Yes. AWS Lightsail can run FFmpeg and send a live feed to YouTube, but whether it can sustain your particular 24/7 stream depends on the workload. Continuous video encoding can demand steady CPU, while Lightsail’s common plans are burstable. AWS recommends EC2 for workloads such as video encoding that need consistently high CPU performance. Test your actual input and output settings before committing to a plan.
Can Lightsail keep an FFmpeg stream running continuously?
Technically, yes: a Lightsail virtual server can run FFmpeg and connect to YouTube Live. That does not establish that a given bundle will handle a specific encode reliably. No universal minimum plan can be named without knowing the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and FFmpeg workload.
AWS describes Lightsail instances as suited to workloads whose CPU demand is not consistently high, and recommends EC2 when consistently high CPU performance is needed for applications such as video encoding. AWS also lists compute-optimized Lightsail plans as potentially useful for compute-intensive work. These points are compatible: a compute-optimized plan may be worth testing, but it is not a guarantee of sustained encoding capacity. See the AWS Lightsail FAQ and Lightsail plan details.
Why “24/7” changes the decision
Burstable plans have a CPU baseline and finite accrued burst capacity. AWS says sustained operation in the burstable zone eventually consumes the available CPU capacity. That behavior matters for a continuous transcode, which may keep the processor busy, but less CPU-intensive work may behave differently. The relevant question is not simply whether FFmpeg starts; it is whether your selected instance can maintain the actual workload over time.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
AWS gives a figure of 4.17% of CPU burst capacity accrued per hour for Lightsail plans, except Linux/Unix plans at $380 and above and Windows plans at $570 and above. This describes burst-capacity accrual, not a measure of sustained CPU throughput. Check the current plan terms rather than using that figure to predict encoding capacity.
Identify what FFmpeg will do before choosing an instance
Write down the exact pipeline you intend to run. The more processing the server must perform, the more important a representative CPU test becomes. Sending already encoded media with little processing is a different workload from continuously transcoding or compositing video; this is an engineering distinction, not a capacity guarantee for any Lightsail bundle.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Input and processing: Note whether FFmpeg will pass through or remux existing media, transcode it, scale it, or combine sources.
- Output: Specify the video codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio codec.
- Resources: Match the selected plan’s vCPU, memory, storage, and transfer allowance to the real media files, process, and logs. Lightsail bundles include fixed resources, so price alone is not a useful sizing method.
- Test conditions: Run the intended command with representative footage and the exact output settings, then observe CPU use and YouTube stream health for long enough to expose sustained-load problems.
There is no substantiated “best” Lightsail bundle for an unspecified FFmpeg command. If the test shows persistent CPU pressure or an unstable output, consider a more suitable compute option, including EC2 for consistently high CPU needs.
Match FFmpeg output to YouTube Live
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant-bitrate encoding; and up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS when available. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings when configuring your output.

Recommended H.264 video bitrates
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations for H.264 live ingest, not universal bitrate prescriptions for every codec or video. Choose settings for your actual output and keep the total stream bitrate within the available network capacity.
Connect FFmpeg to the correct YouTube stream
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Set FFmpeg to the chosen ingest protocol and encoder settings, then enter the stream URL and stream key supplied by YouTube.
- Keep the key private. If it is exposed, YouTube documents resetting it; do not place a real key in a script shared publicly or in logs you publish. See YouTube’s stream key guidance.
- Start with a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast and confirm that YouTube receives a healthy signal before relying on the stream.
Estimate transfer and check the regional plan terms
A 24/7 stream continuously sends data from the server to the internet. Estimate monthly outbound data from the actual total bitrate and runtime, then compare it with the allowance for the specific Lightsail plan and region. For a rough estimate, a continuous 1 Mbps stream transfers about 10.8 GB in a 30-day month before protocol overhead; multiply by your total bitrate in Mbps for a first-pass estimate. This is arithmetic, not a Lightsail allowance or a quote of AWS charges.

Lightsail transfer allowances vary by region. AWS says excess data transfer out to the internet may incur charges when an instance exceeds its allowance. Confirm the current regional plan allowance and overage terms on the AWS Lightsail pricing page before deployment; do not assume all regions have the same terms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the stream, monitor it, and plan for failure
YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion, checking stream health, and testing encoder failover. Its guidance also recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream bitrate. For a Lightsail server, verify that its outbound route can reliably sustain the selected ingest bitrate with that headroom. A successful start does not prove that the stream will remain healthy under continuous load.

A VPS that remains provisioned is not, by itself, a guarantee of continuous YouTube broadcasting. The AWS and YouTube guidance does not establish uptime or automatic recovery for a particular Lightsail-and-FFmpeg setup. For YouTube’s network recommendations, see YouTube streaming tips.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than an FFmpeg server to maintain, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded video, not camera broadcasts. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
