How to Schedule a YouTube Live Playlist by Video Duration

YouTube Studio schedules the live event, but playlist timing belongs to your encoder or playout service. Learn how to play once, loop, verify the feed, and plan for long-stream archive limits.

You can schedule the YouTube live event in YouTube Studio, but Studio does not document a setting that totals playlist runtimes and ends the stream when the videos finish. That timing has to be handled by the encoder or a compatible playout service. Configure that tool to play the playlist once, repeat it, or stop at a chosen time, then connect it to the scheduled event with YouTube’s stream URL and key.

First decide what “by video duration” means

There are two different plans that are easy to confuse:

  • Play once: Start the playlist and end the broadcast after its videos have played once. The desired runtime is the sum of the video durations, plus any gaps, transitions, or other time the playout system adds.
  • Run 24/7: Keep the broadcast going by repeating the playlist or otherwise supplying video continuously. A playlist’s first-pass runtime does not determine when a 24/7 stream ends.

YouTube schedules the live event; an encoder or compatible playout service supplies the video feed. YouTube Studio’s documented scheduling workflow does not include an automatic playlist-duration end-time control. A provider-specific tool may offer one, but check the chosen service’s current settings rather than assuming all playout tools calculate the same way.

Schedule the event and configure the playlist

  1. Create the scheduled event: In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room, go to the Manage tab, and create a scheduled stream. You can reuse stream settings or create a new stream. A scheduled stream can appear as upcoming, and viewers may be able to opt in to reminders.
  2. Set the playlist behavior in your encoder or playout service: Put the videos in the intended order, then choose whether to play them once, repeat them, or stop at a specified time. If you want the broadcast to end when the last video finishes, use a play-once mode or a stop-time feature in that tool. If it offers to calculate the end time from total playlist duration, confirm whether it accounts for gaps and transitions.
  3. Connect the encoder: Copy the scheduled event’s stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: it authorizes the encoder to send video to your YouTube stream. Do not publish or share it.
  4. Start and verify the feed: Start playback in the encoder or hosted playout service. Check the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room, then complete the go-live step presented for the scheduled broadcast. Confirm that the right video is playing before relying on unattended playback.
  5. Plan for the full runtime: For a local encoder, the computer, power, network, and playback source need to remain available for the planned session. For hosted playout, check the provider’s monitoring, recovery, and stop-time controls. A configured loop alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.

Choose where the playlist plays

The key difference is which system supplies the video and remains available throughout the broadcast. The comparison below describes operating models, not a performance or uptime ranking; specific scheduling controls and terms depend on the service you choose.

Approach Playlist control What must stay available Duration-based ending What to verify
Local encoder Set ordering and repeat or play-once behavior in the encoder or playback setup. The computer, playback source, power, and network used to send the stream. Use a play-once configuration or a supported stop-time control; YouTube Studio does not document a playlist-runtime calculator. Playback behavior, stream-key security, monitoring, and what happens if the computer or connection fails.
Hosted playout service Depends on the service’s playlist and looping controls. The hosted service must continue supplying the feed; local equipment requirements depend on the provider. Some provider documentation describes setting an end time from total playlist duration. This is not a general YouTube Studio feature. Whether the feature is currently available, whether it plays once or loops, how duration is calculated, recovery and monitoring controls, stream-key handling, and price and program terms.

Check YouTube’s archive limit before choosing a long runtime

YouTube Help says: “If your live stream is less than 12 hours long, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” It also cautions: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” This is an archive warning, not a claim that every stream longer than 12 hours will be stopped. If you need a replay, plan around that limitation rather than assuming a 24/7 broadcast will produce a complete archive.

Troubleshoot common scheduling and playback problems

  • The stream is scheduled, but no video arrives: Check that the encoder is using the stream URL and key for the intended event, that the encoder has started, and that Live Control Room shows an incoming preview.
  • The stream starts but ends at the wrong time: Check the playlist mode and the encoder or provider’s stop-time setting. Studio does not document a control that derives an end time from playlist duration, so verify the calculation and any gaps or transitions in the playout tool.
  • The playlist stops after one pass when you expected 24/7 playback: Change the playout setting to repeat or loop. A scheduled event does not itself make the playlist repeat.
  • The broadcast drops during unattended playback: For a local setup, check the computer, power, network, and playback source. For a hosted setup, consult that provider’s monitoring and recovery controls. Do not treat looping as a guarantee against interruptions.
  • The replay is missing or incomplete: Check the stream length against YouTube’s archive guidance; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that needs an uploaded playlist to run continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no home computer or connection has to stay on. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera-based live feed. Its documented workflow is for always-on looping, not a promise of a playlist-duration-based stop time, so use an appropriate playout control if your requirement is to end precisely after one pass.
