There is no single monthly electricity cost for running a 24/7 YouTube ambient music channel on a mini PC. The answer depends on the complete setup’s average power draw while it is actually streaming and the electricity rate on your bill. Measure the system at the wall under representative streaming conditions, then calculate its energy use and apply your tariff. An adapter’s rated capacity—or a reading taken only while the computer is idle—does not tell you what your streaming setup will cost.
Calculate the electricity cost from your own meter reading
Use this formula for the energy consumed by the equipment you include in the measurement:
Energy (kWh) = average draw (W) × operating hours ÷ 1,000
Then multiply the energy in kilowatt-hours (kWh) by your applicable price per kWh. For a 30-day estimate, use 720 hours; for a full year of uninterrupted operation, use 8,760 hours. A 30-day month is a convenient estimate, not the same as an annual average month.

This is an energy-only estimate. It does not include the mini PC’s purchase price, internet service, backup power, or fixed charges and taxes that may appear on your electricity bill. Include the monitor, audio gear, router, or other equipment only if you want its consumption included; a plug-in meter on the mini PC alone will not measure those other devices.
What published mini PC power figures can—and cannot—tell you
Mini PC Lab’s 2026 guide illustrates the calculation with a 10 W load at $0.12/kWh, which works out to $10.51 per year. That is an illustrative calculation, not a current national electricity tariff or a measured YouTube-streaming result. Your bill will differ if your measured draw or local rate differs.

The same guide reports wall-socket readings for a Beelink EQ14 of 6.2 W at idle, 8–10 W under light load, and 18–22 W at full CPU load. Its idle protocol was ten minutes of stable idle on Proxmox VE 8.x with no virtual machines running. It also gives a 5.5–6.5 W idle range for generic Intel N100 mini PCs in its home-server measurement context. Do not use an idle number as your streaming estimate. Encoding, playback, connected devices, power settings, and the particular machine can change wall draw. The workload-specific average is the number that belongs in your cost calculation.

Measure the complete setup while it is streaming
- Put a plug-in electricity usage meter between the wall outlet and the mini PC’s power supply. If you want a whole-setup figure, arrange to include the relevant peripherals as well. Mini PC Lab names the Kill A Watt P4460 and an energy-monitoring smart plug as examples of measurement options; its guide does not establish their current price or availability. - Run the actual playback and encoder setup: use the scene, resolution, frame rate, and other settings you intend to keep live. Include startup and routine operating periods rather than recording only a brief idle or peak reading.
- Record the average watts shown by the meter over representative operation. A short-lived peak is not the same as average draw, and a reading from a different workload is not a substitute.
- Multiply that average by the hours you want to estimate, divide by 1,000, and multiply the result by your applicable energy rate. State whether your result is for 720 hours, 8,760 hours, or another period.
For a hardware comparison, keep the workload, meter setup, connected devices, and tariff assumptions consistent. Consider sustained stream stability, upload reliability, noise and thermal behavior, and purchase cost alongside average wall draw. The available figures do not establish a best mini PC for this specific workload.
Configure and check the YouTube stream before relying on it
YouTube’s setup guidance is to create or select a stream in Studio, enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder, configure the encoder, and start it. Keep the stream key private: it is the credential the encoder uses to send video to your channel. - Choose settings for your connection. YouTube recommends matching stream quality to the available internet connection, running an upload speed test, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health.
- Use platform guidance as a starting point, not a power estimate. For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube’s current encoder-settings table lists 5–14 Mbps across its minimum and recommended bitrate columns. For AV1 or H.265 at the same resolution and frame rate, it lists 4–10 Mbps. These are ingestion bitrate recommendations, not a measurement of your upload speed or your mini PC’s power draw.
- Check the encoder protocol and timing. YouTube’s settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, supported codecs, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval. Check the current table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you plan to use; do not assume the 1080p/30 figures apply to other settings.
- Test and monitor. Start with a private test if appropriate for your workflow, check that the encoder is sending video and audio, and monitor YouTube’s stream health before treating the setup as dependable. For an ambient music channel, make sure you have the rights needed for the music and visuals you stream. A continuous broadcast does not by itself establish that the material is permitted or that it will meet YouTube’s channel policies. Use the copyright safety checklist as a preflight prompt, not as legal advice or a guarantee of YouTube approval.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24-hour broadcast exceeds that condition, so do not assume one uninterrupted 24/7 stream will be saved as a single video.
