For a standard SDR stream, use RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), progressive Rec. 709 video at 8-bit, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Match the bitrate to the resolution and frame rate you actually send. HDR is a separate workflow: it requires HEVC, 10-bit source-matched HDR metadata, and HLS ingest.
Recommended H.265 settings for SDR
YouTube’s general live encoder guidance, checked October 3, 2026, lists H.265/HEVC as an accepted video codec over RTMP/RTMPS, alongside H.264 and AV1. The recommended SDR settings below are YouTube’s published ingest guidance, not independent quality thresholds. Check the encoder’s outgoing signal: a filename or container does not establish what the encoder sends.
Video and keyframes
- Codec: H.265/HEVC.
- Protocol: RTMPS is the recommended encrypted transport for the general SDR workflow; RTMP is also documented. Choose HLS only if the encoder requires it or you are configuring HDR.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Scan and pixel shape: progressive scan and square pixels.
- Advanced settings: 2 B-frames, 1 reference frame, and CABAC.
- SDR color: Rec. 709, 8-bit.
- Resolution and frame rate: preserve the source’s intended frame rate and aspect ratio where the encoder allows, and choose the ingest resolution you will actually output. YouTube says Live Control Room automatically detects encoder settings; custom stream keys allow manual resolution settings.
Bitrate by ingest resolution and frame rate
Use the recommended column as YouTube’s target for AV1/H.265 ingest. The minimum is YouTube’s published minimum, not a recommended setting. Values are Mbps.

For example, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60 H.265/AV1 ingest; for 2160p, it recommends 30 Mbps at 30 fps and 35 Mbps at 60 fps. These are current settings-page figures accessed in 2026.

Audio
- YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio; use AAC if you need 5.1, which is supported only for AAC.
- Use 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1.
- Published audio bitrates are 128 Kbps stereo and 384 Kbps 5.1.
HDR needs HEVC and HLS
Do not reuse the SDR checklist for HDR. YouTube’s HDR live guidance specifies H.265/HEVC only, 10-bit video, BT.2020 primaries, and transfer characteristics matching the source: ST 2084 PQ or HLG. It also specifies BT.2020 non-constant-luminance matrix coefficients. Metadata must describe the actual HDR source; labeling SDR or mismatched footage as HDR does not make it HDR.
HLS configuration for HDR
- Select an HLS stream-key protocol and leave “Turn on manual settings” unchecked (the default), as YouTube instructs for HDR.
- Use TS segments 1–4 seconds long and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- Use HTTPS POST/PUT, not byte-range mode; HTTPS is the only permitted encryption in the described HLS setup.
- Expect more latency than RTMP: HLS sends video in segments rather than as a continuous stream. “Ultra low-latency” is unavailable with HLS.
YouTube documents HLS as an option for encoders that need HLS ingest and for HDR. Confirm that your encoder supports both the chosen codec and protocol.

Set up the prerecorded stream and test it
A prerecorded H.265 file is not automatically a live stream. The encoder or service must turn it into a valid continuous feed using the selected ingest protocol. What can be passed through unchanged depends on the software or service, so verify its actual output rather than assuming the file will stream as-is.
- Confirm channel eligibility first. YouTube says the channel must be verified, have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the user must be at least 16 to live stream. Check eligibility before configuring an encoder.
- Inspect the source and output. Check resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, SDR/HDR state, audio codec, and audio continuity. Confirm the encoder sends the resolution and frame rate for which you chose a bitrate.
- Choose the workflow and protocol. For ordinary SDR, configure the software or service for RTMPS where supported. For HDR, configure HLS and the HDR requirements above.
- Enter the stream key in the encoder. Use the YouTube stream key associated with the live setup; keep it private. Follow the encoder’s own controls for automatic detection or manual resolution, since their labels and behavior vary by product.
- Check upload capacity. YouTube advises that total outgoing bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. Account for primary and backup stream bitrates where applicable; shared networks can leave less bandwidth for the encoder.
- Preview in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends setting up at least 2 hours before the event and starting encoders at least 15 minutes beforehand. Verify the preview, channel/watch page, audio and video, and local archive before relying on the stream.
- Test representative material. Include movement and audio similar to the planned program. These checks are operational safeguards, not guarantees against failure.
Choosing an encoder or a continuous-playback service
YouTube’s encoder directory covers software, cloud services, and hardware. OBS is listed as free open-source recording and streaming software, and YouTube’s HLS setup page includes OBS among encoders that support HLS output. Gyre is listed as a cloud-based service for continuous prerecorded-video streaming. These directory entries establish category fit, not a particular file’s codec compatibility, current price, or suitability for every channel. Broadcast-grade options such as AWS Elemental MediaLive, CamStreamer, and Telestream products may suit specialized production needs; they are not prerequisites for an ordinary stream.

Troubleshooting common H.265 live-stream problems
- No ingest or encoder connection: Confirm the selected protocol matches the encoder’s output and the YouTube stream setup. Recheck the stream key and whether the encoder supports H.265 with that protocol.
- Unstable stream or dropped frames: Compare total outgoing bitrate—including any backup feed—with real upload capacity. Reduce the output bitrate or resolution if it leaves insufficient bandwidth, and account for shared-network use.
- Unexpected quality or resolution: Check the encoder’s actual outgoing resolution and frame rate, not just the source file’s properties. Revisit automatic detection versus manual resolution for the stream key.
- HDR rejected or appears incorrect: Verify 10-bit HEVC, source-matched BT.2020/PQ-or-HLG metadata, and HLS protocol. Do not mark SDR or mismatched content as HDR.
- Audio missing, unsupported, or out of sync: Inspect the outgoing audio codec, sample rate, channel layout, and continuity. For 5.1, use AAC at 48 kHz; for stereo, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz.
- HLS latency is too high: This is an inherent trade-off of segmented HLS compared with continuous RTMP ingest; ultra-low latency is not available when HLS is selected.
- Live streaming is unavailable for the channel: Check verification, age eligibility, and whether a live-streaming restriction occurred during the previous 90 days.
Copyright and reused-content checks still apply
Using a prerecorded file does not remove YouTube’s live-stream eligibility or content-policy considerations. Before looping a documentary, music, or other material, make sure you have the rights needed for public live streaming and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies. A technically valid H.265 signal does not establish permission to broadcast the content.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an H.265 file be sent to YouTube Live without encoding?
Not necessarily. The live encoder or service must produce a valid continuous feed in the chosen ingest protocol; whether it can pass the source through unchanged depends on that implementation.
Does YouTube accept H.265 for SDR as well as HDR?
Yes. YouTube lists H.265/HEVC for its general RTMP/RTMPS live ingest settings, and its HDR live workflow also uses HEVC with HLS.
