Neither Hetzner Cloud nor a spare desktop is automatically cheaper. A fair monthly comparison includes the cloud server’s regional price plus applicable IPv4, tax, data-transfer, storage and backup charges, or the desktop’s measured electricity use and your local tariff. It also weighs setup and maintenance against dependence on your home power and internet. Use your actual stream settings and measured inputs to decide.
Compare the full monthly cost, not just the server price
Hetzner’s price-adjustment table, effective June 15, 2026 for new orders and cloud instance rescales, lists a CX23 at €5.49 per month in Germany and Finland and $6.49 per month in the USA. Both figures exclude IPv4 and VAT; they are regional listed prices, not all-in invoices. Check the live configurator and your account’s terms for the applicable region, transfer allowance and overage, IP, tax, storage and backup charges. Hetzner’s price-adjustment details provide the listed-price context.
| Cost or consideration | Hetzner Cloud | Spare desktop at home |
|---|---|---|
| Compute or hardware | Monthly server charge; the CX23 figures above are regional anchors, not total bills. | No new purchase cost if you already own the desktop. Include any incremental equipment cost only if applicable. |
| Power | Included in the cloud service price, rather than billed as your household PC electricity. | Measure the computer’s average draw and multiply by hours and your electricity tariff. |
| Network | Check included transfer, overage terms and any applicable IP charge. | Consider any incremental home-network cost; the stream depends on your home internet connection. |
| Storage and backups | Check whether the storage and backup arrangement you need adds charges. | Account for local storage and any backup arrangement you choose. |
| Ongoing effort | Configure and maintain a server and its streaming software. | Keep the machine, power and internet connection available; troubleshoot failures at home. |
There is no universal reliability winner established by these cost figures. Cloud hosting shifts the operational work to server configuration and maintenance; a desktop shifts dependence to the local machine, power and ISP. Treat maintenance time and the value of not relying on your home connection as decision factors, not invented dollar amounts.
Calculate the desktop’s electricity cost from your own measurements
Use this formula:
Average watts ÷ 1,000 × operating hours × electricity price per kWh = energy cost

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a 30-day month, continuous operation is 720 hours. For example, a 120 W desktop would use 86.4 kWh in that period: 120 ÷ 1,000 × 720. Multiply 86.4 by your local per-kWh tariff for the example’s energy cost. The 120 W input is an illustrative assumption used by StreamNeo, not a claim about typical desktops or a measurement of your computer. StreamNeo’s cloud-vs-PC cost calculator identifies cost dimensions including compute, transfer, storage, backups and time.
For a more useful estimate, measure the running desktop with a plug-in energy monitor under the workload you plan to use. The draw can depend on the computer and what it is doing; do not substitute a generic wattage for your actual machine. Use your own tariff and the same operating hours as the cloud estimate.

Hold the stream profile constant on both setups
A cost comparison is meaningful only if both options run the same content and stream profile: resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio settings, duration and number of destinations. A prerecorded loop and a live camera feed are different workloads, and the stream settings and encoding method affect resource demand. No universal minimum CPU, RAM or Hetzner instance size is established for every 24/7 stream, so do not assume a CX23 is sufficient for every configuration.
Use YouTube’s live encoder settings to select an ingestion profile. YouTube publishes resolution and bitrate guidance and recommends RTMPS for ingestion. Bitrate also drives continuous outbound data volume, so estimate the transfer for your actual stream and compare it with the server’s current allowance and overage terms. Do not treat cloud transfer as inherently free.

Include the archive limitation in a 24/7 plan
YouTube warns: “If your live stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The length of an uninterrupted stream can therefore matter if you need a complete archive. Plan separately for that requirement—for example, keep a local recording or divide the stream into sessions—and account for the storage and operating effort involved. YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance explains the capture limitation.
Choose based on your inputs and operational priorities
- A desktop may be the lower-cash-cost option when it is already owned, its measured energy cost is low at your tariff, and you accept dependence on home power and internet.
- Cloud may suit you better when keeping a home computer on is undesirable and you are comfortable maintaining a server, after accounting for the complete regional bill rather than compute alone.
- Neither estimate is complete until the stream profile, transfer, storage or backup needs, tax and IP treatment are checked. Compare maintenance and failure recovery separately from cash costs.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded YouTube loop, StreamNeo is a managed alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
