Changing the video source during a YouTube live stream does not automatically remove material already captured in the broadcast archive. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, but says Content ID claims on archived streams are made after the stream ends. Check the archived video and claim details in YouTube Studio to see what was identified, when it appeared, and which remedy fits.
Why the claim can appear after you changed sources
YouTube handles live detection and archive claims at different stages. During a live broadcast, its systems may show a placeholder, warning, interruption, or termination if they detect third-party content. Separately, YouTube Help says: “Content ID claims are only made after you complete your live streams, if you decide to archive the video.” YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
That means a source change is not proof that the archived stream contains no matched material. A portion from before the change may remain in the recording, or a match may relate to another part of the archive. The general YouTube guidance does not establish what occurred in a particular encoder or source-switch workflow; the claim details and recording are needed to diagnose an individual case.
Find what YouTube matched before taking action
- In YouTube Studio, open the archived live video and locate its copyright or claim notice.
- Open the claim details and note the claimant, the identified work, the affected segment or timestamps, and any policy or territory information shown.
- Compare those details with the archived video and the stream timeline, including when you changed sources. Check whether the claim covers only a segment or whether more than one claimant has identified different material.
- Keep a local copy of the archive if you have one, and retain relevant rights or license records before editing or disputing.

Choose a remedy that matches the claim
If the match is valid and you want to keep the archive
YouTube Studio may offer options to trim the claimed segment, replace claimed audio, or erase or mute it. The matched material must be fully removed for the claim to clear through these edits. Preview the result carefully: as of June 2025, saved Studio Editor changes cannot be reverted. Keep a backup before saving. YouTube Help: Remove claimed content from videos
If you have rights, a valid copyright exception, or believe the match is mistaken
You may dispute a Content ID claim when you have a defensible basis, such as the necessary rights, a copyright exception, or a mistaken match. YouTube cautions creators not to dispute without valid grounds. After a dispute, the claimant has 30 days to respond. YouTube Help: Dispute a Content ID claim

If you licensed the material
Contact the rights holder and ask it to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube advises licensed creators to do this because a license alone may not prevent live detection or interruption. Its guidance says: “If you’ve licensed third-party content to use in your stream, ask the owner of the content to add your channel to their allowlist through Content ID.” YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
A claim is not automatically a copyright strike
A Content ID claim can affect a video’s monetization or availability, depending on the rights holder’s policy. A copyright removal request is a separate process; if valid, it can result in a copyright strike. A strike involving an active or archived live stream may affect livestream access. Check the notice in Studio to identify which process applies rather than treating every claim as a strike. YouTube Help: Copyright strikes

How to reduce disruption on future streams
- Use material you created, have permission to use, or can otherwise lawfully include; keep documentation that supports your rights.
- For licensed material, arrange Content ID allowlisting with the rights holder before streaming, rather than assuming a source change will resolve detection.
- Keep a local archive. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, while a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; the platform recommends a local backup. YouTube Help: Archive live streams
