To restart a YouTube stream automatically on an OVHcloud VPS, run the encoder as a supervised Linux service and configure YouTube’s broadcast settings separately. A service manager can restart a failed FFmpeg process; that does not by itself guarantee that YouTube has started or resumed the broadcast. Check both the VPS process and YouTube’s incoming feed after recovery.
How do I restart a YouTube stream automatically on an OVHcloud VPS?
Use two layers of configuration:
- On the VPS: run the encoder as a long-running service managed by the operating system, with a restart policy and a delay between attempts.
- In YouTube: use the intended stream URL and stream key, and decide whether the broadcast should start and stop automatically when encoder activity begins and ends.
The VPS runs the sender. YouTube receives that encoded feed and manages the broadcast lifecycle according to its settings and, where applicable, API operations. A restarted process is not proof that viewers can see a live broadcast.
How do I make FFmpeg restart if it crashes?
On a Linux distribution using systemd, create a unit for the encoder and have systemd restart it when the process exits unsuccessfully. This is an implementation pattern, not an OVHcloud-prescribed configuration. Adjust the executable path, service user, environment, working directory, and FFmpeg command for your distribution and setup; check your installed systemd documentation for the exact behavior of directives on that system.
1. Prepare the FFmpeg command
First make sure the command works when run manually as the same user that will run the service. It must send to the correct YouTube ingest URL using the stream key for the intended stream. Keep credentials out of public scripts, logs, and shell history; restrict access to any file that contains the key. If a key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder configuration.

The research for this guide does not establish a single bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe interval suitable for every stream. Use settings appropriate to your source and YouTube’s current encoder guidance rather than copying a value without regard to the content or connection.
2. Create a service unit
For example, save a unit at /etc/systemd/system/youtube-ffmpeg.service and adapt the placeholders before enabling it:

Replace it with the complete command that has already been tested, including the input and YouTube output URL. Set the real FFmpeg path with command -v ffmpeg. Protect the environment file if it contains the stream key, and ensure the service user can read the input media and configuration.
3. Load, start, and inspect the service
- Tell systemd to read the new unit:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable it at boot and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-ffmpeg.service. - Check the current service state:
sudo systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.service. - Read recent service output:
sudo journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service -n 100 --no-pager. To follow new entries as they arrive, usesudo journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service -f.
A restart policy only helps when the service manager can detect that the process has exited. It cannot repair an invalid command, expired or incorrect key, missing input file, blocked network connection, or rejection by YouTube. The journal is the place to diagnose local command and process errors.

Will YouTube automatically resume the broadcast?
Not necessarily. YouTube treats the stream feed and the broadcast event as related but distinct resources. A broadcast is associated with a stream; a stream can be reused for broadcasts. Confirm that the encoder is sending to the stream bound to the broadcast you intend to show.
Recurring stream with auto-start and auto-stop
YouTube’s stream settings include auto-start and auto-stop. When auto-start is enabled, YouTube documents that the broadcast starts when video begins arriving on its bound stream. Auto-stop controls the corresponding end behavior; Google’s API reference describes the broadcast stopping around one minute after the channel owner stops sending video. Check the actual settings rather than assuming a reconnect will start every broadcast.

Scheduled or API-managed event
YouTube’s encoder help flow for scheduled streams instructs creators to start the encoder, wait for the preview, and click Go live. For API-managed broadcasts, the workflow may require an explicit liveBroadcasts.transition operation when auto-start is disabled. A service restart does not issue that API transition on its own.
Google’s lifecycle guidance says broadcast transitions typically take 5 to 10 seconds, and some can take up to one minute. Those are documented workflow timings, not a guarantee that a particular reconnect will complete within that time.

Verify recovery on both sides
Check the VPS process
- Use
systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.serviceto see whether the service is active and whether it has been restarting. - Use the service journal to look for FFmpeg errors, failed inputs, authentication problems, or repeated exits.
- Confirm that the service is running the intended command and has access to the media and protected key configuration.
Check YouTube ingest and broadcast state
- Open the relevant YouTube Live Control Room event and check its preview and live state.
- For an API workflow, Google’s lifecycle guide uses
liveStream.status.streamStatusequal toactiveto indicate that YouTube is receiving encoder data correctly. - If the feed is arriving but the broadcast is not live, check auto-start and the event’s lifecycle state; an API-managed workflow may need the appropriate transition.
A running systemd unit establishes only local process health. It does not establish that YouTube is receiving usable video or that the broadcast is live.
Choose the right pattern for recurring streams and events

The right pattern depends on whether you are maintaining a recurring feed or managing separate scheduled events. YouTube’s API models broadcasts and streams separately, so verify the association rather than assuming that restarting any sender will recover the intended event.
Common restart and reconnect problems
- The service will not start: inspect
systemctl statusand the journal. Check the FFmpeg path, unit syntax, service user, working directory, file permissions, and environment file. - FFmpeg starts and exits repeatedly: read the FFmpeg error in the journal. Confirm that the input is available and that the output address and stream key are correct. A restart policy can repeat a failure; it cannot correct its cause.
- The service is active but YouTube shows no incoming video: check the FFmpeg output log, network access, stream URL, and key. Then check YouTube’s Live Control Room or API status for the stream.
- YouTube receives the feed but the event is not live: inspect the broadcast’s auto-start setting and current lifecycle state. If auto-start is off, follow the relevant manual or API-managed transition workflow.
- A key reset stops the reconnect: update the key wherever the encoder reads it, then restart the service and verify ingest again.
- The VPS is unreachable or its firewall is misconfigured: OVHcloud documents rescue mode for diagnosing network problems, repairing a broken operating system, and fixing a misconfigured software firewall. Entering rescue mode requires a reboot into that environment and interrupts running services.
VPS responsibility and reliability limits
OVHcloud describes its VPS as a full-root-access virtual machine and places security and stability responsibility on the administrator. You manage the operating system, service configuration, credentials, updates, firewall, and testing. OVHcloud’s documentation shows service management with systemctl, but it does not endorse the example unit above.
Automatic process restart is recovery behavior, not a promise of uninterrupted playback. It depends on the process exiting in a way the service manager detects, valid credentials, working network access, and YouTube accepting the feed. The cited documentation does not establish a guaranteed reconnect time or uninterrupted viewer experience.
