To make a playlist of local video files start over in an OBS-produced YouTube livestream, add the files to an OBS VLC Video source and turn on Loop Playlist. The setting restarts the source after it runs out of media files. It does not loop a playlist in the YouTube player, nor does it keep a failed broadcast online.
Choose the loop that matches what you mean

Set up an OBS playlist that restarts
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. VLC is required for the VLC Video source. Match their architectures: if OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC. See OBS’s media-source requirements.
- Open the scene you will broadcast. In the Sources panel, add a VLC Video source. This source accepts a playlist of media items; OBS’s Media Source is for a single local file.
- Add and order your files. Add the local video or audio items to the VLC Video playlist and arrange them in the order you want. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence; enable it only if you want randomized playback.
- Enable Loop Playlist. Confirm the option is on. OBS describes it as restarting the source once it has run out of media files, and its documentation lists it as on by default.
- Set visibility behavior deliberately. VLC Video has a Visibility Behaviour property. If you switch to another scene and need this source to keep playing while hidden, choose a continue-playing behavior rather than one that pauses or stops it. OBS’s documented default is to stop when not visible and restart when visible.
- Preview the end of the queue. Before relying on the scene during a broadcast, observe the transition from the final item back to the first. Check that the playlist order and hidden-source behavior match your intended show.
- Start the broadcast separately. Start the encoder in OBS, then follow the YouTube Live Control Room steps. YouTube’s production guide distinguishes receiving the encoder preview from pressing Go Live; a looping source alone does not publish a live broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming production guide.
Why the queue can run out without the stream ending
The playlist loop controls media playback at the source. It is separate from the encoder, your computer and network, and YouTube’s live broadcast. If the source is not set to loop, the media can finish even while the broadcast remains connected; if the encoder or connection fails, enabling Loop Playlist does not recover that broadcast.
For a single clip, the OBS Media Source’s Loop control is the simpler choice. For a rotation of multiple local files, use VLC Video and its playlist loop instead. Don’t use YouTube’s player Loop button to solve either outgoing-stream problem: it affects playback for someone watching on YouTube, not the signal OBS sends.
Copyright and rebroadcast checks
Looping a file does not grant permission to stream it. Before broadcasting or archiving music, documentary footage, performances, or other material, confirm that you have the necessary clearances. YouTube’s live-production guide advises creators to check whether their performance rights cover live use, the archived video, or both. The rights that apply depend on the content and your arrangements.
