To switch between different playlists at set times, you also need a scheduling layer that changes the URL; YouTube’s player parameters alone do not schedule changes. The Raspberry Pi kiosk instructions below provide a boot-to-browser pattern, but not a verified time-of-day playlist scheduler.
Decide what “rotation” means
- Repeat one playlist: Load the playlist in YouTube’s embedded player and set
loop=1. The player plays the playlist through and returns to its first video. - Switch among playlists on a schedule: Use a local script or a browser page to select and load the appropriate playlist URL at each planned time. This is separate from looping, and its implementation depends on the Raspberry Pi OS release and graphical session.
The setup here explains playlist playback and kiosk startup. It does not supply a verified cron or systemd timer recipe for switching playlists by time of day.
Build a YouTube playlist embed
Get the playlist ID
Copy the ID of the YouTube playlist you want to display. In Google’s documented playlist embed, the ID is passed as the value of list, alongside listType=playlist. A separate video ID is not required when both playlist parameters are specified.
Use the playlist URL
Replace PLAYLIST_ID in this URL with the actual playlist ID:

Here, autoplay=1 asks the player to start the initial video when it loads. loop=1 makes the player repeat the entire playlist, rather than schedule a change to another playlist. See Google for Developers’ YouTube player parameter reference for the supported parameters.

Choose a direct embed or a wrapper page
| Approach | Best for | Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Open the embed URL directly | A simple display of one playlist | It provides the player without a custom page layout. |
| Put the embed in an HTML page | A display that needs a custom layout or additional controls | The page must give the player enough room: Google’s minimum viewport is 200 by 200 pixels, and Google recommends a 16:9 player at least 480 pixels wide and 270 pixels tall. |
Google states that autoplay can start playback without interaction, but playback data collection and sharing occur when the page loads. YouTube Help also says that autoplayed embedded videos do not increment views. Consider those points when choosing an unattended or public display.
Start Chromium in kiosk mode on the Pi
Check the setup baseline
Raspberry Pi’s official kiosk tutorial describes Raspberry Pi OS 64-bit and a Raspberry Pi 3 or newer with at least 1 GB of RAM as its baseline for a graphical browser kiosk. It lists a Raspberry Pi, suitable power supply, microSD card, display cable, and monitor. These are tutorial setup requirements, not a guarantee that every video, resolution, or playlist will perform well on every Pi.

Storage and display compatibility depend on your model and workload. Most Raspberry Pi models use microSD as boot media, while some models support other storage; check the documentation for your specific model before buying parts. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation covers boot media.
Configure desktop startup
- Prepare Raspberry Pi OS 64-bit and the graphical desktop. Connect the Pi to its display and network, and make sure Chromium is available in the desktop session.
- Open the labwc autostart file. The Raspberry Pi kiosk tutorial uses
.config/labwc/autostartto start Chromium when the desktop loads. Follow the tutorial’s instructions for creating or editing this file on your installed system. - Set Chromium to open your display. Use the tutorial’s kiosk launch pattern, replacing its example destinations with your playlist embed URL or a page containing the embed. The tutorial’s sample opens two URLs as tabs and runs a script that switches tabs every ten seconds.
- Restart the desktop or Pi and verify playback. Confirm that Chromium opens the intended page, the playlist starts, and playback continues through to the next loop.
The Raspberry Pi example demonstrates desktop startup and periodic tab switching. It does not show how to load a different playlist ID at a particular time of day. See the official Raspberry Pi kiosk tutorial for its setup pattern.

Switch between playlists at set times
A clock-based rotation needs something beyond loop=1: at each scheduled time, the Pi must select the active playlist URL and cause Chromium to load it. Two broad implementation choices are a local timer and script that reload the browser, or a browser-side page that changes the embed URL. The choice depends on the installed Raspberry Pi OS release and graphical session; the cited kiosk example does not validate either method as a universal scheduler.
Plan the schedule before implementing it
- Record each time window and the playlist ID that should play during it.
- Decide whether a change should interrupt the current video immediately or wait for it to finish. The basic embed URL does not define that scheduling policy.
- Test that the schedule uses the Pi’s intended local time and that Chromium actually reloads the new playlist when a window begins.
- Test startup, a scheduled transition, and recovery after a restart on the exact OS image and desktop session you will use.
Because the required commands and session behavior vary by installation, do not copy a generic cron or systemd timer command without verifying it on the target Pi. The official kiosk tutorial establishes the browser-autostart pattern, not a calendar scheduler.

Troubleshoot playback and rotation
- The playlist will not load: Check that the URL includes both
listType=playlistand the correct playlist ID inlist. - The playlist plays once and stops: Check that the URL includes
loop=1. This repeats the current playlist; it does not switch to another playlist by time. - Playback does not start automatically: Check for
autoplay=1and verify behavior in the actual Chromium kiosk session. Autoplay is a player request, not a time-of-day scheduling feature. - The page or player is clipped: Check the embedded player’s size. Google’s minimum viewport is 200 by 200 pixels; its recommended 16:9 size is at least 480 by 270 pixels.
- Chromium does not open after startup: Check that the graphical desktop session is loading the labwc autostart file at
.config/labwc/autostartand that the launch pattern matches the installed system. - A scheduled playlist change does not happen: Check the local scheduler or page logic that selects and reloads the URL, then test it in the active graphical session. Playlist loop parameters do not provide that scheduler.
Or let it run in the cloud
A Raspberry Pi kiosk displays YouTube playback on the device; it is not the same as keeping your channel live with pre-recorded video. If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube live stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on.
Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes 10 GB of storage per slot, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
