervision, source-file access, reconnect behavior and logs. Confirm the recovery procedure through a deliberate test instead of assuming that a VPS restart policy also restores the YouTube stream correctly.
- A stream is technically live but raises policy or rights concerns: Review the channel’s content for repetitive or mass-produced material and verify permissions for both the live use and archive. Technical availability does not override YouTube’s monetization policies or rights requirements.
