How to Rotate Playlists on a YouTube 24/7 Stream Without Repeating the Last Video

OBS can loop and shuffle a VLC Video playlist, but shuffle alone does not guarantee a fresh order or prevent a repeat at the pass boundary. Learn how to test it and what stricter no-repeat behavior requires.

To rotate a playlist in an OBS-generated YouTube live stream, add the videos to an OBS VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. Enable Shuffle Playlist if you want a randomized order, but OBS does not document that shuffle is recalculated on every pass or that the next pass starts with a different video. For a strict no-repeat rule, use a playlist controller with a bag-shuffle mode or an explicit boundary check, then test the transition before leaving the stream unattended.

First, define what “without repeating” means

These are different requirements, and a shuffled list does not automatically satisfy all of them:

  • No immediate repeat: the first video in the next pass must differ from the last video in the previous pass.
  • No repeats within a pass: every video plays once before any video returns. This is often called a bag shuffle.
  • A different order on each pass: the playlist gets a new order, but that alone does not ensure the boundary videos differ.

Choose the guarantee you need before configuring the playlist. If the key concern is that viewers do not see the same clip back-to-back at the loop boundary, verify that boundary specifically.

YouTube’s player loop does not rotate a live broadcast

YouTube’s Loop control repeats a video or playlist for an individual viewer in the YouTube player. It does not change the video feed being sent to a live broadcast. For an OBS stream, playlist order is handled by the playout setup—in this case, the source in OBS that supplies the outgoing video. YouTube’s Live Streaming API likewise distinguishes the stream resource used to transmit audio and video from the broadcast resource representing the event: YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up a looping playlist in OBS

  1. Prepare the files. Put the local video files you have the rights to broadcast in a playlist. Check that the files play correctly before building the unattended workflow.
  2. Install VLC and check architecture. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See OBS Media Sources documentation.
  3. Add a playlist-capable source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and populate its playlist with the video files. A single-file Media Source is not the same as a multi-item playlist source.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist. This restarts the list after its final item. Looping controls whether playback returns to the list; it does not, by itself, promise a new order.
  5. Decide whether to enable Shuffle Playlist. Use it if a randomized order is useful, but do not treat the setting as a documented guarantee of reshuffling at every pass or of no repeated video at the boundary.
  6. Check source visibility behavior. OBS documents options for whether a VLC source stops, pauses, or continues playing while hidden. If the source appears in multiple scenes or is hidden during transitions, choose and test the behavior that fits your scene setup.
  7. Test a complete pass and the boundary. Watch or record the playlist through its final item and into the next pass. Confirm the actual sequence rather than assuming the shuffle setting meets your no-repeat requirement.

OBS documents playlist items, Loop Playlist, Shuffle Playlist, and visibility behavior for VLC Video sources, but its documentation does not specify the shuffle guarantees described above. See OBS Media Sources documentation. An OBS forum discussion reports that a shuffled sequence may persist unchanged across later loops; treat this as a user-reported behavior, not a permanent guarantee for every OBS version: OBS forum discussion about playlist shuffle.

For strict no-repeat behavior, use a shuffle bag or boundary check

If each video must play once before any returns, choose a playlist controller that explicitly implements that rule. The OBS project Playlist Deck describes its Shuffle mode as a bag shuffle in which every item plays once, in random order, before repeats. That is the project’s feature description, not an independent compatibility or reliability guarantee. Check that it works with your OBS version and scene, then test a complete pass and the next start before relying on it for a long stream: Playlist Deck project.

If you only need to prevent an immediate repeat, the controller must also compare the last item of one pass with the first item chosen for the next. A newly randomized order is not sufficient unless the controller enforces that condition.

Troubleshoot repeated clips and unexpected playlist behavior

  • The same clip plays over and over: confirm that the source is VLC Video with multiple playlist entries, not a single-file Media Source looping one file.
  • The playlist ends instead of restarting: check Loop Playlist. It controls whether the list restarts; shuffle is a separate setting.
  • The same shuffled order returns: OBS’s shuffle documentation does not promise a fresh order on every pass, and users have reported a sequence persisting across loops. Use a controller with an explicit bag shuffle or boundary check if the distinction matters.
  • A clip pauses or restarts when changing scenes: inspect the VLC source’s visibility behavior and test it while switching between the scenes used in the live layout.
  • YouTube repeats a viewer’s video, but the live feed does not change: YouTube’s player Loop control affects that viewer’s playback, not the content OBS sends to the broadcast.
  • The playlist loops but the broadcast stops: playlist looping manages media order; it does not establish that the live stream will remain available or recover if the connection drops. Test and monitor the full broadcast workflow.

Rights and broadcast checks

Only add videos you have the necessary rights to broadcast. A playlist setup does not grant permission to rebroadcast third-party material. Playlist rotation also does not establish that a channel or stream complies with YouTube’s policies; check the rights and platform requirements that apply to your content before going live.
